[0:17] Welcome everyone to Strangely Local, a [0:20] Hastings Community TV original series. I [0:23] am your host, Alec Mat. [0:26] Ever wondered what it would be like to [0:28] go [0:30] back in time to a place where there was [0:33] no automobiles, no television, and no [0:36] internet. Well, high schooler Amanda [0:40] Delaney was willing to share with us her [0:42] experience in the year [0:45] 1853. [0:47] So, you were working on a paper for [0:49] history class, right? [0:51] >> Yeah. On the city of Hastings. [0:53] >> Uh, what was it about? [0:55] >> Well, it was about the year 1853 when [0:58] the city was named. Um me and my [1:00] friends, we went to the library to [1:02] gather stuff to do our research. And um [1:05] when when we were studying, we all [1:07] started to talk about what it might be [1:09] like to live in the 1800s. Late last [1:11] Friday, I was working on my paper. And I [1:15] kind of lost track of the time and I [1:17] started to get really tired. The last [1:20] thing I saw before I closed my eyes was [1:22] a photo of Henry Hastings Sibling, [1:26] >> Minnesota's first governor. Mhm. Yeah. [1:29] So, I woke up to a cool breeze and the [1:32] sound of birds chirping outside. I [1:35] wasn't in my bedroom anymore. I was in [1:38] the woods somewhere, sitting beside a [1:41] tree, and I was wearing this tattered [1:43] silk dress. I wandered around trying to [1:46] find somebody. Eventually, I saw a [1:49] cottage and met some people. I asked if [1:53] I was in Hastings, but they didn't know [1:55] what I meant by that. One of the women [1:56] asked as in Henry Hastings sibling. I [2:00] needed to sit down after that. [2:02] >> I would do the same. [2:04] >> So yeah, a lady came up to me. She [2:08] introduced herself as Sarah Jane Steel [2:10] Sibly, Henry's siblings second wife. She [2:14] told me that her husband was riding to [2:16] the other side of town to meet the [2:17] Bailey's Alexis and Henry and Alexander [2:21] Farabo. I asked if it were possible to [2:24] find a means of travel to where they [2:26] would be leading, but the only option [2:28] was one of the horses. I have never been [2:31] horseback riding before, so I was a [2:33] little nervous, but it seemed like it [2:35] was the only way. If [2:36] >> only Uber existed back then. [2:39] >> Anyways, I was flung to the ground and [2:42] it just ran away. Luckily, I was not [2:44] hurt. So, a few minutes later, a man [2:47] rode by. And get this, it was Henry [2:50] Sibi. [2:52] I went up to him and I mentioned that I [2:54] knew his wife Sarah and where I was [2:56] trying to go. He gave me a lift to his [2:59] meeting. On the way there, he said to me [3:02] that they were going to decide a name [3:04] for the city after drawing from a hat. [3:07] Apparently, I asked if Hastings was one [3:09] of the names, and he said no. But he did [3:12] like my suggestion. [3:14] Later, when all four of them got [3:16] together, they drew from the hat and [3:18] Hastings was chosen to be the city's [3:20] name. Mr. Sibi looked at me and then I [3:23] started feeling really lightaded. I shut [3:26] my eyes and um when I opened them, I was [3:30] back in my room. At first, I just [3:32] thought it was a dream, but get this. [3:35] When I looked at the page in the history [3:37] book, it mentioned that the name [3:39] Hastings was a suggestion made to him by [3:42] a girl that he brought with him. [3:44] >> Wow. Did you get an A? [3:46] >> It was actually an A+. [3:47] >> Well, congratulations and thanks for [3:50] sharing it with us, Amanda. And you have [3:52] a great day now. [3:53] >> Yeah, you too.
