On a gold nugget weather day with sunshine and cobalt blue skies, construction crews were hard at work building a state-of-the-art trail at Bunker Hills Regional Park. >> It's a,000 ft boardwalk that's 12 ft wide. It's a amazing super structure. We're building it for the future. According to Jeff Perry from the In Noa County Parks Department, this $2 million boardwalk will be money well spent. >> It's for public use. It uh crosses the very northern edge of Bunker Lake here in Bunker uh Hills Regional Park and uh it is built uh for the test of time. It's going to last uh for 30 to 50 years. Uh everything built on the project is structural. So it uh stands on helical peers that are uh driven anywhere from 20 to 50 ft subsurface through the wetland. From the air, the scope of this project comes into focus. The boardwalk slices through a scenic wetland and Perry says it will be able to hold up to 8,000 lbs. >> There's plenty of room for pedestrian traffic, bike traffic, etc. And in the center of the boardwalk, uh, out in the middle of the wetland is a wildlife observation area. So, it's a bumpout area. We're going to place a couple benches out there. We can get people out there to, uh, uh, you know, view Bunker Lake uh, and all the various wildlife that, uh, that will use it. This particular marsh type wetland is frequented by sand hill cranes, trumpeter swans, uh various bird species. So it it truly is going to uh connect people with the wetland h surrounding wetland habitat. >> Construction crews have been building the boardwalk all winter. >> Our target completion date is Memorial Day. >> When finished, Bunker will have a better boardwalk that will need little upkeep. The structure of this one uh compared to the old floating boardwalk uh is significantly more stable. Uh this essential bridge or boardwalk will not move. It is a uh non-flating boardwalk that's uh stable. So if you're on a bike or pushing a baby stroller, uh it's literally like uh crossing a bridge at Bunker Hills Regional Park.
