[0:00] approximately 119 miles of city-owned [0:03] road runs through Chanhassen keeping [0:06] them in good working condition takes a [0:08] lot of preparation and [0:09] [Music] [0:13] planning before any road project the [0:15] city of Chanhassin's engineering [0:17] department spends a lot of time planning [0:18] and designing it's a lot of people and a [0:21] lot of steps to make sure that it's done [0:23] correctly step one in the design process [0:25] is planning the preliminary design to [0:28] plan out what we need to do we first [0:29] need to get the lay of the land and [0:31] understand what we're working with we [0:32] gather this information through [0:33] examining the site in person surveying [0:35] residents and through the overall [0:37] condition index score which is something [0:38] we go into more depth in in our [0:40] selection process video which you can [0:42] find a link for in the description we [0:44] consider traffic volumes whether they're [0:45] increasing or decreasing if there are [0:47] storm water drainage issues if there [0:50] need to be safety improvements and any [0:51] public utility improvements like sewer [0:53] or water that should be part of the plan [0:55] as we select our rehabilitation method [0:58] next we sit down and assess the needs [1:00] and prioritize the sort of rehab roads [1:02] will get based on the funding that we [1:04] have projects are sorted by their cost [1:06] and benefit and our long-term planning [1:08] goals we only have so many funds each [1:10] year for projects so we have to make [1:12] sure we're working as effectively as [1:14] possible with what we have 30 60 90 100% [1:19] design these are design stages [1:21] represented by the percentage of the way [1:23] through the design process a project is [1:26] at 30% we're designing the basic layouts [1:29] at 60% we're reviewing the preliminary [1:32] designs and exploring alternative [1:33] solutions to any specific issues that [1:36] need addressing at 90 to 100% we go [1:39] through the nitty-gritty details in the [1:41] end a final design is approved by the [1:43] city council and the project moves to [1:45] bidding while that 30 60 90 100% meter [1:49] is filling up we start the environmental [1:51] and regulatory review process because [1:53] concrete and asphalt don't absorb storm [1:55] water water has to flow to the proper [1:57] areas so that natural resources such as [2:00] wetlands aren't disturbed and your [2:03] basement doesn't flood could stretching [2:05] the road out to the west impact [2:06] endangered species like the long-eared [2:08] American bat and the rusty patch [2:09] bumblebee if we level this hill what [2:11] does that mean for the nearby vegetation [2:13] every project we undertake has the [2:16] potential to impact the environment [2:17] around it we work with watershed [2:19] districts road authorities the Minnesota [2:21] Department of Natural Resources and [2:23] other organizations to make sure that [2:24] our decisions have as low of an [2:26] environmental impact as possible while [2:28] meeting all [2:30] regulations when that meter gets to be [2:32] around the 30 to 60% mark we open a [2:35] dialogue with area residents address any [2:37] concerns and provide any relevant [2:39] updates on the project the earlier we [2:41] can get that engagement through things [2:43] like surveys and open houses the better [2:45] we can plan the larger more impactful [2:47] the project the more community [2:49] engagement once we've received all the [2:52] necessary approvals and incorporated all [2:54] the applicable feedback it's go time we [2:56] finalize the design and prepare the [2:58] detailed plans and specifications for [3:00] contractors to bid on most local road [3:03] projects go through a low bid process [3:05] and a responsible contractor is selected [3:08] and awarded a contract by the city [3:09] council the planning and design process [3:12] is crucial to getting what we want a [3:13] quality road within our budget much of [3:16] the preparation and planning is done to [3:18] get the community the best bang for its [3:20] buck thank you for taking some time to [3:22] learn about the planning and design [3:24] process next up we'll take a deeper dive [3:26] into the construction process for other [3:29] information about the projects happening [3:30] around Chanhassen visit [3:32] chanhassenm.gov/projects [3:34] [Music]
