[0:00] In district 191, we like to spark the [0:02] love of learning at a young age. And the [0:04] intention behind it is that every [0:06] teacher is with students and supporting [0:08] them how they need it. [0:09] >> What I want is to really just instill in [0:12] them that school is a fun place. I want [0:14] them to be able to take that to first [0:16] grade along with all those skills. [0:19] [Music] [0:22] We really focus in on giving the [0:26] students what they need. We do a lot of [0:28] assessments that'll tell us where our [0:30] students are and where we need to bring [0:33] them. [0:33] >> It's important that every student gets [0:35] every type of learning environment. So, [0:37] they get that whole group experience [0:38] where they're together in a whole group [0:40] listening to their teacher, learning [0:41] those social skills, but then when they [0:43] break off into those small groups, they [0:45] can focus in on skills that they [0:47] specifically need. So, we can hone in on [0:49] letter sounds, letter names, numbers, [0:51] things like that. My favorite thing is [0:55] room. [0:56] >> Kindergarten in 191 starts out with [0:58] friends entering the building and [1:00] getting to greet their fellow [1:01] classmates. After that, we all have [1:04] breakfast together. After breakfast, we [1:06] meet together and we have a morning [1:09] meeting time where we can share some [1:11] things that are happening during the day [1:13] and really lay a foundation. After [1:15] morning meeting, we usually go into a [1:17] literacy block. [1:18] >> I get to bring a book home. After that, [1:22] usually we will go to lunch, [1:25] have recess, [1:26] >> but my favorite thing in kindergarten is [1:28] to play outside [1:30] >> and then we'll come back and we'll do [1:31] math. And we really focus on laying the [1:34] foundation of math instead of working on [1:38] worksheets. So lots of it is happening [1:41] directly in the classroom in a lot of [1:43] different ways so that they can [1:44] understand it. And then after that they [1:47] get to go to a specialist. So sometimes [1:49] they'll have gym or they could go to [1:52] music or they could go to art. [1:54] >> I just do colors to that. We come back [1:58] have snack and then we'll do a content [2:00] or discovery time. Today we worked on [2:02] science. [2:04] I think every day that the kids are here [2:06] we're sparking interest in learning and [2:08] then the kids spark that here and take [2:10] it with them forward throughout all [2:12] their pathways. [2:13] >> I like my teacher. She gives me hugs. As [2:17] kindergarten teachers, we understand [2:18] that kindergarten is the first big [2:20] letting go. Parents have to let their [2:23] children go and trust the teachers. And [2:25] we have a big responsibility as teachers [2:28] to take care of their kids and to treat [2:30] them like our own and teach them what [2:32] they need to know.
