During the approval of the consent agenda, board member Laura inquired about pulling the READ Act Memorandum of Understanding for separate consideration. Board member Jessica then declared her abstention from voting on the entire consent agenda, citing a conflict of interest because the READ Act MOU was an addendum to the 710 contract, which covers her spouse's employment. The chair confirmed the motion would proceed without amending the agenda or pulling the item.

The board considered and discussed a resolution to accept various community contributions, including monetary donations to the high school scholarship fund, athletic programs, and a scoreboard for Columbia Academy. An in-kind donation of a 1927 boys basketball team picture was also acknowledged. Board members expressed gratitude for the community's generosity and discussed the historical significance of the in-kind gift.

Building Capacity at Valley View: Closing Kindergarten and Grade Two to Open Enrollment

Motion carries unanimously.

Dissent: None.

Moved by Laura [0:23:40] · Seconded by Julie [0:23:44]

The Superintendent presented a recommendation to close kindergarten and second grade at Valley View Elementary to open enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year. This measure was necessary due to high resident student enrollment numbers, with both grades reaching or exceeding capacity. Board members voiced support for the motion, noting it as a positive indicator of the district's quality and its ability to attract new families to the community. Questions were raised regarding the enrollment of existing pre-kindergarten students and siblings of currently open-enrolled students, with the Superintendent clarifying the district's procedures and right of assignment.

I will be abstaining from the consent agenda uh specifically uh because of item D the redou um as it is anou uh addendum to the 710 contract and my spouse is employment is covered by that contract.

I just figured if we pulled that out and voted on that separately then then obviously your vote would still and be U uh quite appropriate for the rest of those items.

Building Capacity at Valley View: Closing Kindergarten and Grade Two to Open Enrollment

this is actually one of the things that I was able to share and that delighted people the most is you know first of all that open enrollment has its own set of rules and laws that we have to follow but also that um when families are finding out that we've closed to open enrollment we have more families moving into the community and this closing it for kindergarten is really massively unheard of.

I'm wondering if the same thing is true for any students who may have been uh like prek students at Valley VI that we're then going into kindergarten we have spaces for any of those students.
