presentation that I want to share with you camera would we be able to help her help oh you already got her oh look at you you're good you're great how you get I so every year I do a business review for Opa and itself we did it in the um spring this last year this year we did it in the fall so this is what the um beginning of it looked like so um I'm just going to kind of go through this um this is for Centerville School District and I have been with um the school district two years almost three um we have an enrollment of 1214 with an average daily attendance of 1116 we have four buildings our free and reduced percentage is 48% the reduced is 8% directly certified is 43% um cacfp programs we are not eligible for that I'm hoping that will change with our re year which is in 2627 so then um this next slide is just some of our service lines um we have Tammy there at the high school doing breakfast and then we have students down below that have been through this fruit and veggie bar and they are waiting to punch in numbers and then the other picture is some staff at the elementary serving the kids and then this is one that we like to do um we like to have fun with the kids um I have our staff participates with the students on dress up days and sometimes they like to dress alike um we had our um national school lunch program which was in October and the theme was Pirates and then down at the bottom um what I do without the team of people that I have so that was an appreciation of our team and that was just part of our team so then this is kind of our average daily participation the um orange line is gold the blue line is from last year and the green line is this year um they give us a goal Opa looks at all of our numbers and they give us a goal of should be so we are just about 75 to 65 we meing our goal every every week and those numbers change every year whenever they review our goals this is our average daily participation for lunch um the the Orange is our goal the goal line and then um the blue is where we were at last year and the green is this year as with anything that we do there is always room for partic for improvement in everything this is breakfast this is one where we really need to um we we work very hard to try to make our numbers here be a whole lot better we just don't have a bar numbers that we pulled um we have 52% of our population that eats lunch our breakfast is very small 19% um Mark and I have really talked about things that we would like to do um I would love to offer fre breakfast to our students I think that would help with a lot of things how do you pay for it well free breakfast is there's a whole lot of Dynamics there and I don't have the complete answer for that um I don't know how much money we have in our account I don't know what the state would let us do as far as that goes with the free breakfast I know we have to hit a certain percentage of our time reduced in order for it to be reimbursable so I mean it would be reimbursable but you would also be letting the kids who would pay be able to eat free also and there there's still reimbursement money there so I mean we need to look at numbers and see where it all weighs out that sounds really worthwh I think our break even point we need like 8% more for in reduced lunch rate to be able to to break even on eight or 10 or something around I uh Belinda help me up with a person in their in the OPA business office to help me kind of work through the calculations on what it would look like we might have that percentage even hanging out there I know there's a lot of people that are resistant to filling out forms U that even if they didn't choose to use it having a form on file could help support that kind of program for us I mean I think people when they look at free and reduced applications I think they think of um you know a stigma along with it but there's so much more that free and reduce applications go along with like if we were to app for Grants those goes off those percentages too so you know um and there's other programs in the district that also need those free and reduced lunch numbers and then this is our combined food usage per meal so this is everything um students teachers all theart dollars that are transfer transferred over into meals and stuff like that too so um actually this is our combined food usage I'm sorry um combined food usage we are given a goal each week of what we should make you know a dollar amount and um this is something that also lets us know that where we're spending our money if we're spending it like we should if kitchens are making enough food you know not over producing or under producing so um this this is a good chart here this is something that um we want to be below the line is the goal on this one and um we did have a spike we've had a couple of new kitchen managers new people counting couple of mistakes made so I think that's where the spike came in but aside from that um we we are pretty right where we need to be with our goals and when I look at breakfast goals I mean I know breakfast is like 19% and I just when I look at it and I look at our weekly numbers at the end of the week really breakfast we are off buy 40 45 to 50 meals per week for the goals that have been given to us that we need to meet we need to make each weat each week do you think their kids come to school who didn't eat breakfast at home and aren't eating dinner I do I do I do think that and kids qualified for free breakfast probably but are doing just that yes and I had a lot of my kids that were TIY they would not have bre then they'd arrive at school and it would be too late for them to have breakfast that used to happen quite often yes I don't know if it's still like that or um I think that does still happen yeah because then sometimes I've had AIDS come down to the kitchen different things you know do we have a cracker do we have something that you know that they can have so I do think and breakfast is so important to jump start the day with them and get it going research is shown that breakfast is really most important it is for school learning and it seems to me we can work like you guys are toward that it's really important yeah something i' like you to try to make it where they could go down a little bit later than they were able to initially there was something I know he talked to me about it and of course I've got him at a training today so I can ask him to kind of talk to that too maybe one of his reports coming up one of the things that I was really surprised and impressed with was what you're doing in the common or in the high school for sure yes so bringing out the bringing out a cart at the first hour yes you want to explain that gu we we started a second chance breakfast at the high school which is kind of not been happening the last few weeks I've had people who have been sick and gone and and it I I that's a staffing issue on my deal to take care of but um I was taking a cart and going down into the hallway where the corners all meet and I can see kids and I would pick up at least four or five more kids there and in the beginning I was doing it before the bell rang so I caught some kids that did not go you know to the cafeteria for breakfast and then in between the first Bell and the second Bell you know first period and second period I caught even a few more kids there and then um April and I are working together our alternative school kids have started asking if they can get breakfast too so that is going to start this week also so good yeah so there is there is room always for improvement it doesn't matter what you do um I do feel like as far as you know um taking care of our dollars and making sure that we're not over over buying over wasting things like that I feel like each kitchen is good with that um we just need to figure out how to capture just a few more of the kids in with in with their meals especially breakfast it surprises me that we' be lowered this year because of the Clos lunch you just think that would automatically bring in more kids eating to school well and and we've also changed things I mean kids are used to going to a gas station to quick grab and go type stuff um we just brought in a couple of Pop toolers we're trying to you know change up a few things that they are used to seeing so um I mean we definitely are brainstorming trying to figure out how to how to get those kids to want to be there and you know do we have kids who may be frame reduced who don't go through the lunch line and don't bring a lunch and it just don't you all well I do I do see that at the middle school I've bet at the middle SCH that's what I was going to say one of the most appalling things to me from the transfer and grade levels I cannot believe the number of kids it's double digits for sure every day kids who don't eat but when we do have our all of cart and if I have extra pizza left over and I'm selling it for for $150 or whatever some of those kids that don't eat do come up and purchase a bag of chips or even if they're free and reduced even if they're free and reduced and it's crazy CU that's even like on Burger day or pizza day like if you think oh par know yeah that they're not eating yeah yeah and I don't know if we have policies in place I mean the district that came from before we would not let kids unless they were in high school choose not to eat that's where I I've been District like that to yes yes so you can do that we did do that it was a board it was a board policy is what it was but then we get into the G yeah pain anyway but then there was also issues you know I I discussed it with principles before that have said you know they feel like that is shaming kids or making them take food if they have a body image or something you know and we're making them take a tray so there's a lot to think about with that you know so someone's getting a free meal especially a free they're not eating at home they're not taking a free meal to me that's not a business numb thing that's a Humanity issue sure true and we do have a lot I mean I know the kids on Monday morning I mean we didn't have school on Friday and I served breakfast this morning at the middle school and the kids that are you know that need the food whatever they were some of my first kids that were in line today for bre what does the acon CAC that she used child it's it's a child I just because I never child and adult care program yes okay and how would that fit in well that would fit in with like in the afternoon um football players before they go to practice um any kid that stays after school for tutoring or anything like that that would need a snack in the afternoon we would do a snack with them so some of our trainings that we went to some of the schools that you know I sat through 200 of these business reviews one day and listened to other schools and um they there's a snack and then there's a super snack and the super snack is more of a real reimbursement not only that but it's a little bit more food that you're putting in the kids's hands and the reimbursement rate on it is just crazy I mean just crazy crazy being like as a lot of money for your District yes but not only that but it is a lot of food for the kids to eat too cacfp is just something that was not the box was not checked off whenever um what happened with Opa so basically you can't do anything with it until the the bid comes up again that comes up I think in the spring is that yeah 2026 2027 is our re yeah and I guess I'm getting back to this 52% of the kids eat lunch what do they eat what do they eat at school I mean do do kids bring a lunch or some kids do bring a lunch yes we do have a lot of kids that bring a lunch we have some kids that don't just don't eat lunch I've seen some kids share a lunch that's against our policy yeah okay I guess today I was I was at the middle school today in the morning I did lunch com stuff and there were four options for the kids to have um on top of cold M so I mean they even at the middle there was a lot of options and the ones that the ones that did Place orders very excited about those on the menu so yeah and we we have to have um we do a knack meeting with the kids which is just a nutrition advisory committee is what it is so um I will have one with the middle school kids on the 17th I did a survey with the high school kids and then I will do one with the elementary children too it's just kind of get feedback with them talk to them some education on what we do our serving sizes different stuff like that um my new kitchen manager at the middle school did mention to me today that um after that meeting she would like to have meetings with them once a month and just see what they want and you know and and keep that going so we're very open to communication I mean you can't fix a problem if you don't know what it is and you know last year I felt like last year I felt like things work a little rough at our Middle School just because they wanted um seasonings and different things they couldn't understand why we couldn't have salt different things so I had a meeting with a group of kids we talked about seasonings things that we could do and and and we have been putting those out there so um just you know communication is is a lot of it I don't know what the proper term is so I'll do the best describe but how many kids are you doing the whole diet review that somebody has to approve it every day I I don't well I don't but I know like like a nurse or some how many kids are they are affected by that that's probably question um and and if they are affected by that she's helping them with that so um when they come down for lunch I know that we do like say at the middle school I have a couple of kids that are diabetic um and like the french fries aren't on the option that they picked but they've shown it on the menu we have it for them so they just come up and was like hey I ordered french fries with my lunch too I don't have it I'm like oh okay we'll get it we take care of it I thought there's something that for certain kids certain dietary programs you got to go in and make sure that the diet was within certain parameters for and I think that's what the nurse does right and I'm just you don't have any idea how many kids that three at the middle school three okay okay I knew of two so it's not a lot not a large number like it's di it's diabetic for it students who have a milk allergy we have a student who has a peanut allergy so it's those kinds of things so it's a fairly small number but it's still a DA task right and the nurse I know at Lake you last year she had two that she so it's two or three building okay that's what I and I mean we have it on our point of sale system as far as you know can't have strawberries different things like that so we are very aware of those allergies that go on and we have started serving now the elementary is still doing peanut butter but as soon as their supply is gone but we do what's called a wow butter so we are not having any peanut stock at all so any other questions or comments thank you very much you're very welcome thank you next it is there student representative Miss Ary [Applause] went to State and what dance oh dance okay then we had a coner last week and I heard it went great I was in there cuz I got sick we have operation s up is going on this week we have our cookie decorating contest that participate but we're kind of struggling with that cookie eating contest next week LP do you need gu have is for the teachers kid kids night out got cancelled so we're doing Pie to teachers and then this year we basketball cheerleaders which we haven't had before heard and we started last week and that's about it tell me about your uh involvement with operation Sant I'm in the cookie decorating contest and I'm actually making all the cookies for the students it's about like I'm going to make like 40 cookies and I'm everything unfortunately that happens once you're on a committee and they'll do St what as you get old doesn't change worse any other questions so then how does that tie to the operation Santa do you like is there yeah how do that people pay like2 for a cie okay gotcha so people are buying it okay okay that's it all right are you involved in the mock trial are you too busy baking cookies if she needs to test them she can bring her to practice that's how do he PA for them yes well done well done she's a business woman well we'll curious how the mck trial goes cuz I know that's a new event and hopefully we get a good participation you have a lot of fun doing actually a lot of kids go you like to argue sometimes who's the supervisor of that Mark Taylor we had 16 come to our interest meeting oh exciting we have nine going to a conference in uh Mount Vernon on Saturday taking off at 6:00 in the morning okay so yeah any other any other questions thank you Miss Harvey thank you thank you next one is a presentation and acceptance of the FY 23 uh first question can you he can you hear me yes we just [Music] apparently Zoom decided to I don't want to share a screen with you there it goes this is the financial statements for the year ended June 30 2023 first few pages are just general information on the district and the actual table of contents for the audit report as far far as the opinion letter the paragraph you care about is the second one which states that we agree with financials as they are presented that is the audit opinion that you want it is about a three-page letter however management discussion and Analysis in the audit report shows the financials in more of a descriptive in terms of words instead of just a page of numbers The Helpful one here is it actually does a comparison year to year you can see the main issue here is you know current assets are which would be cash and receivables are staying roughly comparable year toe which is what you would want to see districts usually are not building up Lar L amounts of cash unless there is a reason for it on page 18 we get into the actual financials the first two pages are shown as if the as if the school was a business in terms of it brings in things like long-term debt pension liabilities Capital assets you would only see this type of information probably when you look at each individual audit report Exhibit C is basically the fund financials this is the information that you'd be getting out of your financials uh software unlimited the district's accounting system so You' be able to get this information monthly or however often you would want it the funds do get broken down here general fund which is the main operating fund of the district capital projects and then just the non- major funds get shown combined that is how the actual Accounting Standards require them to be presented to try to avoid in some entities you'd have you know seven or eight very small funds and they want to try and condense this as much as possible exhibit e is an income statement for the governmental funds general fund as you can see went up a little bit from compared to the prior year that one is not that would just be you know depending upon what you are actually doing it's important to note that your the source of your income is broken down up above as you can see State money provides the vast majority of the funds for a school district in general fund in your case Capital assets the capital projects funds you are doing various construction activities around the district so you are actually issuing bonds that will change year to year depending upon what you are actually doing exhibit ghni these would be your business type funds your school nutrition the three-year-old preschool and then the internal service fund which is doing some of your services to some of the employees the important thing to remember is this is a bit different than probably a lot of the reports you see since these dob items that flow through the financials which you would not see on a monthly basis let's see this one is probably more helpful for you since you were discuss talking about your nutrition fund earlier this is purely cash in cash out so you can see that the cash in your nutrition fund did go up on a year on a yearly basis which is what you would want to see I know depending upon the district some districts have situations where the nutrition fund has no money in it exhibits J and K these are the private purpose trust scholarship it does get presented but it gets shown separately since that money is not available to you for the activities of the district notes to the financial statements these provide a lot more of the detail behind the scenes they provide definitions they show Bond rep payment schedules depending upon what you are interested in they can provide additional information you guys are getting quite a few revenue bonds there it's a little bit unusual it has to go over that many pages but that's just to also prevent them so you can actually read them budgetary information is shown as as well this one is just comparing how your budget how you actually performed versus what the budgeted amounts were It's Not Unusual to have adjustments there these tables here as well on the Iowa public employer employees retirement system and the district's op have liability they show information that can stretch up to 10 years back it is useful to see is just a comparison on a yearly basis as you can this one made a bit of a change here iers as a pension plan you get to show your proportionate share of it as you can see you are 0.12% so a very small portion of it but the overall liability of the district this year was 4.8 million compared to 163,000 last year you have no control over that number it is you just get to show iper your share of iers see this is just some description on it OPB this is trying to reflect people when they go into retirement retirement for what kind of a cost there is associated with them to the district so this is you're trying to project it you know 20 30 years down the road so this number is not it's the best actuary's best approximation it is not a solid definitive number supplementary information this provides combining schedules for smaller funds both a balance sheet and a income statement the capital projects always shows a combining schedule here to keep the Statewide sales tax separate from your property tax that you're levying for similar things the districts also get to show a combining schedule for your activity fund it can get a bit messy there same with for your District since you have that support trust next schedule here is just showing governmental funds for the past 10 years it is not an exact comparison since the state will constantly reclassify how they want you to show various expenses so it is an approximation but some things can change year to year just based on how the state wants to change things next schedule is the schedule of expenditure of federal Awards since Centerville gets over 700 50,000 in federal money you have to get a single audit which then should has some extra reporting requirements behind the scenes and also results in this wonderful schedule being shown most of your money fortunately comes through the Iowa Department of Education or through one of the aeas in your area so it is somewhat more helpful for you than some of the some entities that have to get money from multiple sources and get multiple reporting requirements ments there are two more letters in the back which just cover our report on some of the internal controls of the district we can go through those in more detail if you want but otherwise the final pages are on the findings from the audit segregation of Duties is an issue at any school district that is always one area to be concerned with this does not mean that we saw anything wrong it is just an area to be aware of then part three is just findings specific to the federal programs and part four are other issues that we noted um we note a few instances of late fees and sales tax being charged to the district that is not uncommon for districts business transactions certain employees board members of the district when you do business with the district these do get disclosed none of these appear to represent a conflict of interest but the state requires us to disclose them anyway as far as other findings here certified enrollment that is a common comment that we see it essentially if I would have to guess well over 50% of the districts that we look at get some variation of an enrollment comment this has to do with the wonderful new system for how things are reported to the state the state does have us show the fund 33 the I don't know what how it's described usually Statewide sales service and use tax they have this schedule shown in the back that just breaks it out slightly differently since it gets reported to the states so they can see what the districts are doing with that funding as far as other comments here board policies the io Administrative Code requires them to be reviewed on at least every five years we noted a few of them that had not been reviewed it appears that you're working with the iasb to update those policies and then in your nutrition fund we did note a few deficit student lunch account balances some of them were getting to be significant that should just be reviewed to try to avoid it becoming more of an issue are there any questions for me at this time just note the board polic is one this was checked prior to myish training policies so on our next audit we should end up on that excited yeah I really excited any other questions if not we need a motion to accept the AUD I make that motion to you safety update presentation awesome all right Cameron how do I do this are you in the zoom y i just to share my screen yep okay awesome all right so um Mr Thomas and I were just talking we wanted to share a couple of things that we've done since our um uh vulnerability assessment which was done by tetratech um my first year uh we had them come in as part of the governor safety grant that was the grant that we got uh $50,000 to upgrade safety uh and Security in each building so 50,000 per building um the first step you had to do was this vulnerability assessment with this this group so they came in and and conducted the assessment so each of the things that we've updated since are things that they've made a note of you're you could do more in this area or more in that area so uh I'll kind of go through some items here and be able to answer questions along the way um I'm a teacher I have to give my purpose on it but you don't want to hear that um couple yearly items that I felt like I should probably just talk about so that we know each year the admin team reviews the districtwide plan actually we did a really deep plan just recently we our admin meeting uh unfortunately uh I should say unfortunately kept us out of buildings for 5 hours but uh we spent the Lion Share going Page by page on this plan because we felt that there were some items that we uh and we have we'll need to now talk to our Emergency Management Mike lamb and with uh Vern Milburn and with Tom demy just to make sure that the things we think would be better Solutions in the temple areas work um of some of those items because of the change and how the high school is uh now since it's not on the one street it's on the next street so smaller changes but just things that we think can update us a little bit to our current times um but spent quite a bit of time working through that uh there's been some question about the emergency drills so each year we do four fire drills four storm drills and at least one emergency drill um so a lock down or an ALICE drill we have a lockdown drill scheduled for next week um and then a at least a get out drill uh for the spring so one where you can choose whether you lock down or get out we have the nice addition for those drills this year and and we're really excited about uh because we have cameras in every building which I'm steing my thunder later with this but because we have the cameras we're actually able to follow the intruder through the building so people can have more information about where the Intruder is so they can make better decisions for what they need to do from their location so we'll get a lot of practice with that this year through this um the principles review the safety plan with new staff at the start of each year and we we really hit on uh doing more of that this year and we'll continue to do that too there's also some trainings that everybody has to do um chemical right to know so that's MSDS sheets so some some of the chemicals that might be es especially in the m maintenance area um bloodborne pathogens which is an important safety item and mandatory repor which I'd argue is probably our most pre safety concern for students in our district um making sure that we know if if there are instances of abuse of any type um we know what to do and how to help a kid so a few districtwide items that we've got one uh this came almost immediately after the vulnerability assessment one of the items that they recommended is that we had a tool that could allow us to directly communicate with dispatch in the case of an emergency um luckily with the safety Bureau getting started on the state level they were doing a sign up where you could get these radios in each of your buildings for free uh a company from hel came down and installed this for us and it's in the office area of each building um so this is a button that they press that button and then it contact dispatch um so that uh dispatch can can be on right away and we can get people on site as quickly as possible uh this summer uh we had another practice through Chief Dey tested the tested the buttons with everybody and and try to check to see how long you have to hold that button down for because sometimes it gets a little fincky so you have to hold it down for a while uh we'll test this again during our emergency drills um this next week and and in the spring so just a nice quick one button response there um as you know because you guys approved this through our safety Grant spending uh another big item that we spent money on with the safety Grant was reing uh the locks across the district we actually kind of put some of our construction money to this because that is what took care of the high school but uh we felt um that there was too much in the past Loosey Goosey with keys out there uh so we wanted to be tighter with that Aon actually has been really awesome about tighten that process down I'm pretty sure I even felt like I needed to give my kidney when I signed the form that said how we'll take care of the keys and I think that's that's exactly what we want we're we're tight with those and we know who has access to everything and we're aware of that so um kind of a fresh restart with everybody and just a real tight approach to it which is going to help us um the other thing we did with locks was adding some keyless entry system to some different places more places than we had before um with what's nice about the keyless entry is we can actually track what users badge got into a location um so that helps us especially when we now have the camera access to see that entrance and make sure that people aren't lending keys to anybody or anything because that would be a big you're out of here kind of deal um so we did uh just to improve speed and response time uh Aon I keep saying we really Aon did all the work on this but and his and his folks but uh we did change out some hand particularly in our K new K1 hallway so that there were more push button locks instead of locks that on both side you have to use the key to lock them um we wanted to speed up especially if you're if you would be in a dangerous situation and you had a whole bunch of Littles to to keep calm you need to have as quick response as possible now with doors our current policy and and one that we've worked on is locked and open which that'll actually apply to the last District white item that I share but uh that should make that quicker but you just you never know so having that push button makes it nice and easy for those think I missed anything with the door locks there no it's good so this was the the line share of the money uh for the safety Grant I think it's probably the most valuable tool that we have in ensuring the safety particularly of our building envelope which was an area that they recommended that we do the most work so building envelope being like how you get into the building area directly around the building so we put $175,300 uh into uh putting camera systems uh into our um into our buildings there were some outdated camera systems in a couple buildings that weren't the best um these are high definition uh they connect to a central server so that we're able to like here I can monitor a building if we'd have an issue but the best part about this system I think is that it's it uses an IP protocol is that the right way to say that okay that would allow our police or fire or any sort of emergency responder to actually log into our system like if if they were reporting to a building to try to take care of something and they can see even on their phone the cameras in certain areas or on a laptop the cameras in a certain area um which is really helpful it connects to our keyless entry system as well um so that allows them some access when they need access uh safety wise there that's all live yeah it's all live yep like right now even I could pull up on my phone any one of our buildings um which I is really useful because like if we would get a call as we have at other times like somebody is here and they're they're angry and they're responding in a in a violent way um then we I can as I'm driving I can have it pulled up which I did a lot of Zoom meetings as I drove during Co so I got really pull me over um but I wouldn't you could pull it up though and you can watch and you can access and you can provide that information I think that would be really effective for law enforcement you know you're going into that situation and you want to know what you're going into that was a big push from us yeah yeah and that was a big thing that I think helped mitigate a lot of the a lot of the potential further damage at Perry wasn't it the IP cameras yep so the the bottom picture there it's really hard to tell with that red frame around it that's actually the red wall so each building secretary has a a large screen the this size in their office and there's a camera view that kind of hits their their hot spots in their building that they can act they've got on all the time for them to watch um the hot spots often will include entryways but like if somebody beeps a button to come in that'll automatically pop up for them until they clear it but it also includes we know that you know the hallway over here is a place where kids aren't always doing the right thing or they dilly dally there we could keep an eyee on it and make sure it's safe so um that's something that uh I had in a previous District that was really valuable for us and I think it seems like our secretaries and principles have liked that so far that was one thing I really liked about the design of the new building is the lockers they're low you can see I should have put that in here probably that's a good point and we were C I don't know who remembers but during the early part of when those lockers got put in we kind of looked at it and we thought gosh that looks really uncomfortable and and not very convenient but you're right you can see that whole hallway now um with that this is um this is important um in in a number of locations throughout our buildings often close to a gym uh we have aeds stop the bleed which those are spread out a little bit more the stop the bleed are and Naran spray kits um a lot of the work to to be able to afford to have these in our buildings uh has been done with the help of County Public Health they've either gotten grants to put some of these items up or helped us find a deal a lot of times um so they've been a real big help on this our nurses check the batteries and the aeds uh because those wear out over time so it's something you got to you got to have on hand because you just never know well if you even think um just even highly athletic high school kids in in the US have had had issues where they needed an a to pull them out of it so um these are a really important piece of safety Tech that we've got in our buildings and we've worked to increase the number of that I think you know that some of the more likely scenarios there's something there for uh the Man Trap um I think it probably has other names but I was called The Man Trap each of our buildings now has a secure entry like this uh where you have to come in through one building or one one set of doors there's an area here and then there's another set of doors to let you in we're working on a couple malfunctioning doors in one spot so it might be a little harder than it's supposed to be sometimes um or or the opposite even but um what this does is so you can see on this picture this is the lake you man trap right so you come in that you get buzzed in you'll be able to get in by these red rugs but before you can go to the office or before you can go into the building to the right they've got to buzz you again because what happens is sometimes you can watch that camera and okay you seem all right on this camera this is one more step to say okay now I can see your whole body and legitimately you are okay to to come into the office and sign in to do this um these are all set up so that really the the access to the building is through the office too so you typically won't man trap somebody from outside to the middle to the building you you'll man you'll pull them into the office first um so they can get signed in uh this is kind of a new item right we just approved um some SRO services on site um and I think we're looking to increase in the fall hopefully um definitely something that can help improve our response time and really I think another thing is it also gives our kids some relationship with police officers which is a good thing um that can help they've been really impactful around our building building we see them parked and they come in and just say hello a lot this year when did you say Jenny do you see that lot school yeah this is a new one that Aon and I have been working on um and he found a vendor that could do this for us uh so what this and it won't look like this this is not the brand we're getting um but there will be a a panic button in each principal's office that allows them to remember how I said that doors would be locked and open so in a lot of places not every place but a lot of places we have magnetic uh holders for those doors like for fire doors and just like if the fire alarm goes off that magnet turns off and the door closes in this case if you push the button in the principal's office the lock will or the magnet will turn off it'll close the door and then it'll do an announcement that says we're in a lock down remain secure and I wait further information so this another quick one button approach to try to let people uh know what's going on we're we're kind of working through the actual language with the company on what it'll announce but um should be installed over Christmas break yeah so what's the who's authorized to hit that button because the principal may be somewhere else in the building so actually thank you for for asking that because that is part of what we did on whenever that meeting was the other day um we have primary secondary and tertiary uh leads in our plan uh based on who the principles have identified in their building as being respons ible for that sort of thing and access to the office so should the principal become incapacitated there's a secondary person who's aware that they would be next in command at that point um and a tertiary person should that person go down more physically just not the office right well and in each case we didn't make the secretary one of those people so that they can also be an extension of the princi for that point so they they're available to to be there should yeah yeah consistent yeah then we've got ERS news there but then incident command and that place would go to that secondary person if it would be until uh police would be on site then they'll be in charge so this will be exciting to have added one of the items on our agenda today and there's um this so I looked at the we checked out our invoices the ones that we're proposing today are the start we have some additional uh items that we want to get to finish the work on this but these are those films that that go on windows they're perforated so that you can see out but you can't see in to the building and that's I mean you're just looking to reduce the sight line for somebody who might be looking to PL something nefarious um and so we've got uh in in your packet today uh we've got some for CHS and some for Lake View we also have bids for how and the preschool but we still have safety guard that we can do on that to collect a third bid in order to move forward with theirs so we can use the rest of that safety grant money there uh we spent it all in high school and late um so we'll approve for PPP through here if we approve that but this will be a big one we're looking to add um today you'll have the office areas of the high school um the front entrance the auditorium entrance those doors or those windows along that Auditorium that curved wall there cuz really if if somebody were standing out there wanting to do something we want that to not be a place where you can see where somebody is I want to say there was one other spot but uh it's going to cover those bigger Windows um at Lake View the big one that we got was for the cafeteria because that's a place where you have you know like hundreds of kids sitting there um and we wanted to have that covered we're also going to do some for the entrance the principal's office and I believe there was one other area there oh the back that in the hall Pride that back entrance there is one that we're getting a bit for coming down to measure some new spots for us tomorrow and then how um the New Media Center uh would be a big place for that some of the windows up on the front and uh the front entrance what would be their when would they install if we approve it I think that's the trick just whenever we can get them here we're going to try to have them install them all at the same time just so they can come in because there was some talk that maybe they would not charge us the cuz they in the invoice you've got like a transportation fee to bring the lift down and everything so we thought if they could do it once we could probably get them to just charge us that Fe one time it sounded like so we want to try to get them all done at the same time and it also really looks nice it does yeah yeah um so yeah that's that's that item and I think that'll be a good addition for us uh we do have a few building specific items and the principales added some things in here and I kind of pulled one highlight out of each of them uh so at the preschool our biggest highlight is the new fence around the playground that was probably an area where we were most vulnerable to someone before um but now that fence encloses the entire playground which makes it uh easier for the staff that are outside not only to monitor where the kids are going but who can be around um if you think about like custody situations and things like that that helps us to block that off and that's a big thanks to the preschool PTO and the app County Community Fund for helping us to be able to afford that uh this year they also have their new man trap they have a new addressable fire panel um st stop the bleed training for staff um and that's located centrally in the building all the preschool staff are CPR certified uh that we installed an additional keypad at the back door for uh safer coming in from recess and the parking is at the front of the building for safer safer drop off and pick up like View and actually we have a third addition to this part here but student escalation we've worked through some uh some student behaviors some mental health concerns at Lake View this year um really working on trying to help some kids to get better while keeping everybody safe Mr Baker early in the year um had moved some things around to add a sensory room and a behavior deescalation room they're all they're both near the office uh to help students who are struggling and need to deescalate when they're disregulated um this weekend uh we sent an email to St staff I've talked I think to maybe a couple people uh we believe that we also have need for an additional special education classroom at Lake VI Behavior classroom so we uh actually really fun day on Friday uh we went we banged on walls and screamed to see where would be the best uh sound dampening location uh you don't get to bang on walls and scream as a superintendent very often so it was really kind of fun it was cathartic yeah it was great yeah so uh we were're working on finding the right person for that but that'll be a big thing for our for our kids I think I thought you posted that right yeah it's posted on Iowa works and uh as soon as we get our teach Iowa account to behave it's going to go up there too so um they again also got some upgraded fire panel and devices a fence barrier along the road by the playground there's that gravel road back behind the building there's a fence barrier there um conducted a walk through this summer with the police department to learn a high needs of concern since we have a new administrator in the building stop the V kits uh updated the fire and tornado safety signs in every room and added cones for pickup time actually the pickup uh I these cones are pretty nice I wasn't sure what I think of them at first to be honest with you but it actually stops it doesn't allow people to drive up in the in the front there uh by where kids are being picked up and I think it's a really good safety addition and people have done a pretty good job of of adhering to that for the most part I'd say so this was a good addition how the big safety thing that we did is more environmental uh in that we evaded all that asbest and I think we all got to see that on our building tour an hour this is probably not the best picture I I pulled it from my phone from when we were working but as we added those new cabinets we uh put in non asbest uh tile which is a safer deal for our kids Terry also worked on uh purchasing additional GO bags for the building uh so that there's additional like first aid material throughout the building uh there are clear file folders um for emergency folders on the way or or in already in some place already hanging on the walls emergency folders there we go um so and that's a big one cuz actually Terry made this point as we were working through our plan everything that we can do to help support our subs and and being ready to support uh the safety of the kids if something happen so that's a big part for that um they reviewed the safety protocols for tornado and Intruder CHS I think the biggest safety addition obviously is the new main building we have less entrances into the building than we did before and more um monitoring of those entrances uh at the very least so just making sure that our entry to the building is secure is such a big deal there oh and the supervision is is another big part of that there's there's a lot of additional supervision uh with some of those spaces that they've really put in place there some corners and nooks and crannies that I think get people during uh passing time so they've made a real effort to watch those nooks and crannies um again AED CPR training offered to staff during an upcoming P PD uh Narcan training and AED training have already been offered uh safety presentations for students on vaping this was fantastic the the junior high and the high school had this uh steered straight and we really heard positive remarks from our students about that um we're doing the Window Films the again two fire two fire fire drills have already happened one tornado drill has already happened this semester um one to go um on the tornado uh our new entry upgrade to practices unlocked exterior doors uh there was a little push back early on I think about the the science wing door being locked during during the time uh beginning part of the day because people were like well I go to college classes and then I come back to campus I want to be able to come in through the closest door but Jenny's really held the line on that and I think people have found a path so that they're safely monitored coming in um so that's been good uh the camera system upgrade is definitely by far one of the best things that we've got and uh increased super increased supervision between Class PR couple things that I didn't mention in this presentation and I'm make sure I tell you right now we have access to a nurse in each building so that's that's a big item in the case of an emergency uh We've spread additional first aid kits and go bags throughout the buildings um later this winter uh we have scheduled to bring in and I can't tell you the exact number now they told me I think it's like 11 or 12 isn't it that they go with canines 8 to 8 to 12 8 to 12 so a number of canines from surrounding uh police departments um to do a k9 walk through at the high school uh in the middle school this is something they've been doing with uh people in a county a number of County area uh it's good training for the Kines it's good for the school um so that'll be a nice uh a nice item for us yet this winter and building a relationship with our K9 officers for the district too um we've talked a little bit about some additional trainings too actually I even talked to Mike today about some ideas for that um how to use the fire extinguisher in case that comes up uh what to do like let's talk about there's a training that you can do from the Weather Service was it for U weather spottings that you can if you have staff that are out maybe buy mon during a recess and something comes up so different trainings that we can look to bring in for our staff obviously we'll look to do another um Al well it's not called Alice anymore uh uh Alice training for people to catch people up to what's going on it's the same work still just I think that's trademarked right so is there anything that I can answer or did I hit things that you're curious about or is there anything I'm missing I was just going to ask are the GO bags is that s similar to what we took out to recess the whole path with the no I'll tell you what um we were just a little bit behind it that in how it kind of went back to the training that Mike provided years ago on the Alice training and you probably remember this um we put them like so it was before the K1 came to Lake View so it's it's a I would say a large bag it's probably like a deel siiz bag and the idea is is that every teacher has like their little bags of Band-Aids and gloves and stuff like that but it's in the event of a mass incident and after the police would have regained the building jump in if I'm saying something wrong Mike then it would be like the police would be like it's all clear police are here but it would be a place like where everybody in the third grade Wing could go to and you could get supplies out of that bag to tend to your students or injuries prior to the fact that we only know one or two ambulances could disperse kids at a time so we kind of had that at Lake View already but we didn't really ever have that um uh kind of established at power so we actually bugged Mike and he kind of helped us make sure we had placements with where students were yeah all right I think that's strong districtwide that I think everybody yeah yeah I wouldn't want to carry that to I know and that's what honestly we kind of talked about that like you had to talk about like you can't you know you want it where you could get it but we're like you got to think like you know some of us are 50 some years old trying to get that down let's put it down here where we just got to pull it out instead of dropping on our heads and injur someone trying to get it off the shelf all right Megan din has done a lot of good work course on that you help get us go on that I think a lot of our next steps other than that button are going to be in the realm of additional training for people um there are other physical improvements we could do but unfortunately we're going to have to build up some capital for a little while before we can add anything more we've got got a lot of really good items in place and we've really hardened our buildings um I would say additional lighting and a few locations on the outside of the building would be one thing that we've talked a little bit about um that would improve kind of Night Safety um but there are definitely some other items that we'll look to add as we come here and to add into our long range plan but we kind of Hit the the big ones that we got from our vulnerability assessment with these items and uh while there's not a requirement to do additional vulnerability assessments we always do like to do I've done some walkthroughs with officer demy and officer more to continue to add what are some things that we need to be looking for and and what and adding or watching out for with staff and uh I think we'll look to continue to do a lot of that uh as we go forward um when we do our um safety drills our evacuation or Alice or whichever ones we do we'll always do afterwards so there's usually a couple officers that come we'll do like an after after action review there like we'll all come together and talk about what went well what was too slow what didn't give enough information and um I'm eager to see this one because of the fact that we'll have those cameras now so we're able to give better information I think this will be a really important after action this year any questions I have one Mr Mo what do you think of the presentation or well you were to in the room no I I I think that's just the that's the stuff what Mark pretend that you can see physically um I guess over the years just what the staff is they don't you know throughout the years what the staff has learned and what they're they got the hopefully we train them most of them for the um almost like the cop eyesight I think a lot of them see now hey I'm watching this while I'm doing this and I think that's gone the long ways but um as a you know we as a district we put a lot of money into hardening our buildings and um you know luckily everybody's gotten on board with the safety aspect and you know we may not get it and approve it as a board but we approve budget and they're using that budgeted money for safety items so um so we may not always see it as a board or if you do it might be in the bill a lot of these I kind look through try to figure out when all you guys would have been a part of it and a lot of times it was this is in the bills I mean think about it we made tremendous strides over the years um going to be perfect but we're going to do the best we can all right thank you any other questions if not uh we are ready for approval of the snow removal bit we only have one yeah I took it out of the packet at the last second because the date was submitted wrong so we want to make sure to give you the one with it correctly but it's the same as that's the trick um what we will do after this is start to have some conversations with some people about you know who can do what I think there's some work that we can do to dby out some gear up money for it's actually not a safety item that's just uh making our building look nice this is the bulkhead logo that we cut out uh when we value engineered um Item B is being paid for by student council um this is another decal to kind of make our cafeteria look a little nicer it's item C that starts our safety items on here so item C is that perforated window vinyl for the front entrance to the building um item D is covering the main office Windows uh on that first floor there the ones that are just right by that entryway um e is the entrance to the auditorium doors and then F I'm sorry no e is the entrance and those side windows um Windows left of entrance uh by theor those big tall windows in that corner there um and then the lake view one so these these two are the Leer uh bins um that that came out as the best bid for us I'm going to find the L we want on here so you can know what's in this we need to we w't want to add some additional items to l view after they get some measurements um let me see sorry I'm scrolling it's I enlarged it because I have bad eyesight now so Elementary window Graphics so this is quote 18802 uh you've got the uh perfor gra these uh window Graphics are for that cafeteria area there and the entry into the cafeteria we'll be adding the office area and the um the the main entry and the back entry to that tomorrow measure some will from two quotes MH do both quotes cover the exact same specs they don't so we started with quotes that covered the same specs and then when we found out the price was going to be better with the one we move forward with getting the specs that we wanted with that company um which is yeah yeah cuz it was some it was significantly less like $9,000 order magnitude was like 50% more yeah yeah yeah now that's a sub for the other company so it's not them doing it themselves it's something they sub it out to um oh okay yeah so we um when we found that it was going to be significantly more cost effective with that company we worked with them to get the ones we wanted really only those ones should have been included I I misspoke to Mr Johnston who organized this for us and got these quotes for us because I told him for the safety grant money we have to have three quotes So he thought he needed to put that in into the packet for all of you because he thought he needed to approve that at the board table too that's just for the for the feds oh got to do that he wanted to broken up into three different okay right yeah so we'll have to use our original quotes on the okay for the Fed on that be able to use that grant money so then taking out those A and B items we're looking roughly 134,000 approving for the window coverings for the CHS yep and out of P that would be our plan on that um and there there there's more that we'll still need to do but this gets us to start on some of the biggest scariest locations that that need to be covered to to get that up and running so in in the I know if you know those are doing those in the Comon area those upper windows that on the North side there's something going up there I don't think we measured anything for there CU you can't really get a line of side end through there least more I think how's it working with just the sun coming in there different times of the day it's okay okay it's not because I know I walk through that so many times and so many different times of the day there were sometimes just like that's annoying I think they're sheltered enough from the outside they're inside just enough I think it's okay I mean I haven't noticed anybody having an issue okay with sun and there yeah during construction there was a big question how much was coming through so as we kind of mapped out what ones we're were going to put film on we were mostly working off of where do we need to block eyesight at this point we had some debate about um the front office at the high school because we have the blinds that you can see out but not in but as we kind of looked at it more I I really think it's wise to just get it done um and it's going to cost a little bit more to just get it done but if you would happen to have your blinds open and those spots you know this is a cover um not that you want to say that there's a place that a a person who wants to do wrong would know to go there but gosh I mean when the person who's in charge is there you want them as protected from that as possible so they can be in charge and make sure everybody's safe and it'll look like you said I think it'll look a lot nicer to have all that graphic out there and yeah real smooth looking on a nice new building then we got to figure out a big gy yeah the gym wall seems kind of PL sh paint something she's and Sarah we're Johnson I thought the poverty uh talk was so exceptional it was just when when she took 150 people out in the hall and had us find out the situ ways these are school board members people that probably are educated and how the difference between them was compared the ones that didn't move much the ones that moved so much the people in front had to feel so guilty where they were compared to you know their parents had college education and they belonged to country clubs and all this and two parent families and some of them that didn't have hardly any of that and so I think that really shows what what I thought about when I saw that you couldn't do that in your school because you would have some kids that would just be going backwards all the time and some would be up we had that there you did it at school no that at that walk yeah yeah we did a bit of that Mark and I hung out we did yeah us that one lady but you proved you can overcome yep yep yeah well you can and and I it did prove that and and that's what we hope that school system that they can overcome because everybody starts at such a total different place and I know we talked about this before the kids that oh you wish their parents would breed to them and things like that it ain't going to happen it's just the way it is so you take where they are you know that but it was that was that was good and she and then I was going to buy the book cuz I a little slow books were all gone so I I got Christmas so as soon as I'm done with that you're welcome I give Christmas I have a too what I have a copy as well yeah I want I needed something simple for good yeah that was good I'm sure people didn't say the same thing yep Mr whis what would you say the AI thing was interesting for that one I kind of had to stand the back cuz for a lot of reasons but I will tell you at the beginning of the year McKenzie Lane had was I was walking through the building first week and he was showing how he can bring up different math questions using chat G GPT and then how we could we kind of make some modifications would bring up a question I thought and it was just like that's a pretty at the same time it's when you start getting into English and writing papers now now do you get into Jeep mode basically and so I think there's some pluses and minus of using check GPT so going to that one and I will tell you when she did show the robot moving thing we deal to begin with I was kind of freaked out that we're living in Tomorrowland um but at the end of the day I think it's something we need to figure how to embrace so since then I have actually downloaded chat GPT on my phone and I've been just seeing what it will do in different things and what I'm finding with it is you always kind of wonder how accurate the information is but is if you actually have a conversation with it it will remember things and it will kind of bring some things back up and and um and I've done this on on different you know researching different topics and what I'm finding you get is more detail specific information than if you're didn't do Google search it's like it really nails down on it so as as you think about What's happen the last 100 years and Technology changes this is the next major thing to to impact human as artificial intelligence so I think we probably need to pay attention to it and set our our our kids up for Success on how to use it responsibly M um I'm going to Echo what Tom said about the poverty seminar it was lifechanging and if a person did not walk out of there looking at things through a different lens then I I don't help them but it was really and you know we talked some about bringing that um training maybe to our district or our community as a whole um would be really beneficial and also I I attended a uh board finance class and let's just say I'm really glad we have Lisa because that is not my jam so thank you Lisa uh Mr Moore um I'd say where the best one that I was at was the uh par incident be brief um horrible situation um they did a fabulous job with the with the situation they had in front of them um I read every act action report I can of Across the Nation of those types of incidents and um har had a very good after action report and it kind of it hit home um as someone who trains um that we're doing a lot of the correct stuff that hopefully nothing like that ever happens here but um confidence in our in our buildings I also like to add that the [Music] vendor Two Mules for Sister Sarah King Carol was backing around uh I would like to know what Lisa thought um I thought it was a good time to have the full board together not discussing I also like the exercise seeing where people Ed up and ended up not where I thought I but I think you had people in all some a little bit farther some Mr D what would you say you know one of my favorite things of this convention is the same as a lot of conventions I think there's a lot of learning outside of the clinics to just talking that people who are doing the work in other places and finding out what's working for them and made some really good connections with some people from around the state that I don't get to see very often and picked up on some good ideas from them that I was eager to get to bring back um definitely excited that obviously good clinics the poverty thing was amazing um but that was a big big addition into that MH uh again I was blown away by the poverty thing that would be something not just for our community could defin okay uh the other one was the AI when the lady said 20% is the false poty 20% of the time it gives you false negative that mean 40% of the time this software that they're screening kids work doesn't really work and I have happen to be sitting next to a lady and I don't really know what her business was but she said the productivity in their business was up 30 to 40% when they started to use it and we cannot ignore that technology we have to teach that right way uh that was pretty much I thought it was all good observations I just want to mention the AI too I just want to mention Tim was sitting right next to me in that and he had never he pulled up the chat thing too and he was doing something from his work and pulled something up and got it that quick and he didn't know anything about it I'm a little slower Ted I think but I I didn't get the free one so but anyway I was watching show on TV made me a Ned on on public TV I guess and they had the same type of thing with it had a different name specific program but they had the teachers showing how she took care of the cheating type thing and she really they had a person just doing stuff with her and she could actually they they can the teachers that know this I I'm certainly hopefully we can't lay and people like him that are going to be good at I think the teachers you know that's they've got to know this stuff it's so important and that just goes back to I said what was technology like 100 years ago you know where and and what's it going to be 100 years from now and I think this is this is really it I mean most of us grew up without computers you know a lot of people in this room okay maybe not a lot of people in this room may get hand this one okay this is us three got way through college without a computer right you know um and so so that's something relatively new in the last 100 years and now you can't teach school without a computer so what's it going to be 100 years from now and and I just think that this is something we need to figure out how to and and it goes back to look what happened when social media first came on oh it's great you can communicate you can you know check you know check up on Old Friends you can take a picture of your lunch and that's kind of what it was used for now it's turned into an absolute cessful human interaction um the the faceless people that just put hateful comments out there just because they want to argue with somebody they've never met and and it's it's turned into a bad thing so I I think AI is going to is it's the next generational change in humanity and and we we owe it to ourselves and our kids to try and figure out how to um do more responsible use of it than what social media is done to society well said well said anything else approved Personnel business oh was there something about the jerseys they had to get new jerseys for yeah and cleaning out the basement of the uh Lake VI gym the jerseys for the varsity basketball had been had been marked incorrectly and by staff so we had to replace those unfortunately they weren't in need of replacement yet they were new jerseys last year so that was a a costly error in that case yeah that's that was my concern I think what 8,000 cly it was on there there was a discussion I understand yeah I think we've got a plan for avoiding that moving forward there's a lot of discussion in the public that yeah I heard I got some rightly yeah fair enough I think we got a good plan moving forward and some important learning out of that any other discussion he none all those in favor signify by saying I I those same sign Financial reports are accepted principal and director reports I did ask because we had so many out with the principales and directors to get written reports um so that then you could ask questions out of their reports if you wanted to instead of uh giving verbal reports unless you want anything from any of the specific folks out there there's one thing on uh the lake de report of and I've been in Ry for a long time and we get the students of the month and sometimes the same student gets student of the month four times I just never really like that too much you know what we have a spreadsheet there should be no reason for that I know and I feel like I'm the old person here in that realm right now I say that a lot to Mark and meetings and Julie but honestly we have a spreadsheet that from the time they come to Lake View to how to the high school that like right now at how when a student's nominated I look through there and I'm like hey that kid's already gotten it once or twice or whatever so that should not be happening because you're right there's a lot of kids in our district and we got to be spreading the well I I and they had he had a suggestion in there that they couldn't do that and I like that because I know this this one girl and I mean she certainly deserves it right CU she got it you know three or four times some of them oh this is the third time Henry does it Henry artman he says well this is the third time this and I thought no no we don't want to do that so third time in different years or third time in yeah different years yeah different years of course before the spreadsheet I remember running to the prior teachers okay did this kid get it then go to the next grade down did they get it in your class or yeah just to make sure well I and and I and I'm not picking on anybody because I know sometimes when they they talked about it they kids would get it that they weren't the top student in their class or the best jock or something they were kids that just worked hard and that's what I like to see you know I've been involved with couple scholarships and we don't go on grades at all any other questions about the principles of director reports I really like Terry how you took the time to write down all of those comments I read every one of them and I was just like that's really interesting I appreciate you saying that I feel really bad because of our water main break I did not want to share that with all of you till I shared it with teachers because I just wanted them to realize and it was a huge risk you could see in they like I really like the kid who thought we needed in your principal that kind of that and honestly the child you know um but it was only one yeah that's true and that child and IA kind of had a tough conversation but um you know I think that conditions of learning like I said to you it's not a pure matchup but I just really think our teachers needed that win at nine weeks in to know like kids see and feel the difference of what you're doing this year and I didn't want teachers have to wait until 34 down the other thing is if our kids weren't feeling more positive about about things like that then we needed to reassess if our changes were really for them or more work for teachers so I appreciate you saying that cuz I felt very risk sharing all that but um we were going to meet on Friday and then uh with the weather with the water then be definitely late but I going to share that with the teachers so they see that I read every single one yeah I appreciate the kids being willing to share that information I think if you ask kids they need to know then that they're they you know what they shared was important yeah so we can make changes what me any other questions superintendent's report uh just a few quick things the make note of the behavior classroom at Lake View if you know somebody who is a has a teaching degree and and is interested in that kind of work uh please direct them to Brian or Julie uh definitely looking for the right person for the job uh big thank you to both Dave mccan and the city Crews uh for the work they did to help us with our water main break um the city actually had place about that um probably would have been our responsibility but I think they instead of pushing that they just wanted to help us get it done quickly and um so that was really good to them and Dave came up with some quick thinking to make it where we didn't have to we we could have been in for a week without school if he didn't come up with the ideas he came up with to get us in um just signed up for our first job fair of the Season at Northwest Missouri State very excited about that um Dr shares who I I put on my agenda sometimes about coming for leadership coaching is going to add three more of our administrators for coaching um starting in the new year so real excited we'll have almost our whole team uh getting that leadership coaching from her and I think most important um and this is not my win this is definitely a group of people's when that deserve it you noticed in Brian's report but I want to make sure it's said publicly um Blake view no longer has an S of designation which is I think the first time since accountability measures have come out um that's amazing I mean that that doesn't happen typically so it's a big win for the folks that are doing the work there anything else any questions if not we are board member takeaways and I'm going to start with Dr John I got to be firstbody thinking yes I am I am okay well I'll I'm not going to see too much different because I think the um I I was glad about the uh not so students wouldn't get more than once be recognized um the other thing I wanted to say that I you know I told Mike to start with being on the school board I've been on lots of different boards you know in this community and this one is probably the most exciting you know because there's so much going on on and you know when people know you're on the school board and you make yourself accessible you get lots of comments lots of comments and and sometimes they're good and sometimes they're bad but I but what Carol said I think was really important if the community had to go through the poverty type thing it would be just very enlightening to our community to see what the school has to deal with because you know it's it's a tough situation for all of that teachers and administrators and so I just think it's so important that we are you know are there for that positive influence for our schools Mr whis I'm going to also stay on the IB thing I think this was our third year in a row where everybody's attended the conference it's the second year in a row that we've got the better board award and I'll go back three years ago the first time I got it which I didn't know I was getting it I had no idea I qualified I got a call from Tammy D like a month before says you know you qualify I was like I what is the program I didn't even know and so but that year there were 100,00 school board members 100 people got it and there were like 15 districts that had better board work so then the next so that's when we put the challenge out the next year you know we we all got it and it was 200 they changed the rules in the metrics for the scoring they made it easier and so the next year you know we got the better board award first time and and everybody was on there and got it um except for two guys that going off the board I understand that um there were 200 people that got it Statewide and 20 districts this year because they they' made the point toll easier to obtain actually and now there's 300 for members in 30 districts and that first time they announc 13 districts had everybody in their board here so 13 out of 335 districts I don't know what percentage that but was pretty low had every one of their board members achieve a better board award and I know car you had to do a lot of extra you had to do the most work I did and I'm proud of you thank you it was very interesting all of it that's not exactly what you told me mar for that I did extra yeah actually cheaper know we miscounted that one point you did two extra okay so the point being I think that is it's a way for us to do a professional development it's a way for us as a board to do our our Le by example and it's our way to do the lifelong Lear and and I think that's that's an important thing to do and I'm just grateful for everyone in the board that took the time to do that now here's the good news you need 15 points to to get for next year and we got 12 except you probably have 15 and I think you got 15 this year and der's got 15 we got three already that have achieved it so the easiest way to do it is by C drop off for three-hour um workshop with us and we qualify for both Tammy and Siobhan actually yes because we have a special relationship with ISB so we have an offer on the table Yeah so uh so anyways it'll make it a lot easier for yes that'd be great so so I would just like to say I appreciate everyone in the board that has has made the effort to do that and I think it's it's a leadership by example that we should continue to do we appreciate you pushing us and the the funny part of it was when I would have be sitting with someone or in in a seminar or wherever most the in fact all of the people I talked to and I said all of our board is here and they they just couldn't believe that yeah why why would they all come I said because that's the kind of board we have we're unique we're unique in the state that we put that yes we are I'm glad you brought that that again I'm glad you uh encouraged us it's your turn Carol well I was going to talk about the poverty but I had to talk about it earlier but just to kind of clarify what I meant by Community it was that like Community organizations that are in the position of helping people move forward I was talking about you know those kinds of people having this training so um but I want to talk about Mark's safety presentation that was really informative and I think that that's what needed to get out and you know I I there are still things that we can't get out just just for safety reasons but um there was a lot of really good information for the public to see so good job thank you you're welcome thanks uh I'll go next uh I too enjoy that the poverty thing that people all talk about um and I really think it would be something that we could use especially for our staff but probably for the community and U the other thing that I always did as a teacher when I realized I wasn't going to be rich and I wasn't going to be famous and I was not going to get the teacher out I hero but what I could do was every day my goal was to be a hero one and my takeaway tonight would be to ask each and every one of you to be a hero to somebody tomorrow if you can do that it'll make a big difference in somebody's life Mr Mor you're next okay uh mine are I got two things that I think as a board we need to maybe look at moving forward here um number one is uh legal updates on student records and student information in the buildings uh making sure that we you know everybody knows what the state and federal laws are concerning when you can you know I guess our students you know Pera making sure that all our board knows all our staff knows that there's fed laws regarding all that um and I think that's important that we as a board understand it first off so um second one this one's really bugging me and I think we need to because we haven't had an update as a board um I think we need to get um someone high up from by state in here and explain why the high school addition is not done as it was supposed to be done and what all the holdups are and get a projected timeline I know we talked about it before I'm to the point of charging them every single day from this point forward I think that was kind of the tenor of the we had that last meeting wasn't it that sounds good there was some yeah there was some issues there there was another construction meeting th and I get the and I get the construction meetings but we can only have so many of us there but I need I guess for me I need someone from by state to come in and explain why they have now gone past two deadlines by a couple months now yeah okay I do know there's an issue still with some rooms too hot and some rooms too cold we're we're working on that it's getting a lot better some of that's warranty work I think on that and and I think there's I guess to me to me there is no excuse why we're still doing what we're doing why we're not in the parking lot for example yeah that's fair yes yeah cuz we got jacked on money if we did not quickly we gave him one extension as a board already yeah and they kind of laughed in our face at that in in my opinion and now they've gone way past what they're supposed to do already someone needs to come and explain well and it better be someone that has the answers to the questions yeah it's not like you can blame it on the weather it's beautiful I'll fall well we had a weather an issue with hot water and an architect couldn't solve it an engineer couldn't solve it I solved it the contractor couldn't solve it but Mr B solved it okay so he's the man but I think just in general as a board we need updated on that's right number one when it's going to be done and we give them a hard deadline and we start charging after that number two what the issues still are from the existing stuff that's done and stuff that needs completed I know there was issues in the high school kitchen about things weren't puted in the right place if that stuffs corrected I there's just I think we as a board need to know we're the ones who approve the money for it we need to know as a whole board yeah so our report would not only include by state but probably to be well and I know Aon you know he gets a lot of the the problems from it all but ultimately it's still on by state with that old condition so it is so I appreciate a everything Aon team has done but it's all on by state right now yeah and we have a we have a door that's pretty leaky to the weather right now out there that we want short up before it starts getting negative temperature so yeah that's good point so can we ask Aon and by state to kind of get some sort of presentation for us at the next meeting hi I gu guys want board but I know where's doing what he's supposed to do right and he's doing probably more than he's supposed to do I think Mar that being said I hope that it's done before our next meeting though kind of where I'm at because our next meeting is January it's not that it's not the first week in January it's the second week I think so and so I talked to the gentleman charge outside right now I don't know that he he's supposed to on Thursday timeline for us um and I can communicate that for now via my um board updates so we're not waiting until January for an update on that um but if for some reason it's not done by the time of our next meeting I think yeah absolutely somebody should probably be here to answer publicly why they're one three months overb at that point with an extension that was already the only reason I asked Aon to be involved is know to be done and we need to have and I I just sent Michelle and Lance a couple of things today of things that need to be touched up done right and stuff like that um they're they're close to being done like this the concrete's done um parking lot's pretty much it's done the main things that need to do there's some um there's a door down and the basement that needs to be installed the store front doors um on that north side ciding I knew it was going to take this long it's just the contractor they have doing it the front entry weight took them two and a half months to do yeah and that means there's no excuse for that no um and I think I guess from my from my standpoint of the single board member I think because we don't we don't see all the all those plans when we stuff I think there's still some safety issues that need taken care of on theth side where where well the ramp going down um to me there needs to be some sort of roof over those stairs going down there needs to be some sort of chain link fence around that there will be okay so but we don't I guess as a board see that stuff that I think is one of the reasons that when we talked about because they were willing to open the parking lot to us at that last construction meeting but because some of that stuff wasn't completed I think we're we want them to have the job done before we take that before that safety fence around that area is down cuz we'll be Li for that happens there right now they don't have the safety set up around that pit area or former pit area I guess that we need now the roof over the stairs there is no roof going over those stairs right but I've already made plans to build one ourselves next summer I see that as both a convenience and a safety issue I remember having a conversation I of you are K from I see that it would be cheaper if we did it ourselves not get all their bar Cod and stuff because we had some conversations about the snow getting down in C yeah I think just I think just moving forward I think everything at one point once we once we kind of checked off that broking the addition as a board we didn't talk about construction anymore yeah yeah that's fair so good point sorry about that no no I mean uh at this point we are ready to move to close session um I need to gra I forgot to bring it in why don't we take a short recess she get ready I was them and see what they I knew it wasant but I
