[0:07] [Music] [0:14] When you consider what the passages of [0:16] time have done to the city of Lakeville, [0:19] the one constant has been the landscape [0:21] and the lake that was central to its [0:23] establishment. In 1853, JJ Brackett [0:28] settled on the southshores of Prairie [0:30] Lake, which is later renamed Lake [0:32] Marian. Brackett likely considered this [0:34] lake as crucial to his survival and [0:37] prosperity, providing food, water, and a [0:42] means of transportation. Lake Marian has [0:44] since been a central feature and a [0:47] bellweather to the Lakeville community, [0:50] reflecting the area's environment and [0:53] its changes over time. [0:56] The 1930s were the worst drought years [1:00] in United States history, and it also [1:03] coincided with the Great Depression. [1:06] Changes in oceanic and atmospheric [1:08] patterns led to a prolonged dry [1:11] conditions with rainfall dropping to [1:13] record lows. The drought, which lasted [1:16] from 1930 to 1936, [1:19] compounded the difficulties faced by [1:21] Lakeville's agricultural community. Low [1:24] commodity prices and crop failures due [1:26] to the drought caused significant [1:28] financial hardship for local farmers and [1:31] related businesses. During this period, [1:34] Lake Marion shrank dramatically, as [1:36] evidenced by this 1937 aerial photo [1:40] showing the lake reduced to a small [1:42] pond. The drought turned many Minnesota [1:45] farm fields to dust and transformed [1:48] small lakes into muddy ponds with the [1:50] peak of the drought in 1936, setting [1:53] heat records that still stand today. We [1:57] are standing here on the point of [1:59] Caspersonson Park. In the 1930s, the [2:03] lake levels were so low that a road [2:05] extended from here where we're standing [2:07] at Caspersonson Park all the way across [2:11] to the east side of the lake. At that [2:14] point in time, there were very few [2:15] houses on Lake Marian. On the southshore [2:19] was Waxobomb's Resort and Antlers Park. [2:22] The lake was so dry that the northern [2:25] bay that we are looking at here was [2:28] totally dry. There are rumors that the [2:31] farmers even bailed hay for their [2:33] animals out there. [2:36] Minnesota experienced dramatic shifts in [2:38] weather in 1938 and 1939 with unusually [2:42] high precipitation during the dry years. [2:45] Increased moisture left flows from the [2:47] Gulf of Mexico and more frequent storm [2:50] systems brought much needed rainfall to [2:52] the region. In 1936, Minnesota received [2:56] only 18.6 6 in of precipitation. [3:00] But by 1938, this had increased to 27.3 [3:05] in, aiding in the recovery of the [3:08] agricultural industry and improving [3:11] living standards. Lake Marian's water [3:13] levels mirrored these changes. It [3:16] reached its highest point in 1929 and [3:18] then dropped 14 ft by 1937. Rainfall and [3:24] snow events in 1938 and 1939 resulted in [3:28] a 12 foot increase in water levels in [3:32] less than 2 years. Lake Marian has [3:36] experienced significant fluctuations in [3:38] water levels over the decades. After the [3:41] 1930s drought, levels dropped again [3:44] briefly from 1961 to 1964, again [3:49] approaching record lows. but it [3:52] rebounded soon after. [3:54] The 1960s to 1980s also saw increased [3:59] housing development along the shoreline [4:01] with more and more houses and cabins [4:04] being built. In 1984, near record high [4:07] lake levels threatened the homes which [4:10] had recently been built. When the lake [4:12] is high, the deep water outlets for the [4:15] lake can cause downstream flooding, [4:18] particularly in the Lakeville Business [4:21] District. To address these significant [4:24] water level fluctuations, the city of [4:26] Lakeville and state agencies have [4:28] implemented various water management [4:30] controls. The city requires state [4:33] permits to manage Lake Marian's water [4:35] outlets, ensuring that water levels are [4:38] regulated to prevent flooding and [4:40] environmental degradation. Lakeville's [4:43] water resources management plan [4:45] emphasizes protecting and enhancing [4:47] surface water quality, managing storm [4:50] water, and using natural retention ponds [4:53] to manage and to improve water quality. [4:57] Regulations such as improving no wake [5:00] boating regulations when water levels [5:02] exceed certain levels can help minimize [5:05] shoreline erosion and property damage [5:07] during these high water events. Lake [5:10] Marian's history reflects the resilience [5:13] and adaptability of the Lakeville [5:15] community. Through proactive management [5:18] and community engagement, Lake Marian [5:20] continues to serve as a natural asset [5:23] and a bellweather for Lakeville's [5:26] well-being.
