Gistler, who served on Coon Rapids City Council and the regional planning body Met Council, emphasized her technology background and experience with planning and economic development. Cook, a 38-year realtor and former 12-year mayor of Coon Rapids, highlighted his collaborative leadership approach and focus on keeping the county a desirable place to live and work.

Both candidates acknowledged that Anoka County faces significant financial pressures. Federal funding cuts—including $6 million in reductions to human services—are forcing the county to rely more heavily on property taxes for essential services like public safety, transportation, and social programs. While both pledged to keep tax increases low, they agreed that some increases are unavoidable for critical needs. Gistler advocated for efficiency improvements and technology investments to stretch limited dollars, while Cook emphasized managing priorities and working closely with county staff.

The candidates also addressed the county's ongoing conflict with the City of Anoka over a new jail facility. Both agreed the current jail is in poor condition and that a new facility is desperately needed, but disagreements between the city and county have stalled progress. Cook noted that the mayor of Anoka reported no meetings with the county board in two years, calling for renewed dialogue. Gistler pointed to poor planning in earlier years and urged open collaboration to resolve the impasse.

On other issues, the candidates discussed balancing debt reduction with necessary infrastructure investments, ensuring county employees receive competitive compensation, and addressing rising costs in health and human services. Both emphasized the importance of reaching residents through multiple channels—from social media to in-person engagement—and working effectively with state legislators to implement new laws efficiently. Cook highlighted his experience with the North Metro Mayor's Association, which annually advocates for regional needs like Highway 10 expansion, while Gistler stressed the county's role as the "execution arm" of state legislation.
