outstanding so you can um the opportunity for scholarships are there so these two um last fall which are juniors are getting ready to take tomorrow um took the pat National Merit um exam and their scores put them in the upper Asana students who took that and so then it kind of connects their score with opportunities and different foundations for scholarships and I've talked to them both about yep next we have our discussion reports information items and we'll start with reports from members of the board um and we will start with Michelle was GNA say I've went a long streak I didn't know if it was because I was in the middle here and not only is and I was like I'm just going to see all righty um so I attended the fall cleanup um my family and I cleaned up at uh Lael Park which was a lot of fun I realized there was a whole another side to the park that I did not notice last time we cleaned up so sorry for missing half the park last time we got it this time um um we also attended the Columbia Heights Fire department uh open housee which is always a lot of fun um they have demonstrations and food and vendors uh lots of information and community members just a great time um I I also attended a Mee and greet at uh Legends um uh it's a retirement center and it it's just a lot of fun to talk to people and and pick their brains and see where where their heads are and just you know receive them where they are and have them receive you so that was a good experience I attended the um the city council work session last week um where they had a discussion about the work that they're uh contemplating doing on Central a I mean they're going to do work but they're trying to decide what they want to do so that was a great discussion um there was lots of uh thoughts mainly from uh council member uh k um so it was it was a really good discussion though and and really good idea so I look forward to seeing what they come up with um I also attended the city council meeting after that gave them an update on Schoolboard things and just um some things that we had going on uh since since the last time I was there I attended um the equity committee meeting at North Park uh for their Community engagement kind of subcommittee to that committee and uh they they're doing some good work trying to get out there and reach parents and get the um the families involved more in the students education and things like that so they have more things coming up too I attended last week's work session um I volunteered at Spooktacular last um last week which was hosted by Heights next uh and local Community member Michelle Smith who uh uh started this last year and so this was year two a lot of people attended there was s'mores and cider and lots of uh carved pumpkins um to Trail the way and lots of cute kiddos and dogs and parents in their costumes so was a really good time then and uh I also attended um a bip collected leaders Network meeting um last week as well and I'm sure I may have left something out but I mean by goodness that's enough thanks excellent thank you Michelle Julie I had a slow week compared to you um I did attend the work session on Tuesday thank you Julie Jessica just a few things to report um I was able to attend the Fall Festival that was co-hosted by Columbia Academy and Valley View were you there too I was there too um it was a great event I think this was their second year hosting a joint event last year they held a joint um event around the theme of safety um and this year they had um really great participation from um Community groups um a lot of resource is made available to families there was lots of food um lots of uh foot traffic between both of the buildings they had games outside to play it was a very um festive event and very well-run so that was really fun I also attended the work session last week and then I also reviewed um msba um recorded a webinar last week on work after the election and it was a good reminder to me of all of the administrative work that goes into conducting elections um on the school district side and so uh just a appreciation to our staff um that are engaged in that work and making sure that we're compliant and meeting all of those deadlines um so that was a that was a um an excellent presentation and it's available to anyone as a recording thank you thank you Jessica Laura um I don't have a lot to report um I did attend the work session um last week and I also attended the um city council um uh work session as well um and was very interesting to see just how different Central Avenue can look with this new vision um uh so lots of roundabouts and traffic calming um uh less stop lights which would be very nice um closing off that five corners I thought sounded very interesting didn't realize that was on the table um so I I I know that they are still looking at public comments and I believe is it next week they said two weeks they we're going to have next it yeah I believe it's next week I check the um the city website um for more details um just like when we did our strategic plan it's really incredibly important that the community um voices their decisions because um this this plan will be with us for 50 years so it's going to affect more than just our generation it's going to affect how how Columbia Heights thrives and looks um over you know over the next 50 years um so that was very interesting but that's all I have to report thank you Mary um I don't think anybody has as busy a week as member pway um I wasn't trying to win anything no I mean I uh so I have mostly spent a lot of time since our last meeting having conversations with students and families and community members um and really just it's been pretty wonderful to be able to highlight a lot of the good work that we're doing as a school district um especially when a lot of people have questions about uh because they hear in the news about deficit spending in a lot of the districts around us and it's been very um it's been nice to be able to tell people about the fact that we are not in that place and also be able to thank people um voters for that so um really people have been very very excited to hear about the work that we're doing so that's been really fantastic um I also attended the event uh the co the event between CA and Valleyview that was as member pway said or me Madera said sorry you were also there but um there was so many people there I didn't even get to talk to member maderas although we were past each other in the night like that um other than that uh phone calls with a couple of board members and pretty lowkey besides so great thank you thank you um I also had a a pretty late couple of weeks here um last week I did attend the chair meeting um prior to the work session and the work session with Vice chair granin was also at those um as well as the chair meeting just prior to this meeting which you also at I was also at that yep yes um and that is it for my report um next we have the superintendent's report and correspondence superintendent simic thank you uh the Schoolboard student Schoolboard application is now live um and is being communicated out to Columbia Heights High School students I did want to let the board know that um in working with director Henderson I was able to confirm that the the student school board members uh will be eligible to earn a letter so that's very exciting that was a great idea from you all um the application closes on November 14th and the board received that timeline so it's being pushed out in various modalities at the high school so really exciting for that um another high school announcement that I wanted to let the board know is that principal win in collaboration with me and a team of Staff um have made the decision to move our graduation ceremony off campus um as much as we love the setting of our Stadium uh we really need a facility that has larger capacity at this point ease of parking more restrooms and increased we also need increased ability to ensure safety um which has become you know more and more challenging as the years have gone on um the location will be Aldrich Arena the date will be June 11th and families will be communicated with this week so I wanted to let you know it's kind of a big change um before that comes out um lastly um in terms of what I've been up to over mea weekend I was able to participate in our Native American education program trip to maax um I want to Express gratitude for the maax band of ojibway for host for their Hospitality in hosting our students and inviting us to participate in important cultural events that's it thank you very much um next we have our Assurance of compliance with state and federal law prohibiting uh discrimination with directors Bennett and assistant superintendent nambo chair Mueller members of the board superintendent stenvik this is an annual um resolution that we bring to the board um it has to be reported by November 15th and all school districts must complete it's an assurance of compliance with state and federal law um and verify mandated reporting Again by November 15th the Assurance of compliance um require school districts to provide written assurance that they do not discriminate in their use of funds provided through the minister Department of Education and that they have informed all mandated reporters of their reporting duties so the Assurance is completed online by superintendent stenvik um and it'll be brought forward on November 12th as part of the consent agenda great thank you and we do have um the statement of compliance in uh board book does anybody have any questions and we will see you back at our November 12th meeting uh for action item consent agenda oh consent agenda yes you said that thank you thank you consent to jenda item for November 12th thank you um next we have um our fall season activity update um and we have our activities director Jake Henderson can you all see and hear me we can I think uh superintendent stenick is uh pulling that up perfectly thank you uh well chair Mueller members of the board uh superintendent stenvik thank you all for having me uh this evening our mission in Columbia Heights is uh to create worlds of opportunity for each and every learner all belong and all succeed uh our informational item uh this evening will uh connect to all of our core values and similar to what we've focused on in the past uh we have uh some of the things that we've shared with our families and our uh coaching and activities staff um but just that we're focusing on our community being as competitive as possible creating a positive culture and then looking out for the social emotional and physical well-being of our students um I am excited to to share our fall activities update it has been uh super quick uh it always is but it seems quicker this year I'm not sure why um but as we usually do uh I share some participation numbers for you and to tonight I think it was asked maybe at our winter or spring meeting for me to just break down um high school and um Columbia Academy numbers and I hadn't done that for you in the past so you'll see those numbers here tonight um mostly steady across Ross the board um we've got a couple up couple down um and uh so those are those are our participation numbers in the fall it's been a it's been a good fall with a lot of kids participating in both um at Columbia Academy as well as um at the high school one really exciting thing that was long overdue is our uh Columbia Academy uh gym update so both the boo boers uh Columbia Heights boosters and the Columbia Heights Basketball Association were able to make significant uh donations to help make this happen and so want to thank them publicly for that even though um we know how much uh specifically the boosters and the Columbia Heights Basketball Association have done for us in the past but we were able to get new scoreboards at Columbia Academy in the gym uh we got a Fresh coat of paint um it looks fantastic in there and then we've got a ton of wall and door Graphics that both highlight Columbia Academy but also kind of bridge that Gap uh too and uh really hopefully uh get the students excited about uh being a Highlander as well um up at the high school and so kind of bridging that uh introducing those uh new or uh restoring some of those colors back to that gym and I know that principal burkus and and the whole staff down there and uh many of the kids especially the high schoolers which I'll highl in a second when they went down there for the homecoming tour we were just amazed at how it looked so exciting uh news down there at Columbia Academy and then we just have a couple of Fall updates I will keep it as brief as possible but uh many of you took uh part in some of the homecoming week things that we did and it was it was a phenomenal week and I've been a part of the district since 2011 and I can honestly say this was the most fun that I've had uh during a home week and just the biggest uh amount of high Highlander Pride that I've seen in our community and um it was incredibly exhausting I was super tired and and I know all our staff was um but it was a really fun week and we tried to highlight all of our activities and our our sports during The Fall season um and we had some really good participation from our community and our staff and our students at those events and kind of capped it off with that amazing Highlander tour some of you were a part of that to um we capped off with a football win and then uh my family for the first time was able to experience those fireworks and so that was really exciting um and they were super impressed um as well as most of our community was too and so um just a awesome awesome week um and as I said it was it was tiring but it was it was really well worth it so uh we also have some leadership opportunities that our students have taken part in and uh our students took part in the tri Metro fall leadership conference in August we're going to send 12 of our students to the together and partnership by the Minnesota State High School league in November here or towards the end of November we also have another leadership conference uh we don't have a date set that for that yet for the tri Metro conference but we're trying to do one of those leadership conferences per season and really just build some more Community um in addition to what we do here at home at Heights for some of our high school leaders and all activities and uh really grow um just that community of leaders um which really helps uh our our positive culture throughout the building and throughout uh our teams uh most actually not most all of our CA Sports Seasons have come to an end now um robotics is still running and thriving and they're just about to have their uh first meet most of those students are at CA we've got a couple at uh the high school and most of our high School sports are nearing an end or into their section tournaments uh this week or next and so tomorrow we've got cross country and volleyball into their section tournaments and then Saturday we've got the the football team and so it's been a good high school season uh we don't have anyone moving on to state yet uh but we did have an Allstate uh soccer player so excited uh for him um and then finally uh right before we get to that video um we really challenged our uh head coaches just to be more intentional about Community Building uh this season and uh it's been really awesome to see what they've done with that and some of the things they've done in the past but they've really built on that um but we've had some teams that have gone to co we we've had several teams that have gone to college games within uh the Twin Cities area they've shared a lot of meals together uh several of our sports teams participated participated in overnight trips our high schoolers have gone their entire team has gone down to see the middle school and uh vice versa the middle school has come up to see some of those events too as an entire team um and really it's just been awesome to witness and um some of these things were happening um but really highlighting them and making them and putting them at the Forefront uh has been really exciting and it's been great for our community it's been great for a positive culture um and there's long lasting effect that we we won't even see yet uh right now just uh building that highight in their pride and so it's been it's been great uh to see in a really Testament to our coaches that have uh stepped up and um put in that time and effort uh so that is our fall update I I always like to share some pictures with you and so I think uh super in superintendent stenvik will share a little video uh that we put together of some of our Fall highlights with some pictures see if I can get it to [Music] work oh I can see it but you cannot let me try something else I think it's open twice please move this window away from the shared application what does that mean okay okay I'm going to try something different no worries director Henderson I'll get it there what a day for director Henkin to not be [Music] here you can't see it that's weird I can see it it okay I see sorry third times the charm I think is try one more time we believe in you you got this I'm going to wait until I see it on the screen before I okay there you go what [Music] [Music] [Music] good [Music] [Music] [Music] this is back to the [Music] beginning that's cool that's my presentation for you thank you superintendent stenc for getting that uh running I appreciate it yeah thank you and for board members I know it's a little bit small for us on the screens the link does work in the board book um so you can um open the PowerPoint under this item on board book and the last slide has a link to the picture slideshow so you can see it on there so um any questions for uh Mr Henderson Jessica not a question just a comment thank you for the presentation I do really appreciate seeing the breakdown of um participation between Columbia Academy and the high school I think it's really exciting to see um how much active participation we have from students in all of our activities um at the middle school level as well as the high school level um and especially knowing that um some of those activities um have middle schoolers and high school students um working together I think that that's just really cool to see that collaboration so I appreciate that break down thank you any other questions or comments Mary um I thank you so much I Echo what member Madera said uh I'm glad to see uh the numbers it's wonderful to see how um students that were you know possibly involved in activities in Middle School just continue on and I know it means a lot to those students when high schoolers come back down to celebrate them too and like you said that does absolutely go to build Community um I noticed that the play is on here as well and I meant to add this to my report but I feel like this is also a really good spot for it um a few weeks ago I had an opportunity to talk with uh the Attorney General of Minnesota Keith Ellison and his wife and they had a family member who graduated last year and participated um in the in the place and uh his wife is Colombian and she told me how amazing it was for her to to be able to come to our plays and to see our Multicultural um student body and to see that uh up on the play stage and it was really wonderful to see people who were connected with our school district um through through family members but not necessarily you know I think it was her niece um but to hear them also be so proud of the work that we're doing here and the play I think that that's really important um to share so if you would help me share that message as well back to people um I think we're doing such amazing work and you know people want to be active and participate in all of the things and I love how um how this participation numbers it's not just about sports it's about all of the things so um thank you so much for for sharing this and I look forward to seeing you on Thursday at the robotics meet thank you one comment I want to make too is um Mr Hendon thank you to to you and to Crystal um and everything that your team does um and to all of our coaches and volunteers um looking just at your your slide with all of the activities you know these are these are a portion of the things our students can get involved in right this is just coming through the activities in athletics department you know there's 12 different um things that our students can be involved in and and there's a lot of students who are um represented on this list and just you know as member granin said the um the variety of things that our students have to choose from and to be involved in so thank you to to both you and Crystal and to all of our coaches and advisers um just really providing that that world of opportunity for for all of our students Jess yes I just meant to comment too looking ahead at the agenda we're going to be talking about some uh resolutions related to the the Minnesota State High School league Foundation um and some of those Grant dollars are what allow us to conduct um some of this leadership training and community building for students and so I think it's really helpful um to the community at large and also to um me personally as a board member to kind of see that in action through the activities update to be able to know how those uh Grant dollars that we receive uh really do impact student leadership development within the activities department so um just knowing that that's on the agenda a little bit later I just wanted to kind of make that connection uh in this conversation thank you thank you any other comments great well perfect segue then um and we will move into our action items our first action item is the Minnesota State High School league Foundation form a application for for resolution well I'm back up uh thank you again for having me uh chair Mueller uh members of the board and superintendent stenvik um I won't go through the mission or the core values again uh but last time last board meeting I did uh present on the Minnesota State High School league Foundation both form a and Form B um again that Foundation was uh created in 2007 and its purpose is really just to support youth participation in athletics and Fine Arts um the two grants are a little bit different um as uh described last time um but uh as as you all described they they serve a purpose um in helping us do what we can do in the activities Department not only for opportunities to play but opportunities for uh leadership um learning and trainings and just building a community of leaders in our own uh schools additionally there are you know even some uh Health pieces in there with you know we're seeking to to get new AED as well um and so uh lots of opportunities for us to um not only support our students uh support our leadership but also um uh Emergency Services as well uh with with this grant money and so it is my recommendation that we uh pass the resolution for both for both form a and Form B from the Minnesota State High School league foundation and I would be happy to fill out those grants thank you um since this is a resolution I will read this um we have form a a resolution of governing board supporting form a application to Minnesota State High School league Foundation whereas the Minnesota State High School league Foundation was formed to provide support for Minnesota's High School youth to participate in athletics and Fine Arts whereas the governing board of Columbia Heights School District number 13 uh recognizes the value of student participation in extracurricular activities and whereas the mshsl foundation is offering grants and funding to assist schools in recognizing promoting and funding extracurricular participation by high school students in athletic and Fine Arts pro programs therefore be it resolved that the governing board of Columbia Heights Public School number 13 supports the School's application of the Minnesota State High School league foundation for a form a grant to offset Student Activity fees I get a motion to approve the adoption of the MH mshsl Foundation Grant a resolution so moved Mary and a second second second by Julie any discussion all right as this is the resolution we'll do a roll call vote Michelle you do the role please yeah um Palmer I pway I madas I who I granin I Mueller I resolution passes thank you thank you and next we have the Minnesota State High School league Foundation Form B application resolution for 2024 2025 and we can just move right into this Mr Henderson as I think you um explained both of them well unless you had something else you wanted to add for Form B oh thank you okay thank you all right uh Form B again this is the resolution I will read uh Form B resolution of Schoolboard governing board supporting formb application to Minnesota State High School league Foundation where as the Minnesota State High School league Foundation was formed to provide support for Minnesota's High School youth to participate in athletics and Fine Arts whereas the governing board of Columbia Heights Public School District number 13 recognizes the value of student participation in extracurricular activities and whereas mshsl Foundation is offering grants and funding to assist schools to provide seminars training opportunities or support for specific School functions for students faculty members and officials and others who are involved in athletic and Fine Arts programs therefore be it resolved that the governing board of Columbia Heights Public School District number 13 supports the School's application to the Minnesota State High School league foundation for a formb grant can I get a motion to adopt the uh formb resolution Grant so moved Julie and a second second second by Jessica any discussion all right again this is a resolution so um Michelle you do the RO please yep Palmer I pway I um m i h i um granin I and Mueller I thank you resolution passes thank you all very much and thank you um Mr Henderson as well thank you all for your time have a good evening thank you um next we have our uh School Board goals um so these are the school board uh shows our priorities and and attainable goals and and great strides that we want to make I appreciate all the work that goes into this and giv us just a clear Direction on where we want to go and uh where to focus uh collectively right because we all have our own ideas and and thoughts and and frequencies that we work in but this kind of brings us all together so we can continue to be a unified board so um and and to you know move it forward to the next board and things like that so I I appreciate this and thanks thank you good discussion any other discussion well thank you I know that this was U put together at a work session um and um you know had conversation um at our previous work session as well um again I think these are really strong goals um for the board as we continue to work together hand inand with um with moving in the right direction with our district so thank you all for that um oh Laura I just wanted to make a quick comment I was actually kind of um I'm not surprised really we are a very collaborative board it's but but um really encouraged on how we all really just kind of focused in on this and said oh yes we need to do that and that was really incredibly incred it's going to be incredibly gratifying to see as we're working on this how we can bring more of that collaboration and understanding and um and be wiser in our decisions and understanding um uh what we're asking of everybody too so uh I I just wanted to express my appreciation to everybody here excellent agreed thank you Laura thank you Laura all right um since uh any other discussion hearing
