[0:07] my name is Brit Elson with the Lakeville [0:08] fire department here with another [0:09] Lakeville fire safety minute today we're [0:11] talking about ice safety in the early [0:14] part of the Season whether you're [0:15] preparing for a hopeful season of ice [0:17] fishing or getting those uh holding pond [0:20] hockey rinks up and running want to make [0:21] sure you stay safe and dry on the ice it [0:25] requires about 4 in of clear ice that's [0:28] new ice not snowmelt ice [0:30] for you to walk and Fish on the ice uh [0:33] then you need about 5 to 8 in of clear [0:35] ice if you're going to use a snowmobile [0:37] ATV uh 9 to 12 in of clear ice will [0:40] support a small siiz car and then if [0:43] you're going to drive your truck out on [0:44] the ice you need 13 to 17 in of clear [0:47] Ice uh another thing to keep in mind on [0:49] the ice the ice is seldom the same [0:51] thickness throughout you have things [0:53] like underwater currents streams [0:55] Wastewater feeds from the runoff that [0:58] may impact the ice thck so you may have [1:01] 12 in in one spot but another spot may [1:03] only be 3 in so make sure you're [1:04] cautious as you're traversing the [1:06] ice another thing to consider early in [1:09] the season we have a lot of temperature [1:10] swings that affect the Ice uh we get ice [1:12] melt and refreeze that'll impact kind of [1:15] the strength of that ice now the last [1:17] thing we want to talk about is holding [1:18] ponds in the neighborhoods I know these [1:20] are popular for ice skating and uh pick [1:23] up hockey games uh we want to make sure [1:25] that we're keeping cautious of the water [1:27] inlets and Outlets to those ponds as the [1:29] ice around there may be thinner and not [1:30] support the weight that the rest of the [1:32] ice does ice safety is your [1:33] responsibility we just want to check the [1:35] thickness before we go out and make sure [1:36] we've got enough clear ice to support [1:38] what we're doing on the ice if you have [1:40] any questions the DNR has a great ice [1:43] safety page you can reference you can [1:45] call us at the fire department 952 [1:49] 985-4700 and if you have any emergencies [1:51] obviously call 911 if somebody you're [1:53] with does fall through the ice want to [1:56] remember reach throw and go if you can [1:59] reach them safely from the shore try to [2:01] get them out if you can't throw them a [2:03] rope or jumper cables or a log to help [2:06] them climb out and if you can't help [2:08] them yourself go call 911 get help on [2:10] the way time is imperative when you're [2:12] exposed to cold water
