I I want to give back to nature. Nature has given me a lot and it's helped shape my life, given me uh a place to be, something to do, and I want to give back. And I decided years ago that Springbrook would be the a good place to do it. My name's Neil Hayford. I'll be 79 in August and I've been coming here for 35 years. I think I've been on the board for 35 years. Springbrook is u 127 acres and we've got about 3 and 1/2 miles of trails. I come here five and six days a week, sometimes 7 days a week. Usually what I do is check the bird feeders, fill the bird feeders, clean them, adjust them. Like today I'm going to put up um hummingbird feeders. Uh hoping to get some. Often times I would be going out and doing litter uh pickup. That gives me a chance to get out in the park and see the whole park. And I'm having more fun doing different things here. They'll have me do odd jobs. I go, "Well, Neil can do that." Chances are I probably can. I was a plumbing contractor for my plumbing heating contractor for my career for many, many years. And I was doing a plumbing job in somebody's home and they had pictures of wild flowers on their dining room wall and I could identify them all and she looked at me and says, "You belong on our board." And she was a board member. So she invited me to come. That was 35 years ago and that's what I've been doing ever since. The board is here basically to support Spring Brook Nature Center and we do uh two fundraisers a year. The Spring Spree, which is a auction dinner, real nice evening out. We also do an autumn sampler, which is a craft beer and wine event. volunteering in the committee and working with other uh members of the community. The the good feeling you get from that, bringing somebody on to help as a volunteer. I think that's the best feeling you can get. come to Springbrook and and enjoy the outdoors activities, the uh the beauty, the green in the in the summertime in the wintertime, the stark beauty of the trees against the white snow. All seasons is good out here. I wasn't expecting to make so many friends, I don't think. All my life I've been quite an introvert and now for Spring Brook I consider myself an extrovert to get out and talk to the community and it has changed my life. I think I grew up with kind of that song uh I am an island and I don't need anybody else and now I've got a whole bunch of friends and I think I think that is great part of the community.
