[0:19] We are at Highview, and my name is Isaac. [0:21] Let's go find some teachersand students to interview. [0:27] So, Ms. Emerson, [0:27] what does academic readiness mean to you? [0:29] - Academic readiness meansthat we have the foundation [0:33] and the building blocks to be ready [0:35] to start to learn new things. [0:37] - Ms. Emerson, can you show us something [0:39] that engages your students in learning? [0:41] - Isaac, this is our Number Corner. [0:43] It's super engaging for our kids. [0:45] It's part of our Bridges math [0:46] that's new for the district this year, [0:48] and what the kids love is that [0:50] there's a pattern they get to discover. [0:53] - So, Shae, what does it feel like [0:54] to finally understand something [0:56] that was actually really,really hard at first? [0:58] - I feel accomplished. [1:00] Like, division is somethingthat was tough for me at first, [1:03] but after I learned some morestrategies with my teachers, [1:06] it became a lot easier. [1:08] - What skills have youlearned from your teachers? [1:10] - That asking for helpis never a bad thing [1:12] and that advocating for what you need [1:14] is always a good thing. [1:15] - What does academicreadiness look like to you? [1:18] - Academic readiness to memeans being prepared for class, [1:21] wanting to go to class, [1:22] and just being open-minded to, like, [1:23] what comes next in that classand wanting to participate. [1:26] - What do you guys wantto be when you grow up? [1:28] - A president. [1:30] - A lawyer or a judge. [1:32] - Grace, what is somethingyou are learning right now [1:35] that will help you become a president? [1:37] - I mean, my teacher puts on this thing [1:39] called "World From A to Z," [1:41] so it, like, helps me understand, like, [1:43] what's happening in this world, [1:44] not just happening in the school [1:46] or in the city of Lakeville. [1:48] - Well, to help with, like,be a lawyer or a judge, [1:51] we do a lot of organizationskills and time management. [1:56] - What does academicreadiness look like for you? [1:58] - It's more than justcontent knowledge, right? [2:00] Like, it's more than just knowing [2:02] what you have to do in your class, [2:03] but it's also developing the understanding [2:06] that we're all human beings [2:07] and it's okay to struggle with things. [2:09] It's about how yourespond and how you react [2:11] to adverse situations thatreally set you up for success. [2:14] - How about you show us around your office [2:16] and show us what engages your students? [2:18] - The one guy I'll point tohere is my optimistic onion. [2:28] - As a teacher, how do youget your students ready [2:30] for life after high school? [2:31] - I try to really focus on morethan just math in my class, [2:34] so I just try to give themsome communication skills, [2:36] some confidence, [2:37] so that they can be successfulin my class and beyond. [2:40] - Why is academicreadiness important to you? [2:43] - I feel like it's important to me [2:44] because it's important tomy students' future success. [2:47] They have to have those pieces in place, [2:49] and they have to have thatmaturity and readiness [2:52] just to carry them into their future [2:53] and give them as many options as possible. [2:55] - Okay, Ms. Hedin, canyou show us something [2:57] that students are working on this year? [2:59] - Right now we are, spoileralert for your class, [3:02] working on linear and absolutevalue inequality graphing. [3:07] Won't that be fun? [3:08] - Yeah. [3:09] - So, Ms. Hermanstorfer, [3:10] what has you excited for the school year? [3:12] - Everything, all capital letters. [3:15] - Why is academic readiness important? [3:18] - I think academic readinessfor all of us is important [3:22] because it helps us bebetter human beings. [3:28] What are you most excited about [3:30] for this school year here at Highview? [3:33] - What I'm most excited about, probably, [3:35] is to make new friends. [3:37] I already have a lot of friends, [3:39] but I guarantee there'ssomebody in this school [3:43] that probably doesn't have a friend [3:44] who probably needs one, [3:45] so I'll be there to help them. [3:47] - That is exciting. [3:48] You are one fantastic human being. [3:50] High five.
