[0:04] Hi, I'm Angela and I'm a fourth grader at Hayes Elementary School. Hi everybody, I'm Rashan. I'm [0:09] a fourth grader here at Stevenson Elementary. Our referendum passed last school year which allowed [0:14] for our district to add tons of new awesome things including new furniture at our elementary schools. [0:19] Come explore it with me. Let's go. What was your goal in updating these classrooms? First, [0:26] we looked at safety, making sure that everything was sturdy and we replaced things that were 30 [0:31] plus years old. Then, we looked at functionality and having some consistency in our classroom. And [0:36] then, we looked at how we could have agency in our classrooms for our students and for our teachers [0:42] so that we could bring joy to our classroom and to our school. What is your new favorite [0:47] addition to this space? The favorite thing that I like is our new tables that we got this year. our [0:52] students can sit together and collaborate. And so it really helps the kids with their social skills [0:56] and sharing and working together. Can you show us something cool about the tables? Yes. Okay. So, [1:03] first of all, I'm going to show you how they move. If I step on it like that, [1:09] you needed a big space like this to spread out and be creative. How does these new updates help [1:16] you teach better? My students get a choice on where they get to sit for whole group lessons, [1:20] small group lessons. We see a lot of collaboration in different spaces in my room. Can you show me [1:25] your favorite addition in the space? My favorite part of the room and my students favorite part [1:30] of the room is this hightop table. I like how updated it is with the height. It's easy [1:35] for me to be able to stand as well as the student stand and work if they choose. So, [1:39] how do you like it? I like how the chairs are designed. Can you show me how your students use [1:45] the flexible seating? Sure. These are our floor chairs, for example. So, you can grab one and then [1:51] kids can take them wherever they want to in the room and sit comfortably. What do you think about [1:57] it? Really comfortable. What new things have you noticed in the school? In the cafeteria, [2:03] there are new tables. They have colored seats and they're round. Have you noticed sound panels in [2:08] the school? Yes, there are some in the cafeteria. It helps to have them because you can have better [2:14] conversations here in your space. What has changed in this space which serves as a space [2:22] for teachers and staff and also students to collaborate? It kind of changed a lot. So, [2:29] we got some fresh flooring and paint, but then we also got some really nice new furniture [2:35] spaces that work really well in this space. What have you heard from others about the new [2:41] additions to our building? I have heard so many wonderful compliments about our new building. [2:47] People are highlighting the fact that we have flexible seating. They are also commenting on [2:52] how beautiful our spaces are for our students to be learning in. Do you have anything that [2:57] you would like to say to the community? I think for me the most important thing I would like to [3:01] say is thank you. It's really taking pride in our community and showing our students that we care. [3:07] Why do you think it's important for these students to have these spaces? Our students deserve the [3:12] absolute best. Starting with a safe, warm learning environment, but also a place where they are [3:17] going to thrive and do so great academically and reach their highest potential. I think I agree.
