[0:00] Next up on HCTV's roundt wrestling
[0:03] discussion, we're going to have another
[0:04] conversation with coach Tim Hannenburg
[0:06] as he highlights our girls wrestling
[0:07] program, upcoming tournaments, and their
[0:10] season that's just around the corner.
[0:11] >> After coach Hannenburgg talks about the
[0:13] season, we have uh wrestlers Ellie
[0:16] Lavine and Olivia Lavine, the Lavine
[0:18] sisters jumping in joining us talking
[0:20] about the season as well.
[0:29] Welcome back to HCTV where we have our
[0:32] wrestling roundt discussion. Once again,
[0:34] I'm Kyle Kryer joined by Mitch Sheman,
[0:36] Coach Hannenburg, we're back again.
[0:38] We're going to talk about our girls
[0:39] program. This time,
[0:40] >> an exciting time for Hastings wrestling.
[0:42] Our girls program gets bigger and bigger
[0:44] and bigger every year. U but I want you
[0:46] to give us a quick preview of the
[0:47] upcoming girls wrestling season.
[0:50] >> Go ahead.
[0:50] >> Yeah, as you mentioned, um our girls are
[0:52] one of the leading forces in the entire
[0:54] state, right? So this is our uh fifth
[0:56] year that we've had girls wrestling here
[0:57] u as a it is under the umbrella
[0:59] wrestling but it's kind of a separate
[1:00] entity um as well. So, our fifth year
[1:03] and um like I said, we're one of the
[1:04] leading state uh programs in the entire
[1:06] state, right? So, um last year we had
[1:07] over 35 girls on a team. This year, I
[1:09] really expect us to have over 40 girls.
[1:11] So, um once again, one of the best teams
[1:12] in the state and one of the teams that
[1:13] has the most girls, right? So, um I just
[1:15] always love talking about that as well.
[1:16] And we have a lot of phenomenal coaches
[1:18] that help coach our girls, too. So, um
[1:20] last year we had a really big senior
[1:21] class. Um so, this year we're we're
[1:23] going to fill in with a lot of girls
[1:24] that have been wrestling those two or
[1:25] three years that may not may or may not
[1:26] have gotten their shot at varsity and
[1:28] crack that lineup or section lineup or
[1:30] things like that. So, um, some names
[1:31] that I would just like to start off
[1:32] talking about is our two captains here.
[1:34] We got Ellie Lavine and we got Fiona
[1:36] Myers. Um, so Ellie took fifth place at
[1:37] the state tournament last year. Um, this
[1:39] is only going to be her third year
[1:40] wrestling. So, she picked it up very,
[1:41] very quickly. And, uh, just an
[1:43] absolutely phenomenal athlete. Um, you
[1:44] know, she's played soccer, she wrestles,
[1:46] uh, she can really do it all. So, she's
[1:47] a really phenomenal girl. Our other
[1:49] captain, Fiona Myers, unfortunately,
[1:50] she's going to have to have another knee
[1:52] surgery. Um, so she won't be wrestling
[1:54] this year, but, um, she's recognized as
[1:55] a leader in a room. So, she's a captain
[1:58] and she's just going to be doing a
[1:59] phenomenal job helping all the girls in
[2:00] our room, too. So, a lot of other names
[2:02] I like to highlight on here as well is u
[2:04] the next one, Olivia Lavine. So, Ellie's
[2:06] little sister. Um last year in her first
[2:08] year wrestling, uh she was a state
[2:09] qualifier for us. And one of the things
[2:11] that I love talking about Olivia with is
[2:13] uh she's got a nasty cradle. She's got a
[2:15] phenomenal cradle and loves to pin
[2:16] girls. She had about 27 pins on the
[2:18] varsity team last year in her first year
[2:20] wrestling. So, really cool about that.
[2:22] And um just really came out of nowhere
[2:23] at the girls section tournament,
[2:24] qualified for the state. Um, and I
[2:27] didn't have this written down, but one
[2:28] thing I I would love to talk about her
[2:29] though, too, is um, you know, she, a lot
[2:31] of people have goals at the state
[2:32] tournament, right? They they, you know,
[2:33] I want to do this. I want to win a
[2:34] match. I want to place. All that kind of
[2:35] stuff, right? Her goal was she wanted to
[2:37] walk off the mat every single time with
[2:39] a smile on her face. She just wanted to
[2:40] be not happy that she was there and
[2:42] content that she was there, but she
[2:43] wanted to enjoy the moment and just
[2:44] savor every single second she was able
[2:46] to wrestle at the state tournament. So,
[2:47] I just love that about her and she's a
[2:49] phenomenal young girl, right? And then
[2:50] we have a bunch of other younger girls
[2:51] that are going to be breaking up uh into
[2:53] our lineup this year. And some started
[2:54] last year and some didn't, but um Lane
[2:56] Robinson and Sammy um Allen, both girls
[2:58] that are entering their sophomore or
[2:59] their freshman year, I should say. Um
[3:01] they started off wrestling last year for
[3:02] the first year, wrestled at our section
[3:04] tournament. Um just great girls that are
[3:06] very, very good athletes and um ready to
[3:08] do some big things. Cara Peler, once
[3:09] again, a girl that wrestled in our
[3:10] section tournament last year. She's
[3:12] entering her second year wrestling.
[3:13] Comes from a wrestling family. She's
[3:15] going to do some really, really good
[3:16] things this year, too. a girl that's a
[3:18] absolutely phenomenal athlete, Audriana
[3:20] Dolberg. Last year was her first year
[3:21] wrestling and she had some really really
[3:23] great great wins. Um absolutely
[3:25] phenomenal athlete. Super powerful. Um
[3:27] doesn't know all the rules and the hair
[3:28] is flying and the and the fur is flying
[3:30] sometimes out there on the mat, but she
[3:32] does really really well
[3:33] >> and she goes all out. It is absolutely
[3:36] it's it's so much fun to watch um
[3:38] because you you watch her and maybe not
[3:41] exactly know every single little piece
[3:43] of technique, right? But no matter what
[3:45] she's doing, she's going all and
[3:49] battle when you're out there with her.
[3:50] For sure.
[3:52] >> Yeah. Another girl I really like to
[3:53] highlight too is Lily Watts. She uh
[3:54] started wrestling about two or three
[3:56] years ago. Um it's just an absolute
[3:57] rockolid person in the middle of our
[3:59] lineup. Um she's been really close to
[4:00] making it to the state tournament the
[4:02] last couple years and I really expect
[4:03] that she's going to break through to the
[4:04] state tournament this year. Um one last
[4:06] girl too is a very familiar last name,
[4:08] Lavine, right? Avery Lavine. We got a
[4:10] bunch of them in our lineup this year.
[4:11] Uh she is holding up our upper weights.
[4:13] She's only an eighth grader right now
[4:14] and she had a phenomenal season last
[4:16] year, took third at the section
[4:17] tournament. Um, and I expect once again
[4:19] someone that's really going to have a
[4:20] phenomenal season. So,
[4:21] >> and that was a name that I circled cuz
[4:22] we obviously coach her at the middle
[4:24] school
[4:25] >> and she is a stunt athlete. I mean,
[4:27] every sport she does, whether it's
[4:28] softball, volleyball, wrestling,
[4:30] >> she excels in. And she's just got this
[4:33] right mentality. She's tougher than
[4:34] nails. She's had to basically survive
[4:36] with two older sisters, right?
[4:38] >> Um,
[4:39] >> one thing I would like to say about her
[4:40] too, sorry to interrupt, but um,
[4:41] absolutely phenomenal leader too, you
[4:42] know. Um, as someone that's in eighth
[4:44] grade, you really don't expect someone
[4:45] like that to be that good of a leader. I
[4:47] got to watch her do uh play volleyball
[4:48] this year like you're saying, and she is
[4:50] very vocal. She knows how to coach these
[4:52] girls up. She gets everybody in the
[4:53] right position. She cheers them on. So,
[4:55] someone that's a very vocal and loud
[4:57] leader and um just also leads by example
[4:59] as well. So, once again, some rare
[5:00] qualities to have as an eighth grader.
[5:02] So, really cool.
[5:02] >> And it's cool to see that the
[5:03] positivity, right? You don't always have
[5:05] to be a leader by by screaming at your
[5:07] your teammates. And when when you look
[5:08] at your lineup and you looked at the
[5:09] girls that you were talking about, um
[5:11] the mentality, that mindset that they
[5:14] have, it it's so so fun to watch and and
[5:17] so fun to watch grow together cuz we got
[5:20] a lot of the younger girls coming in um
[5:22] that are going to be stepping up like
[5:23] you mentioned in those big spots, but
[5:25] >> you know, you watch the the girls
[5:27] compete together and it's it's just
[5:29] something different and they they really
[5:30] are out there to to wrestle for each
[5:32] other. It's fun.
[5:32] >> Once again, boys and girls wrestling,
[5:34] many similarities. Uh couple things are
[5:36] a little different, right? Like you
[5:37] said, those girls follow each other
[5:38] around to every single mat and they are
[5:40] loud. They cheer each other on. They're
[5:41] super supportive. Uh they just love
[5:43] being there for their friends, right? So
[5:44] these duels get really, really loud.
[5:46] Like um I'll tell you what, we went to
[5:48] the unofficial and we'll talk about
[5:49] probably in a second, but the unofficial
[5:51] dual state tournament last year was at
[5:52] St. Michael. That was one of the loudest
[5:54] events I've ever been to. When you get
[5:55] 16 girls teams that are all cheering for
[5:57] each other, it was an absolute blast.
[5:58] And and actually one of the main
[5:59] officials in the state, Rod Frost, said
[6:01] that was probably his favorite event
[6:02] he's ever repped in his entire life. So
[6:04] it was just a just really cool event.
[6:06] you know, obviously and um it's
[6:07] recognized by not only the fans, not
[6:09] only the wrestlers, parents and and
[6:11] officials as well. So, pretty cool.
[6:12] >> So, I want to interrupt a little bit
[6:13] there. You said you lost all these
[6:15] seniors, you had good numbers. Do you
[6:17] guys expect to have a full lineup this
[6:18] year?
[6:18] >> Oh, yeah. Um I I can see is um filling
[6:20] in all the weight classes. Not sure
[6:22] exactly who's going to be where yet, but
[6:23] I'll see a couple newer girls, a couple
[6:25] girls I didn't mention maybe as well.
[6:26] So, one girl that um is probably going
[6:28] to jump into our lineup is Diana Kelly.
[6:30] So, she's been doing a great job the
[6:31] last couple years wrestling and someone
[6:32] who's been behind some of those good
[6:34] girls and older girls like Allison
[6:35] Weinettle and these kind of girls. She's
[6:37] someone that's going to jump in there
[6:38] and do a really really great job for us.
[6:39] Very explosive wrestler and really
[6:41] coming on with wrestling. Um I would say
[6:42] another good girl too that's going to
[6:44] come on this year probably is Mattie
[6:45] Berg. Um she's been wrestling a couple
[6:46] years. She wrestled with you guys at the
[6:47] middle school. She wrestled with us last
[6:49] year in seventh grade. So an eighth
[6:50] grade girl that is very physical, very
[6:52] tall. Um loves wrestling and she's going
[6:54] to do a really great job for us.
[6:55] >> Yeah. Once she jumped on the mat as as a
[6:57] fifth grader, it was it was like hook,
[6:59] line, sinker, and she just really
[7:00] enjoyed it and wanted to learn more,
[7:02] right? She she wanted to be taught the
[7:03] different techniques. And again, that's
[7:05] that's that work ethic that I think the
[7:07] girls in in in our Hastings wrestling
[7:09] program really have is they have that
[7:11] drive.
[7:11] >> Well, I agree. Y
[7:12] >> one thing you talked about the
[7:13] unofficial state tournament. Any other
[7:15] dual meets that we should look forward
[7:16] to?
[7:17] >> I know that one thing that we are gonna
[7:19] broadcast this year is that Forest Lake,
[7:21] correct?
[7:21] >> Yep. So Forest Lake won the unofficial
[7:23] dual state tournament last year and they
[7:24] had a really good lineup. Um un
[7:26] unfortunately we didn't get to wrestle
[7:27] them last year, right? We lost to Apple
[7:28] Valley in the semi-finals. Apple Valley
[7:30] lost to them. So I really would have
[7:32] liked to wrestle them last year. Just
[7:33] didn't happen, right? So that's going to
[7:34] be a huge one as well. U with the girls
[7:36] duels, it's a little harder to to plan
[7:38] around, right? Um some teams, they have
[7:39] girls, but they just don't have a full
[7:41] lineup. So they really shy away from the
[7:42] girls duels more and we go to a lot of
[7:44] indiv indiv individual tournaments. Um
[7:46] so we have a lot of those going on,
[7:48] those tournaments um throughout the
[7:49] state. I'll say one huge one is at the
[7:51] Pine Island. That's kind of a ramping up
[7:52] for the state tournament as well. That's
[7:54] at the end of the year. Uh huge numbers
[7:55] at that one. One of the first premier
[7:57] tournaments that popped up in the state
[7:58] of Minnesota for the girls. Uh so that's
[8:00] one that girls always like going down to
[8:02] and um doing that as well. And I would
[8:03] say the other one too, just like to plug
[8:05] the unofficial dual state tournament. 16
[8:07] teams last year. I think there was
[8:08] probably one team that didn't have a
[8:10] close to full lineup. Everybody else
[8:12] maybe missing one or two ways here and
[8:13] there, but for the most part 16 teams
[8:15] that are putting together an almost full
[8:16] lineup, and it was very, very legit. We
[8:18] end up taking third last year and I
[8:19] could see us being top five this year,
[8:21] too. So, we're going to put a good
[8:22] lineup together this year,
[8:23] >> too. And we lost that that semi-final
[8:25] match by one. It was so close. The the
[8:27] gap that we went from the duel to that
[8:29] that state tournament was so much fun.
[8:31] Um, now the Pine Island one is going to
[8:33] be fun to watch because it's about two
[8:35] weeks right before that, right? I think
[8:36] it's right in the middle of January. Um,
[8:38] another one that I had circled on
[8:40] circled on paper is the South St. Paul
[8:42] matchup because I think they have a they
[8:43] have a solid team. Again, one of the top
[8:45] teams in the in the state. Um I'm
[8:48] looking forward to that one and that one
[8:49] kind of kicks off right away in in
[8:50] December.
[8:50] >> Yeah, that's pretty quickly quick there
[8:52] too. And um yeah, South St. Paul's got a
[8:54] really good girls team, one of the best
[8:55] in the state as well. Um in the last
[8:57] couple years they've been in our
[8:58] section. Pretty cool. This year, just to
[8:59] preview it as well. Uh so our girls
[9:01] section used to be two sections
[9:02] combined, right? So last year we were
[9:04] section three and four. This year we're
[9:06] going to be uh section three alone. So
[9:08] um it's going to take two girls still to
[9:09] the state tournament, which means it's
[9:11] going to expand from eight girls to 16
[9:13] girls. And one really cool thing I want
[9:14] to just talk about for the state
[9:15] tournament and this is both the boys and
[9:16] the girls. Um but then now the state
[9:18] tournament is going to be double
[9:19] elimination for both the boys and the
[9:21] girls. So this is something coaches have
[9:22] been uh fighting for for you know 30
[9:24] plus years and u yeah so it happened
[9:26] this year. It's got expanded by another
[9:28] half a day. Uh so now both the boys and
[9:30] girls are going to be both 16 person
[9:31] brackets double elimination for
[9:33] everybody. So it's going to be a really
[9:34] phenomenal experience for everybody. And
[9:35] once again I can see us sending I would
[9:37] say last year if it was uh just our
[9:38] section we could probably send almost
[9:40] every single girl to the state
[9:41] tournament last year. That's how good we
[9:42] were. And this year, I think we're gonna
[9:43] be sending a ton of girls to the state
[9:44] tournament as well.
[9:45] >> Shannber, I know we could sit here and
[9:46] talk about wrestling all day long. We
[9:48] really could. But as much as they want
[9:50] to hear us talk, we really want to hear
[9:51] our wrestlers talk. So, we're gonna be
[9:53] right back with some of our female
[9:54] wrestlers, some of our captains. They're
[9:56] going to talk about their season. Coach
[9:57] Hannber, thanks again for your time. We
[9:59] wish you nothing but the best this
[10:00] season.
[10:00] >> Awesome. Thanks, guys.
[10:07] >> But here is the difference for the class
[10:09] of 1990.
[10:11] We went from high to
[10:14] >> I know you're all excited about Y2K. You
[10:16] could lose power or party like it's 1999
[10:19] High School graduating
[10:22] the first
[10:30] class of 2020.

[10:55] >> Get a pin.
[10:57] >> What a move. WHAT A GOAL. OH, what a
[10:59] shot. Scores the Raiders. Can they get
[11:02] the lip? Yes, they do.
[11:05] just snipes one.
[11:07] >> Oh my god.
[11:09] And reaching up and making the play.
[11:14] >> IT'S OVER.
[11:15] >> LOOKING TO throw and she's going to get
[11:17] the first down. Gone. Touchdown Raiders.
[11:25] The
[11:26] >> United Heroes League mainly uses sports
[11:28] as a bridge to help military families
[11:30] stay active and engaged in their
[11:31] communities. We have over 40
[11:33] professional teams that partner with us
[11:35] for free tickets and camps. We provide
[11:37] access to free sporting equipment.
[11:39] >> UHL has provided us with a lot of
[11:41] equipment and a lot of gear that is
[11:43] otherwise sometimes hard to attain.
[11:45] >> It's really cool. I get all this free
[11:47] stuff and it's because of my great dad
[11:50] who is a veteran.
[11:52] >> UHL has been a great supporter not just
[11:55] for our family but for all the military
[11:57] families.
[11:59] We're excited to see what the future
[12:01] holds. We can't wait to see where it
[12:02] goes.
[12:10] Welcome back to HCTV's roundt wrestling
[12:13] discussion. We're here with two of the
[12:16] girls captains, girls wrestlers I should
[12:18] say. We're here by with Ellie Lavine and
[12:20] Olivia Lavine. And I want to give them a
[12:22] quick little introduction before they
[12:24] talk. We're going to start off with
[12:25] Ellie, one of our senior captains. Uh
[12:27] Ellie is a returning state qualifier,
[12:29] state place winner, sixth at state, not
[12:31] fifth. Like coach Hannenburg said, this
[12:33] is her third year wrestling. And uh
[12:35] we're expecting big things from her this
[12:37] year. Welcome to the show, Ellie.
[12:39] Awesome. And then we have Olivia Lavine.
[12:41] Olivia is a second year wrestler. In her
[12:43] first year, she was a state qualifier.
[12:46] Uh definitely, I think, surpassed your
[12:48] expectations of the season.
[12:50] >> Welcome to the show.
[12:51] >> Thank you.
[12:51] >> It was a Last year was awesome. I mean,
[12:53] even even watching I I watched the uh
[12:56] had it on the big screen at the state
[12:58] tournament. It was so much fun to watch
[12:59] the two of you just going at it. Um
[13:01] representing Hastings wrestling. It was
[13:03] that was cool.
[13:04] >> And before we start talking about
[13:05] wrestling, I want to congratulate both
[13:06] of you girls. Uh both members of our
[13:09] section final soccer team, the first
[13:11] time in school history. That's a big
[13:13] deal. So, I just want to congratulate
[13:14] you guys because um from having a
[13:16] daughter that plays soccer, like they
[13:17] look up to you guys big time. So,
[13:19] congratulations to both of you guys.
[13:20] >> But we're not here to talk about soccer.
[13:22] We're here to talk about wrestling. So,
[13:23] if you guys could give us a quick
[13:25] rundown of like what you're looking
[13:26] forward to this year with wrestling. Um
[13:28] may maybe it's individual goals or team
[13:31] goals. Anything you want to talk about
[13:33] with this upcoming season that you're
[13:34] looking forward to?
[13:35] >> Okay. Uh do you want to start?
[13:37] >> Yeah. I think um as a team I think that
[13:40] last year for the girls state um
[13:42] tournament we we had an upset. We
[13:45] definitely were right on Apple Valley's
[13:47] tail for team state and
[13:50] >> um I think they definitely should watch
[13:52] their backs this year. Like we've
[13:53] definitely lost some some key girls on
[13:56] our team this last year. We graduated
[13:59] >> Allison and Amelia and Kan all girls who
[14:03] were like for sure wins. Like that's how
[14:05] we looked at them as. And so
[14:07] >> it's going to be tough filling in that
[14:09] that spot, but I feel like we can
[14:11] definitely do that this year. And then
[14:12] for you individually, like what are some
[14:14] of your goals that you have for this
[14:15] year?
[14:16] >> Um, there are definitely higher
[14:18] expectations this year, like making it
[14:19] to stay and everything, having it be my
[14:21] second year. So, like personally, I just
[14:22] think making it back there again and
[14:25] just finishing farther than I did last
[14:27] year.
[14:28] >> Yeah, for sure. That's awesome.
[14:29] >> Now, now you got that now you got that
[14:31] stepping stone, right? Now you got a
[14:33] starting spot and and you shoot higher.
[14:34] That that's that's awesome.
[14:35] >> And the unfortunate thing about doing so
[14:37] well is you can't hide from girls this
[14:38] year, right? Because
[14:39] >> you're not sneaking off.
[14:40] >> Yeah. You're not going to sneak You're
[14:41] not going to sneak up on people this
[14:42] year, right?
[14:43] >> George reminds me of that.
[14:45] >> I love it. Go ahead.
[14:46] >> Uh, I would say for the team going on a
[14:49] different note than Ellie, we are
[14:51] gaining so many middle school girls.
[14:53] Like last year, we brought so many
[14:55] middle school girls up, including our
[14:57] sister Avery.
[14:59] >> Third place at sections at for sections
[15:02] first or Oh, that's my phone. Okay. But
[15:06] it's just crazy like we have so many
[15:08] first year girls who came out. They're
[15:11] so strong. We got wrestlers like um
[15:14] Kira,
[15:16] uh Sammy, Leighton, and we just know
[15:19] they're going to be so good this year.
[15:21] And it's so exciting cuz obviously we
[15:23] had such a good team last year, but I
[15:25] just know we're going to do we're going
[15:27] to do so good this year.
[15:28] >> It's Yeah, it's fun when when you have
[15:30] the numbers in the in the room, right,
[15:31] where you can just kind of reload. And I
[15:34] I mentioned this with coach Hannenburg.
[15:36] It's so much fun to to watch the girls
[15:38] really grow together and build together,
[15:40] but um when you've been in there, now
[15:42] you've been in this is your second year.
[15:43] I mean, think about how much you grew in
[15:45] that first year
[15:46] >> and now how much it's going to go in in
[15:48] year two and you're going to have girls
[15:50] in that same spot too. Um talking even
[15:52] Mattie Berg is going to be in there.
[15:54] Avery is going to be in there. It's it's
[15:55] going to be it's going to be fun to
[15:56] watch.
[15:57] >> One thing I'm always kind of interested
[15:58] in learning about is kind of like your
[15:59] wrestling journey. Like how did you get
[16:01] here? And I know a lot of you guys in
[16:02] your family started a little bit later,
[16:04] but if you guys could talk about kind of
[16:05] your wrestling background, even though
[16:07] you weren't wrestling early on, you were
[16:10] around wrestling and you're from a
[16:11] family of wrestlers. You guys could talk
[16:13] about that a little bit, that'd be
[16:14] great.
[16:14] >> Okay. So, my mom's side, we I think a
[16:18] couple weeks after we were born, we were
[16:20] at the tournaments while we were at
[16:22] there. Uh
[16:23] >> I can attest to that. I saw you
[16:26] >> as a baby at a wrestling tournament. we
[16:28] participated in um showcases and we
[16:32] would wear our leotards and we would be
[16:34] out on that mat and just having so much
[16:36] fun. And for me uh going into my first
[16:40] year, I didn't even think I was going to
[16:42] wrestle. I had I didn't think I was
[16:44] going to. And I remember I think a
[16:47] couple days before captain's practices
[16:49] started, I was like, "Mom, please sign
[16:52] me up. Like, I'm ready. I think I think
[16:54] I want to do this." And she's like,
[16:56] "Okay, give it a And I was like, I think
[16:58] I'm I think I'm going to love it. And
[17:00] and I did. And I really do love it. And
[17:02] I think it's just it's crazy to start
[17:06] something and just find out you're good
[17:08] at something and just to give it your
[17:09] all. So
[17:10] >> take a risk like that, too. That's
[17:11] impressive.
[17:12] >> Yeah. Did you have a sister in your ear,
[17:13] too?
[17:13] >> Pop. I think I think we got a spot for
[17:15] you, right?
[17:18] >> Um Yeah. Kind of what Olivia said. Like
[17:21] we were babies when we went to our
[17:24] uncle's wrestling tournaments and
[17:26] everything like that. We just get p
[17:27] passed around, handed around. My mom's
[17:29] like, "I got to watch this match." Like
[17:31] she hand us off. Everyone would just
[17:32] like hang out with us. I have a picture
[17:34] of me on my grandma's lap just with head
[17:36] gear on. And I don't know, it's just
[17:38] like we were definitely introduced to it
[17:39] at a young age. And I feel like George
[17:42] coming into our lives the way he did.
[17:43] And he he started um coaching when it
[17:47] was my second year. So my first year he
[17:49] was just kind of around. He helped out,
[17:51] everything like that. But then my second
[17:52] year he was like, "All right, if we're
[17:54] going to do this, we're really we're
[17:55] really going to do this." It's like I'll
[17:56] I'll come in and I'll coach, but we're
[17:58] really doing this. And I was like, I'm
[17:59] all for it. I don't think there was
[18:01] >> a match I had where he wasn't on my
[18:02] corner.
[18:03] >> You know, I got I got to ask that I got
[18:05] to ask this question. So, uh we're
[18:06] talking about George Lo, who was a a
[18:08] twotime state champ for
[18:10] >> same um so we won't go that far. I mean,
[18:13] wrestled in college. Uh but I mean, when
[18:16] he came into the room,
[18:17] >> right, did the how did how did that
[18:20] change the room as a dynamic? I mean,
[18:22] cuz he's going to be he's going to be a
[18:24] guy that's going to work hard. you're
[18:25] gonna he's going to push you to that
[18:27] next level. How how did it how did it
[18:28] go?
[18:29] >> He is more of a quiet guy. Like it takes
[18:31] him a little bit to
[18:32] >> to get to know people. He'll he's a
[18:34] little quiet at first. We kind of just
[18:36] sits he just kind of sat back and just
[18:38] spectated for a little bit. Just kind of
[18:41] see like he was just viewing like how
[18:43] everybody works and
[18:44] >> like if people weren't putting in the
[18:46] effort, he wasn't going to waste his
[18:47] time to go like not not to be rude, but
[18:49] he wasn't going to waste his time to go
[18:50] and
[18:50] >> put in all that effort to try and help
[18:52] them if they weren't going to try. So he
[18:54] kind of just started off by figuring out
[18:56] who really like seems like they want to
[18:58] put in the effort and do the best they
[19:00] can. And then he really started to get
[19:02] into it. He'd do the drills with
[19:03] Hannenburg. He'd show new moves. Um the
[19:06] girls and guys are switching on on and
[19:08] off practices. That's what we did last
[19:09] year. And so he wasn't able to make it
[19:12] to all the later practices because those
[19:14] are or all the early practices because
[19:16] he'd always only be able to come to the
[19:17] later ones. So, um, when we had the
[19:20] earlier practices, he'd come in once a
[19:22] week and just show random like few
[19:24] moves, one or two moves for whoever
[19:26] wanted to stay after for a little bit
[19:28] while the guys were warming up and
[19:30] >> he just try and get in all that extra
[19:32] work to whoever was like,
[19:36] >> right, has that drive, wants to win. And
[19:38] I think that was a big big thing that
[19:40] um, Coach Hannenburg did having George
[19:42] in that room. Now he's got the three of
[19:44] you in there, too.
[19:45] >> Um, which is pretty cool. I do got to
[19:47] tell a little story. I got to embarrass
[19:49] you guys a little bit.
[19:50] >> Sorry, I had to. So, you guys already
[19:52] know this, but our fans might not know.
[19:54] I actually coached your uncles my first
[19:56] year teaching in Rosemont.
[19:57] >> Oh, really?
[19:58] >> You didn't know that?
[19:58] >> I did not know that.
[19:59] >> Yeah. So, that's why I said I remember
[20:01] you as a baby. Your mom was literally on
[20:03] Matt's side screaming. Does that sound
[20:04] like your mom?
[20:04] >> That sounds
[20:05] >> Yeah. Sorry, Sammy. Cheering them on.
[20:07] And it's pretty cool because it's kind
[20:09] of come full circle and now you guys are
[20:11] wrestling, right? Um and your mom was
[20:13] actually a wrestling manager, too. So,
[20:14] it's pretty cool, right, to kind of pay
[20:16] it forward. And now you guys are kind of
[20:17] taking the reigns. So, all right. I'm
[20:19] going to jump shifts a little bit. Okay.
[20:20] >> Is that all right?
[20:21] >> Yeah. Go for it.
[20:21] >> We talked about your soccer season. We
[20:23] talked about how both of you are multi
[20:24] multiple sport athletes. How have other
[20:27] sports helped you guys in the sport of
[20:29] wrestling? And I know that a lot of the
[20:31] girls that wrestle are multiport
[20:33] athletes. So, if you guys want to touch
[20:34] on that a little bit, either one of you
[20:35] can answer that. Um, I think just in
[20:38] like a mindset kind of way, like it
[20:41] switching from a team sport aspect to
[20:44] going to an individual sport like
[20:46] wrestling where it's it's all on you on
[20:48] the mat basically. I mean, there's the
[20:50] team duels and everything, but it's
[20:52] still a lot of it's on you. And I feel
[20:54] like I just
[20:57] >> going from a team sport like soccer
[20:58] where
[20:59] >> like you're as strong as your weakest
[21:01] link. You guys all have to work together
[21:03] in order to get to the spot you want to
[21:05] be at. I feel like um going to wrestling
[21:08] I loved it a lot more because I was able
[21:11] to see what I put in.
[21:13] >> Yeah.
[21:14] >> And see what came out of it. And I feel
[21:16] like that was
[21:18] >> that's just like the biggest difference
[21:19] I've seen from it. But like from an
[21:21] athletic point, soccer, you're running
[21:23] for 25 minutes and like like for me, I'd
[21:27] run 25 minutes the first half, come out,
[21:29] get a quick sip of water, go back in for
[21:32] the rest of the
[21:32] >> Yeah. You can't do that during a
[21:33] wrestling match, right? like, "Oh, I
[21:34] want a water break."
[21:35] >> I mean, some girls try to get away with
[21:37] that. Some girls try to get away with
[21:39] that, but I just feel like soccer, it's
[21:42] just straight conditioning. And so,
[21:44] you're kind of
[21:45] >> So, you're well conditioned going into
[21:46] this year already.
[21:48] >> Gosh.
[21:48] >> Yeah.
[21:48] >> Awesome.
[21:49] >> Yeah.
[21:50] >> Lily, anything you want to add about
[21:51] that? Otherwise, we can move on to the
[21:52] next question.
[21:53] >> I definitely would agree with Ellie. I
[21:55] think it's it's like refreshing to go
[21:58] like going off my first year. Like it's
[22:00] refreshing to go from a team sport to
[22:03] more of an individual, still a team
[22:05] sport, but it's it's really great to see
[22:07] the work that you like do at the end of
[22:09] practice. Like again, George, like he
[22:12] encouraged sprints at the end of
[22:14] practice. He encouraged like another
[22:17] round of live at the end of practice.
[22:19] And it's just crazy how you can see like
[22:22] all the extra things you're doing. It
[22:23] pays off in matches so much.
[22:25] >> That's awesome.
[22:25] >> For sure.
[22:26] >> Yeah.
[22:26] >> And and now that looking at the the
[22:28] program as a whole, okay, I want to
[22:30] shift gears away from different sports.
[22:32] Um I want to look at the program as a
[22:34] whole because you two are huge links
[22:35] now, right? And you're drawing girls in,
[22:38] you know, into the sport, into the
[22:40] program of Hastings. What have you you
[22:43] two because I I I've heard about it,
[22:45] right? I I kind of know um got that
[22:47] backward background knowledge, but what
[22:49] what have you two done do you think that
[22:51] really pulls girls into that room that
[22:53] recruits the younger girls right now? Um
[22:55] what are you doing right now?
[22:57] Well, for me, I've been like I've took a
[23:00] couple trips to the middle school for
[23:02] like other clubs that I'm in and always
[23:04] always like I will share that I'm a
[23:06] wrestler and like we do like little
[23:07] introductions, but
[23:09] >> it's just like I feel like seeing an
[23:11] older girl be a part of wrestling is
[23:13] like a male-dominated sport. It's it's
[23:16] really cool to just see that. And
[23:18] >> I just I tell them like you may just try
[23:21] it like you may love it. So, I just
[23:23] always like tell people I'm a wrestler
[23:26] and yeah,
[23:28] >> I feel like at practices um Fiona's not
[23:30] here, but she's another captain and um
[23:33] her and I I feel like we just like at
[23:34] soccer practice especially, we'll be
[23:36] talking about it. We um into into our
[23:39] warm-ups for soccer. We just like we did
[23:41] this like backpedaling thing. We just
[23:43] put that into our warm-ups for some
[23:44] reason. And her and I are like down in
[23:46] our stance like it's just like it's just
[23:48] like a natural thing and and people
[23:50] would like say something about it. And
[23:51] then Fion and I would like talk about
[23:52] practice all the time and just like
[23:55] >> I feel like a lot of people think about
[23:56] like the negatives like oh it's so hard
[23:58] oh cutting weight and I
[23:59] >> and Fion and I will we just always be
[24:02] talking about like the fun we have and
[24:03] like
[24:04] >> like the good that comes out of it and I
[24:06] feel like not a lot of people think
[24:07] about that. So, I think it's important
[24:08] to just talk about it like out in the
[24:11] open just around other people so they
[24:13] can hear that like it's really not as
[24:15] bad as it seems. Like it definitely has
[24:17] its downers, but
[24:18] >> you guys are also being a part of that
[24:19] that Monday nights you guys are going
[24:21] into practice showing technique.
[24:23] >> Um we we have that um for even the
[24:26] showcase they have that showcase twoe
[24:28] deal just getting wrestlers like you
[24:30] jumping into the room girls like oh my
[24:32] god I can do this right. So just having
[24:34] those role models and then I I think
[24:36] that's awesome.
[24:36] >> And to piggy back off what Olivia said,
[24:38] I think it's really hard for girls to
[24:40] get that first step in the in the room.
[24:41] They're so apprehensive like I don't
[24:43] know if I should touch a girl this way
[24:44] or if I should even be aggressive and
[24:46] mean. That's not how we're supposed to
[24:47] be. And it's like it's accepted, right?
[24:49] It's it's something that you guys have
[24:51] excelled in. And I think I I got to give
[24:53] you both a lot of credit. You've been
[24:54] leaders for those young ladies. And I
[24:56] think a lot of girls are willing to put
[24:57] themselves out there because of the
[24:59] things that you guys have done. So it's
[25:00] a big credit to you guys.
[25:01] >> Yeah. No. And like in the summer too,
[25:03] we've got the girls camp that we have
[25:05] like just for a big group of girls. And
[25:08] >> um Hannibburg has us all showing drills
[25:10] and
[25:11] >> like in the beginning of it, he'll be
[25:12] like, "Oh, this is Ellie. This is like
[25:14] just introducing all of us and all the
[25:17] girls like all the little girls look so
[25:18] excited and they're just like, "Wow."
[25:20] It's just so
[25:21] >> Yeah. Remember, you're celebrities.
[25:22] >> You are, right?
[25:24] >> Yeah. Absolutely. Ladies, I want to
[25:26] thank you so much for your time and I
[25:27] want to wish you the best of luck this
[25:29] season. We'll be covering a lot of your
[25:30] matches this year. Um, but we really
[25:32] appreciate you taking the time to do
[25:33] this.
