Discussion and Direction on 2026-27 Budget Reconciliation Options
Dissent: Miss Cfield opposed all classroom-level cuts. Miss Rice questioned further fund balance use to avoid cuts. Dr. Rain preferred preserving restart funding over per-pupil allotments.

The committee reviewed staff-proposed options to close a $17.6 million budget gap. Initial consensus was reached on leveraging fund balance ($5M), higher state allotments ($4.7M), charter school budget adjustments ($2M), community schools M&O funding ($1.1M), decreasing substitute budget ($1M), central service cuts ($0.5M), Crossroads lease reduction ($0.1M), and shifting facility staff ($0.3M). The main debate focused on whether to remove a 1% local salary supplement increase (totaling $1.9M but with a $500K veteran teacher option), reduce per-pupil allotments by $322 per student ($0.5M), or reduce the restart centralized budget ($0.5M). Board members expressed strong opinions on protecting classroom funding and supporting veteran teachers. Concerns were raised about the long-term impact of cuts and the use of fund balance, which required a waiver of Board Policy 8101 due to exceeding the 50% utilization threshold.

as far as what leads to the need to find additional local funding to reconcile the board's proposed budget, it's driven primarily by legislative compensation changes, both onetime bonuses as well as salary amounts that were greater than what was included within the board's proposed budget.
our charge is to get to a balanced budget to meet required um required adjustments we'll need to make because of the state budget. We have to identify 17.6 6 million in existing spending that can be repurposed toward um the required spending that we will have.
Um, looking at carryovers that have accumulated over time, community schools would be able to support for one year this $1.1 million for maintenance and operations for their general budget, which means we could free up local dollars for maintenance and operations.
The 500,000 veteran teacher um would give teachers $234 a year before taxes. It would be almost not noticeable and it would be less than noticeable if they had to spend out of their pocket more for stuff that they really need to continue teaching... I bet they would spend that $234 three times over.
The policy is 8101. ... There is already an item on your agenda for your board meeting tonight and on your action agenda for the waiver of that policy because the options presented here that have not yet been agreed to um did include the potential of exceeding that 50% threshold.
I really appreciated your perspective. It helped me when you were talking about if we did the increase for steps 26 and up, but reduced their classroom aotments that they'd probably end up spending it anyway.
