City Council celebrates Size Bar and Grill's 77-year downtown legacy
At its August 7 meeting, the Chaska City Council featured Size Bar and Grill, a downtown institution that has operated for nearly eight decades under new ownership. Mayor Taylor Hubbard and Council Member Michaela Hatfield interviewed owner Kent Krampe about his vision for the restaurant and its role in the community.
Size Bar and Grill, located at the corner of Highway 41 and 61 in downtown Chaska, has been a fixture in the community since its founding 77 years ago as Size Liquor. The business operated in its original location for 52 years before relocating to its current spot at the Chaska Mill, across from City Hall. New owner Kent Krampe, who grew up in Eden Prairie and studied hospitality management at Iowa State University, previously operated restaurants in Minneapolis, including a Raising Cane's location.
Krampe emphasized his commitment to preserving the restaurant's legacy while modernizing its operations. His priorities include retaining existing staff, redeveloping the menu, and strengthening ties to the local community. The restaurant has already begun expanding its catering services, working with local institutions like Way School and Carver Elementary to provide meals and event services.
A significant part of the conversation focused on honoring Size's original founder, Sy, through a commissioned mural project. This effort reflects Krampe's dedication to integrating the restaurant's rich history into its present identity and maintaining its connection to Chaska's heritage.
Krampe also highlighted the collaborative spirit among downtown business owners, citing relationships with neighboring establishments like Red Bench and the Hayloft. He emphasized the unique "small town feel" of downtown Chaska and his long-term investment philosophy. The restaurant's versatile event space now hosts various community gatherings, from baby showers to team meetings, demonstrating its expanded role beyond traditional dining. The council's feature underscores the city's investment in celebrating and supporting its established local businesses.
