Lakeville schools tackle two board vacancies before November
The Lakeville Area School Board met on August 11 to address two urgent staffing gaps: finding a replacement for Kim Baker on an intermediate district board and filling a vacancy on their own board before the November election.
The board faces pressure to act quickly on both fronts. For the 917 intermediate district board — which serves higher-need students across multiple school districts — Kim Baker's departure leaves the Lakeville board without representation. Board members discussed several options, including asking Baker to continue temporarily, inviting a former board member to take the role, or having Baker brief the board on the position's responsibilities at a future meeting.
Board member Tony Reimringer proposed inviting Baker to explain what issues the 917 board typically addresses, helping the board make an informed decision about her replacement. Board Chair emphasized that the ideal candidate should have a passion for special education, given the 917 board's focus on serving students with higher learning needs. The board agreed to gather more information about the role and circulate it before their next meeting, with a decision expected then.
The second vacancy on the Lakeville board itself requires action before newly elected members take office in January. According to Terry Morrow, the state may demand an appointment if the board doesn't make a genuine effort to fill the seat. Board member Matt Swanson suggested appointing the highest vote-getter from November's election who isn't already on the board — a proposal he said he supported previously.
The board decided on a "good faith effort" approach: the Chair and Vice-Chair will contact recent former board members to gauge interest in serving temporarily until the new members are seated. Board members acknowledged that any interim appointment would be brief, lasting only until January when the newly elected board members take their seats. The board will continue discussing both vacancies at upcoming meetings as they work toward filling these positions.

Would it be possible um for our next meeting um cuz I'm I'm going to guess this is still going to be a topic at our next meeting. Um, if we could reach out to Kim and have her come just basically to talk about um, what is usually discussed at those meetings, what issues are of particular importance to 917...
I mean, it's it's nice if it's a board member, existing board member so they can report back with any updates without having to arrange scheduling, so.
I think a lot of the work is similar to our district and you know following a budget and um different student population in terms of the the district serves some of our higher need students in terms of learning and um and so I think that was where someone who has a passion for special education uh really is a good fit for that.
I think I voiced last time I was I was in support of Tony's idea of just appointing, you know, the highest vote getter who's not currently on the board, you know, come November's election.
I think if we kind of consider the appointment piece and um raise some ideas and gauge the interest that is a good faith effort of kind of moving forward with it and then if we get to a certain point where it doesn't really then we can decide, are we going to appoint?
