patrick hey hi i actually have a business card i get a business card i do oh i said the trend you did trend setters wait oh did i bring him hold up thank you thank you ma'am one you're helping oh i've got one yeah yeah i got more than one do you thank you sure perfect well i just want to start off by saying thank you all for deciding to join this committee i think all together we're going to do great work and help represent the 55 plus community which might not always be represented when the council has discussions so just thank you all for being here um if i haven't met you yet my name is alyssa swanson i work as the assistant to the city manager at the city of victoria and i'll be the staff liaison for the senior advisory committee so i'll be helping uh facilitate these meetings and give the agendas and send emails out and kind of be that person behind the scenes and then doing the staff presentations for you during our meetings now because this is our first initial meeting for the senior advisory committee we don't have a chair so i'll be kind of doing the chairs role today just to know we will be electing or appointing a chair and a vice chair later today and then after that or after today's meeting and following meetings they'll be taking on kind of that facilitation role for our committee if you have any questions if you have a look at the agenda and you're not quite sure what's on there you know be you can just interrupt me you can raise your hand and just say hey what what is this or just feel free to ask questions there's no you know you don't have to stand up and address or anything like that just ask any questions you'd like so i will get started by calling this first meeting of the senior advisory committee meeting to order on february or february april 5th at 10 04 a.m again most of this meeting will be orientation and kind of introductions feel free to interrupt me and ask questions if you need to excuse me drink some coffee quick so i thought we'd start today off by just going through and introducing ourselves because i don't know many of you and i'm sure many of you don't know me or each other um so i'll start i'll just say that alyssa swanson like i said before uh assistant to the city manager i started working at the city uh since august of 2019 so a little over a year and a half ago and um it's a wonderful city to work for i would not choose a better organization to be a part of not only are the residents fantastic to work for but my colleagues at city hall and public works in our fire department and all of our facilities are just fantastic individuals so very glad to be here and i'm really glad to be part of this committee so that's a little bit about me and if you wouldn't mind just sharing a little bit about yourself whether if you want to say how long you've lived in victoria maybe what neighborhood you're part of why you joined this committee that would be awesome and i'll start right to my right with sue my name is sue bill we've lived in victoria for 20 years we live in deer run we have two children one in chanhassen one in waconia we're right in the middle four grandchildren i retired two and a half years ago from the city of chanhassen um prior to that i've probably been in different capacities working in the field of aging gerontology both in a community setting in a healthcare setting and just have a passion for older adults looking at their needs trying to be part of the evolution of change and how they're growing and there are many things impacting seniors and i'm excited to be part of the victoria as a resident and to help to kind of look at issues that are important to people our age well i'm jan jacobson and i'm new to victoria by about four months um i just moved into the bethesda cornerstone villas over there um i actually was a resident of chanhassen for about 23 years and on the spur of the moment last october decided to sell my house and i'm i'm thinking that that was probably a rush decision but it it happened and here i am so i'm happy to be in victoria my background is my husband and i have owned several businesses we owned a garbage collection company serving richfield bloomington eden prairie for about 20 years extensive customer contact i ran the office and did all the pr for that the second company was a vending company and that was dealing with corporate lunchrooms and we served corporations and businesses throughout the metro area i also had a career for 15 years in hr corporate hr and and enjoyed that a great deal and of course i worked with employees for many many years so i have a huge uh i would say communication background uh business background um and i just thought that this sounded interesting i really never considered myself a senior citizen until i sold my house and i thought oh my gosh i think i am so um i thought this sounded interesting i'm really excited to see what we can do for victoria awesome thank you yeah hi i'm dave kleinfelder moved to victoria about six years ago from excelsior and prior to that chicago uh yeah similar to jan as you get to be a senior citizen you start thinking about things a little bit differently you know i've got several close friends a group of us that are kind of doing this together and it's interesting to compare notes and see how their communities handle things or what their needs are and so forth and uh so i was uh here interested in the city i did the citizens academy program last year which where i learned a lot about the city there we went through a series of seven or eight weeks where each department of the city gave an overview of what they did and how they did it i was just astounded at the complexity of a small community like this and all the the staff that's here the people the issues that they work on and uh the planning that goes into it so i thought it'd be nice to get a little bit better involved and when i saw the the uh invitation to apply for different groups i thought this would be a good place for me to learn a lot and to maybe contribute some ideas so i'm anxious to see what what the group like this actually does and what kind of contribution we make to the cities looking forward to working with all of you thank you hi i'm nancy swanson and uh i'm in uh the run-up stage to retirement i'll be retiring august 31st and selling my financial services practice to my uh four successors that we've been working together as the swanson group for for two years now so it should be a seamless handoff in in august and in preparation for that chapter change uh i started looking for some civic involvement and this is my first experience in civic involvement but this one really struck a chord with me for a couple of reasons um everybody that i've met in victoria in in my neighborhood since moving here three years ago uh thinks of victoria as their forever home and that that puts a burden of responsibility on this group to actually represent the needs for the seniors and their families and it seemed like a really good opportunity to be a part of that the second reason was that i think of myself as actually living in a focus group i live in reserve on the park which is a small homeowners association of 16 homes and our homes are on a cul-de-sac just like this and the focus group comes into play every second and fourth tuesday of the month when we drag our chairs into the cul-de-sac and bring our beverage and just talk and it's such a wealth of wisdom and people that are so eager to help and to present their ideas and actually to present their body for work if needed and so i think of myself as just a communication pass-through for them and when i was talking to the reporter from the chan hassan uh newspaper he was so intrigued by our cul-de-sac get-togethers that he wanted to know the schedules and he said he's coming [Laughter] and and you all would be invited they'd all be they were so excited uh at my involvement because it felt like it was ad hoc involvement for themselves thank you thank you nancy julie julie hughes um i am actually the property manager of bethesda cornerstone village which is a new residential community um right next door to lions park if you've no um so we opened up in september we're 55 plus and uh i've actually been working with alyssa and we're really trying to so we do we have communities really big for us in in cornerstone but we're also really wanting to be involved in the community of victoria i actually love victoria i live in waconia but um i have fallen in love with victoria since i've worked here it's been a a year actually right now and i just love the community i love the you know like you you made that comment about they live here for life and i think the people who are here are just very passionate about victoria i've never seen anything like it and i i'm excited to be a part of it um and i'm excited for us to be get involved in the community and the things that they have to offer and for you guys to be able to use our facility as well if you need so that's it great hi good morning my name is patrick jones i manage the library just downstairs the victoria library i also manage the chanhassen library for 14 years i ran an outreach department at hennepin county library where we served people who could not use libraries and a majority of those were seniors people who were homebound people nursing homes and people who were in assisted living however had no transportation um and so i have a little bit of background in serving seniors and i'm excited to be here and appreciate the invite now i'm even more excited than i was because this is going to be a great group to work with i think you all will bring so much to the table as we move forward with this group so thank you again for being part of this um the next part of our meeting is just to do i'm going to skip back to this slide in orientation just kind of an overview of how the meeting will be conducted we have this thing called the agenda portal our eye compass i'll be referring to that has a lot of kind of our one-stop shop for meeting related items that i'll show you we'll talk about citizen committee overview and then the open meeting law which will apply so moving forward and again if you have any questions feel free to interrupt no questions asked for me um the first part is the the city of victoria all their city council and citizens committee meetings are broadcasted live and are recorded for on-demand viewing if you did not know uh so just to be aware um that you will be on camera and your microphones will be on they'll pick up those non-verbal cues they'll also pick up any side conversations that you might have so just be aware of that the other thing to be aware of is to speak clearly and directly into your microphone which is up here i know these chairs although they're comfortable they kind of make you want to lean back all the time which is fine but when you do speak just make sure you have your microphone in front of you um and then always assume once you come in here and that on air light is on that the cameras and the microphones are actually hot and there is a meeting being broadcast just an fyi we don't want any unwanted conversations being broadcast to the public so just you know just good practice to remember that when you walk in here your your microphone and your camera might be on so i said these were being broadcasted live and were available on demand how do you find them well the first spot is they are always being broadcasted on mediacom cable channel number eight and then our other options is that agenda portal i mentioned to you they're available live and then for on demand if you missed a meeting you can watch them there as well as on our city youtube channel they're available live and then also on demand so that agenda portal like i said it's that one stop shop for any public meeting related items you'll find our agendas on there for all of our meetings you'll find our meeting minutes you'll see the videos they'll have the calendar for all the meetings and if you don't mind i'll just show you how to access that so if you pull up the city website and it's ci.victoria.mn.us otherwise you can just browse search victoria minnesota if you don't add the minnesota part in there you might get victoria texas or victoria canada it happens to us all the time but once you do find our web page you'll see the city of lakes and parks if you scroll down a little bit here you're going to see this icon for meetings simple just click that and it will bring you to this agenda portal so on the right hand side of the screen you have the schedule of all past and future meetings for the city if you click on one of these dates let's say for us it will bring up our committee meeting today if you click that link that underline there it will bring us the agenda that we have for today and then if we have a video you'll probably see it you can see what we are presenting right now let's say you have a past meeting that you want to look at we do have recent meetings on the left hand side and then if the meeting minutes were published and approved they will also have a button so you can look at those as well there's also a section if you want to just look for a specific type of meeting let's say you're interested in the park and recreation committee you can click on the meetings button up at the top and then you can choose what kind of meeting you specifically want to look for you can also see the members that are part of a committee and then another great feature probably one of my favorites and i use most often is we also have a search capability so you can click the search button up at the top and let's say you're wondering about wasserman if i could spell it correctly wasserman lake park preserve you can type in whatever thing you want on there and it will pull up any time that wasserman lake park preserve was brought up at a meeting so if you're ever interested in just one specific topic you can access that there go back and a few other highlights on our city webpage that might be of interest again ci.victoria.mn.us if you hover over this government tab here you can find our city code if you're ever interested it has our municipal and zoning code standards on there we also have a strategic plan that gets adopted every two to three years council is in the process of adopting a new strategic plan for 2021 and 2023 anticipated to be adopted this month so once that's up there then this strategic plan link will be updated and you can review that through an interactive dashboard which will be pretty cool and then let's say you miss a council meeting or you don't have time to watch every single council meeting twice a month you can click on this council briefs button here something new we're starting is doing snippets of what's going on during a council meeting so you don't have to watch every two hours every two weeks you can check out council briefs and then go through each little topic that was at the meeting and then i said that the meetings are also broadcast on youtube you can go to the city website and check out our youtube icon here we also have for social media uh facebook twitter and instagram if you're ever interested all right back to the presentation part one second all right so before we get started and talking about the citizens committee and kind of what it does i thought i'd do just kind of a brief overview of the city of victoria form of government so just a little background minnesota state statute provides two basic types or abilities for cities to be or form of government so there's what's called a statutory city which uses a city code and then there's a home charter city which uses a local charter to govern for the city of victoria we are known as a statutory city plan b that plan b is a council manager form of government and if we look at this chart here what that means is that the residents get to elect one mayor and then four council members our council gets to make all policy and legislative decisions and then part of that plan b is they get to district the administrative side of government down to a city manager the city manager is then accountable for providing basic city services and conducting city businesses with council direction to the left of that we do have a city attorney it's pretty common for city councils to have a city attorney just there to act as a legal adviser and then if you look to the right of the city manager we have the citizens committee part which is all of you so again many many city councils create committees to make recommendations on specific topics or items to city council for us that would be the oops the senior advising part of the 55 plus community and then sometimes they might be responsible for researching a specific issue and then making a specific recommendation to council when directed for our committee we're known as an advisory committee it's in our name so what that means is that everything that that we work on is council directed and then ultimately any and all decisions will be made by city council if that makes sense awesome so deep diving into the roles and responsibilities of a citizens committee i have three here ambassador to the community we have strategic advising and then development and implementing so the role one that ambassador to the community probably one of the most important as you know advisory committees can really play that key role of expanding city services especially to those that might not be well represented or served in the community by being that ambassador or advocating for a specific group in the committee or the community the committee can really lead beyond city hall walls that not always city staff or city council can go behind or go through and ways they can do that is by being that leadership and reaching out to other sectors they could educate and attract attention to the committee especially since we're new they could educate and promote new programs or expanded programs that the city offers sometimes you know we have programs out there but they just aren't being communicated to the public properly so we need to identify those and try and make sure that our voice is being heard and our programs are being promoted correctly and then um probably one of the biggest ones and nancy you kind of mentioned this in your introduction is listening to the concerns and opinions of your neighbors actually david you mentioned that too of your fellow co or your neighbors and the other residents in victoria and then bringing those concerns back to the committee so they can be addressed so the strategic advising portion of it extremely important as well as it helps city council really map out the city's future although i kind of made a little road map kind of illustration there it also isn't just straight line you got to think outside the box we have to think creatively on ways that we can work through city needs um so we try and look at big pictures we try and assess the strengths and the weaknesses of city programs again trying to make sure that everyone is being served and heard in the city of victoria and then um like i mentioned before the city council is anticipated to adopt a 2021-2023 strategic plan this month that plan will be able to help us generate a work plan for the senior advisory committee and that will be under that will be a discussion for us next month so that will help with that part and then the last one is develop and implementing committees can help with the development of ideas and programs but they can also help implement those programs too if you are interested in being more than just present at the meeting there's a lot more ways you can contribute you can think about what you know are your strengths tap those strengths um examples could be advocating being that ambassador to the community outside of just the committee meetings uh it could be accompanying staff to visits uh it could be helping making introductions it could be speaking to groups you're already affiliated with supporting or volunteering at special events and then most importantly just giving us your time and expertise so again thank you for being here because that's huge and then what are the rewards just to help make victoria a better place for all residents and then provide opportunity for all victoria residents to be successful here and then what is my role that was also on that chart there as staff liaison so each board task force commission committee whatever may have you is assigned a staff liaison to this by the city manager staff liaisons typically are involved either through their job description or they might have extensive knowledge on the functions of the area of a committee or board in my case as assistant to the city manager my role is specific to council-driven projects and incentives i also help with a national night out and partner with the fire relief association with that and our fire chief working on a volunteer program with the city helping aid the citizens survey and then provide opportunities for special events for the city and then on top of that in my past life i actually managed a museum up in richfield minnesota where i specified in 55 plus programming and volunteering so that's kind of a little background on me but what i will do to help the committee is i will provide research and information to help members formulate their recommendation to city council i will help you coordinate and schedule meeting times dates and locations i will help coordinate with the chair on various activities to the committee develop the agenda and collaboration with the chair and then make sure that that agenda and everything else is posted as appropriate along with state requirements and then i'll advise the city manager on the activities of the committee and ensure that what's going on here is communicated properly and since that was kind of a lot of information i would just want to stop here ask if there's any questions before we move on david yeah listen i've been sitting here thinking what does this committee do what are the topics what are the items do we are there kind of action items and there used to be a previous committee similar responsibilities right correct yes maybe tell us a little bit of what they did and what you or the city manager of the folks think that this committee should be working on what are the issues or the topics absolutely good question dave uh so we did have a victoria for the lifetime for lifetime committee which disbanded in 2017 and it was definitely um very similar uh kind of functioned as that senior advisory role things that they did a lot of volunteering programs they helped they had discussions on housing specifically in victoria and senior housing and what that might look like they also worked on kind of a neighborhood packet or a welcome packet for new residents of victoria so it kind of ranged for this committee it will work very similar where um probably we'll be discussing housing we'll probably be looking at what programs we can do whether it's a welcome packet whether it's the national night out events trying to get more people participating in the community but all those will be directed by city council and that will really be kind of worked out at our next meeting with the work plan after the strategic plan is completed and adopted so the city council might say hey senior citizens group we want you to work on these three correct issues yup yup so we're waiting for that and then this is kind of just to get the ball rolling get the orientation and then we can talk about what that work plan might look like and for the year and then the next couple of years so if the city council ever done a community survey they do yes um so we did one in 2018 and uh actually that will be something we'll talk about next week too is kind of going through the data on that it is a little outdated um since it's 2018 but there's some other data sets that i'd like to share with you as well and then um they're planning on doing another community survey in 2022 i believe spring because yeah that's going to be huge and i once that comes around i think there's going to be some discussion on what kind of questions i think that the advisory committee is going to want on that survey because i think there's a lot of data that we might not know until we ask the questions so that's a good point anything else awesome all right and if you think of something again feel free to ask so the next part is the open meeting law so simply stated the open meeting law requires meetings of public bodies to be open to the public um so on the screen i have listed the three basic purposes of the open meeting lot one prohibit the actions prohibit public actions from being made in secret uh two to ensure the public's right to be informed and then three to allow the public for meaningful participation in government and process decision making so then who does this apply to well the open meeting law applies to any governing body that could be a city a town township school districts and then any sub-committee of any of those public bodies so us ourselves including ourselves and then um what this also could or the next question i guess is what is a meeting what constitutes as a meeting the law doesn't actually state exactly what a meeting is but generally the meeting has been ruled as a gathering of a quorum of public body members for us i think we have eight members so a quorum for us would be four so as long as uh three or under that would not constitute as a quorum for over would constitute as a quorum of committee members does the staff get counted in that would you be i do not get counted in that nope right so three of us could go to the open house over in the neighborhood here and listen to the conversation and we're okay technically but that is a good point because there is something called chance or social gatherings that they talk about so um let's say yeah you go to an open house or we all happen to be at lion's pork chop you know dinner or we all happen to be at a hockey game over at the rec center or something um technically that does not constitute open meeting law um however that being said a quorum in a social gathering or under the guise of a social gathering would constitute open meeting law especially if you start talking about committee business so there is that little asterisk there another part is the public perception piece if you know the same three members are always at the same location every week maybe discussing committee business or council business or anything like that of course people are going gonna start to notice and um open meeting law would definitely be questioned yeah so the other one we have on there is serial communication um that's kind of like the game of telephone so i'll just give an example let's say committee member one and committee member two went out to lunch they happen to just mention something about you know official business after the lunch committee member one calls up committee member three and they start talking about the same thing then committee member 3 goes to committee member 4 and starts talking about it as well well that's technically a quorum even though they weren't in the same vicinity the conversation was happening there was discussion so open meeting law would apply there so just as a rule of thumb it's just don't talk about you know decisions or things that need to be made as a committee outside of committee meetings yep oh and then um the digital communications that social or that serial communications doesn't just apply to phone conversations or in person or it also works for letters emails text messages and that's why for all of the agendas or any of the introduction meetings i've or emails i've sent out it's always been blind carbon copied so then nobody can accidentally reply all and then spark possible discussion that would be open meeting law oops oh i started back at the beginning oh nope there we go any questions about that one all right so next on the list is the 2021-2022 meeting calendar i don't have much on this um this is item.4.2 if you look on the agenda this um doesn't require any motion or approval it's just to note more of a discussion so in the background packet you will see that there is the official calendar which is approved annually by city council the senior advisory committee meetings were approved to be held the first monday of the month in 2021 at 10 a.m uh due to holidays city holidays there are two meetings that would be moved it will be july and september to the following wednesday just to note on that and then meetings could be changed or cancelled but will definitely give you all apple time to know about those changes or cancellations and then depending on the pandemic meetings may be virtual any questions concerns thoughts on that all right and then the next part so item 4.3 the selection of the chair and vice chair this here so just before i ask the question um what i'm gonna talk a little bit about what a chair is tasked with so a committee chair is responsible for the facilitation of committee meetings what that is is a making sure that we're abiding robert's rule of order uh making sure that we're asking emotion when required uh keeping the committee on topic and then once or twice a year just presenting um what's going on just like a little simple report to city council a vice chair then would just fill in as acting chair if the actual chair is not present for a meeting so the process of nominating oops sorry nominating a chair and vice chair what i'll do shortly is open the nominations and at that point you can either nominate yourself or another individual to be chair vice chair you can do it from your seats you don't have to stand or go to a podium and then if a person is nominated we will give them opportunity to accept or decline the nomination once we received all nominations all one two three and then close the nomination process and then if we have one nomination we can do a simple motion to approve if we have more than one then we'll do a ballot by roll call so we'll go through each person's name and then they can pick their choice for the chair does that make sense to everybody maybe okay all right so i will open the nominations for the senior advisory committee chair committee members are there any nominations for the chair may i make a comment for sure we have two people here that are three-year members so it would make sense to me as the novice the rookie the one that's here to learn um to go that way so with that said i nominate either sewer dave it is a one two three three the lifers the two of us yeah it's up to you do you want to nominate one of them and we will nominate dave dave you have been nominated for chair do you accept the nomination uh yeah that'd be fine okay all right do we have any additional nominations for chair all right going once twice three times all right i will close the nominations for chair and then i am going to ask for a motion and a second from the committee for the nominee and i do have a recommended motion on the screen if a another committee member would like to make that motion motion to elect committee member dave as chair of the victorious senior advisory committee we have a motion do we have a second i second that motion nancy seconds all in favor say aye aye all opposed same sign all right dave you happen to be the new committee chair we'll go through the same process for the vice chair so i will open the nomination for vice chair do i have any nominations i have a question we're only at 50 capacity and four of our members are gone so both the chair and the vice chair need to be appointed at this meeting without having the opportunity to have met the other people on the committee we usually do it first just when we have somebody being the facilitator yes i'm confused i thought we had a committee of six i thought martha and jack were missing uh but total total we have a committee member of one two three four five six seven eight oh are these guys on the committee oh i didn't realize that i thought they were visiting well i would make a motion that is a passion okay that she would be a good vice chair so i would make a motion for her i'll second well first sue do you accept the nomination to be vice chair i have a question um so chairs and vice chairs are re-appointed every year they are it's a one-year term okay yeah yes i accept them right so we have the nomination for sue bill to be vice chair do we have any other nominations hearing none i will close the nomination process for vice chair do i have a motion to elect a committee chair and again i have a recommended motion on the screen second bullet point are you waiting for a second i'm waiting for a first oh sorry i thought we had that i make a motion to elect committee member sue bill as vice chair of the victoria senior advisory committee i have a motion can can i have a second and dave seconds all in favor say aye all opposed same sign all right motion carries thank you all we do have new chairs um for bill and sue what i'll do is i'll have a script for you so you're not just coming in here blinded i've actually been using a script for that part because there's kind of a lot to go or to remember in that short period so i'll make sure you guys get that before the meetings so moving on to item 5.1 under the other section of our agenda i just have a brief statement here that starting this month i'll be participating in a livability community cohort hosted by elgl or engaging local government leaders the cohort is an eight-week program focused on creating welcoming spaces for people of all um but specifically that 55 plus community is who we're focusing on uh the cohort is also partnered with aarp so they'll be bringing in a lot of data for us for that cohort the opening session for that is april 13th and then during the next few weeks in our next meetings i'll also just do a brief update and ask for your opinion on certain items that the cohort might be questioning so yes does any other committee members have any additional thoughts or anything else i'd like to bring up at some point in time would it be possible that we as a committee i never have been to bethesda but i'm very interested in touring that community because i do know that housing is an issue that comes up and affordable housing or multi you know level housing um is that something we as a committee could do absolutely i'm sure julie that would be all right absolutely we can either set up a time for all of you guys to come or you can call me and set up a tour or we actually are having open houses this month every thursday at 6. it'll be in the paper okay so you'll see that um yeah but if you always welcome people though i love when people come and if you are interested in going as a committee we can definitely set that up and i can get it posted on the city's website that we'll be meeting um i can send an email out today to see if there's a time that we can all make that would be great and julie i'll coordinate with you as well and maybe we can do it during one of the open houses whatever you guys want is fine with me all right awesome i'll start working on that that's a great idea not too often for questions um we talked about the previous work that a previous committee had done a couple years ago and maybe some direction from the council when would we be able to really take good look at that uh yes so um council will be adopting their strategic plan we're anticipating they'll adopt their strategic plan on their april 22nd meeting so coming up very soon um at that point i'll definitely send out what we're thinking for a work plan out to you guys in advance so then you can take a look and then at that upcoming meeting in may then we'll make a final decision on a work plan together speaking of tours maybe patrick week should get a tour of the library as well behind the scenes i'd be happy to do that one time after our meeting awesome thank you patrick thank you would it also possibly be advantageous to have either ann or holly from the park and rec department come because they do offer programs for seniors pickleball exercise you know some virtual stuff or maybe they could identify some gaps absolutely they're looking to maybe gander some support with absolutely yes and i'll write that one down actually i'll write all these down just so then we have a good head start so when we do start thinking of work plan we can talk knowing that we're thinking recreation programs we're thinking housing to see what we're missing and the same thing goes with the library if there's programs that are out there that again if maybe they're there but we're not communicating it with the public properly or maybe it's um that we're missing something there's a gap there that's huge so yep absolutely i had a second question um is there an awareness of what groups within victoria really do outreach to new residents um now when i moved in the lions uh sent me a really nice little or brought over a really nice little poinsettia as a welcome gift to victoria i thought it was excellent i also got a welcome from the city including a coupon from one of the businesses and i thought it's just an awareness that oh they do know i'm here i don't know if we know of any other groups that do that or if this committee would like to look into that we can definitely look into that yeah i do think that's something that is needed actually because i looked around a lot to get um yeah and i actually talked to alyssa and kendra and we tried to there just is there's a little bit of a lacking in that area right now as far as like a welcome packet um i know where i moved like the the folder was so packed you almost couldn't shut it like i think what would be great is you know we have so many local businesses and they're all you know they're not really chains they're more local if we could get something from each one to show what the opportunities are just even in victoria i think that would be really nice i i do there used to be a welcome wagon that did that and that kind of went by the ways side yeah but is it as far as the actual packet would it be better to have something posted on the city website as possible resources um i mean businesses and other resources yeah and another person that we might want to bring in for a specific meeting is our communications manager as julie mentioned kendrick all she is working on kind of rebranding the website so you'll see a lot of well already picture changes and color scheme changes but another thing that she's looking at is what can be on the website that's not included on there we do have a new resident page but i think it can be expanded on and i think this is probably a really good group to identify what should be on there especially because we have some new faces like what would be helpful when you moved in um that we don't have on there i think that's great and of course like we can also explore the idea of doing some sort of actual physical welcome packet but i think the website would be a great addition to that when you say resident page what does that mean is that right i will pull it up you guys have like where um because i you know like the open houses or an activity because our activities are actually open for people in victoria we want people to come i don't know where to let people know that those things are happening except for by putting them in the newspaper you know what i mean i don't know where to put that stuff do you have places one thing i might add is i researched a little bit as to what chad hassan senior senior citizen committee was doing they're focusing one of the things they're focusing on is uh they're doing a an information page on their website for senior citizens having to do with not only um well they because they have a senior citizen center they that takes over a lot of that but for victoria i would think we could now when i go on your victoria site to look for something for senior citizens i'm there i find nothing so that might be we might be able to have a senior citizen page here and this is what's available this is what's going on it could go into a lot of categories yeah absolutely um yeah that's a great idea so again i think bringing kendra in to kind of walk through that and then we can discuss what should be on there because yeah it was actually one of the things resource links and links to other things transportation will be a big one and i and we have resources but i don't think people are as knowledgeable as well as a lot of other things and then you know some links on that page that can evolve as we get going with links to other like you know like at the library when they do the tax assistance you know or open houses or whatever so it can link to a lot of other things that could possibly benefit great idea residents so that new communications page julie i don't want to forget about that if you go to the main page it's under residence and then new resident information definitely should be expanded upon we do have a lot of great information for new residents but of course there's always room to grow so is there like a i don't think there's a facebook page i know there's a next door but is there another option there is a non-affiliated city of victoria facebook group if that's what you're wondering there is that you could not tell you exactly what it's called off the top of my head but i know there's one out there okay interesting okay are there other organizations within the city like bethesda that focus on senior citizens i don't i not that we're aware of really um so and we're you know we're so we're building a lot of these but i think that whenever i talk about this with my board and stuff i talk about how great it is that our first one's in victoria because to be involved in the community is just literally falling in my lap lions club the churches around the um the city everything is just going to be it's going to be great and i think we're going to be able to create a great model but no there's not but i think that that's an opportunity for us to really make a difference you know at least that's our hope are you still building no we're open no but i mean are you adding or are you not here not in victoria okay we our plan is to open 14 in the next five years um three more possibly in minnesota um but this is the first one and it's here okay but you're done with construction oh for cardinals i'm over it wonderful yeah well yeah i think these are a lot of great ideas and i'm really excited to see the strategic plan and when it gets adopted i do anticipate that a lot of what we've mentioned today will fall underneath there so as soon as we can get that work plan up and running then we can start really doing some good awesome if we don't have any other questions or any other items from the committee this morning do we have a motion oh yeah go ahead one more thing i brought something from the city of victoria you know as something that i'll pass out people can be involved in if they want but um some things that we could look at possibly down the fu in the future when we know more it's either um in person or online and their senior commission was involved um it's called aging with gusto and the time of covet and um it just is some sessions that if people want to explain if you want to pick one of these up you're more than welcome to but they're all kind of examples of things we could throw out and i don't know that might come through park and rock but some opportunities um to offer to residents um down the road okay okay thank you wonderful and then i'll make sure that they also get added into the meeting minutes too so to be there thank you so sue you're aware of what other cities are doing is there an organization that where you share best practices or where a city like ken hadeson can say here's our best we do have a group of market cities that we can take a look at and see what they might be doing thanks pat um yeah that we can take a look at there's also the carver county that provides resources they have been focused the health area has been kind of overwhelmed with the kova 19 pandemic but as it starts to slow down whenever that may be i'm sure they would definitely be interested in joining us for a meeting or two or providing us some resources so yeah carver county is a good resource that you know public health and their um aging absolutely we're working on them on employee wellness as well so they're a great organization and actually their director lives in victoria i'm kidding they're not know that in deer run my experience with carver county has been wonderful yeah i've worked with a lot of counties they're wonderful times are different now with covet though you know so it's not going to last forever [Music] i think there's a lot of avenues we can go there's um there's aging in place and a number of my friends are choosing that and so there's a whole um list of things that they need to think about and what they might need to call on or what they might need to prepare for something else that i thought was interesting and i think julie brought this up just it just happened to come up um when i moved um i was caught up in the the market and that influenced my decision to sell but i really hadn't done a lot of preface work or a lot of i didn't do my due diligence is what i didn't do and um i think there might i think this little group that julie talked about and she may want to talk about it on another meeting is really necessary you really need to think about where you're living what you like about where you're living what you might miss what the market is around your surrounding area before you ever make the move to really sell your long time home and i think it's good it would be good insight just to have a little seminar on it or something i wish i would have run across it before i did that but you know everything has worked out fine for me at this point but um it would have been uh food for thought i think that right now there it's it's happening so fast so somebody will come and tour they'll put their house on the market and they're moving in like a month two months later and i think the reason why i had this lunch in there was because it's so fast it's not even they're not even able to emotionally be ready for this big choice that they're making and i think it's been really hard on them not just you several of them right i mean that's what half of our people have done that and i think um having a seminar is a great idea i think that's well it's just you get used to living especially right now where you're living and and the space you have and when you're downsizing that's a huge change and so it's a preparation i think that uh people need to be aware of yep absolutely great point and i know we're we're getting more into the you know what we'll do but there are a lot of resources out there for things like the maa minnesota area agency and aging has a ton of resources they devote a lot of it to aging in place how do you prepare whatever but you know it's the person's an individual needs to go out and search and where do you search for that if you don't have a background in it right um and transportation a lot of people move if you lived in bloomington you move you know to the suburbs and you don't have the transportation resources but you know all those things are available and possibly as we get whatever the city council onset you know they might direct us to look into and make residents aware of some of those resources yep it could be on our little senior citizen website mm-hmm yeah you don't know it you don't know it and you don't know what's out there right right if it was listed if i went into the city uh site hold up senior citizen um you know activities or information it could all be listed and they can choose what they want to do yep absolutely unless i have a budgetary question when the strategic plan is finished and presented will there be budgetary resources that will be assigned to the various strategies they're actually we go through an annual budget process so the annual budget process for 2022 um will start in june and then we'll have those conversations 2021s was started and
