[0:03] Hello, I'm Kathy Kina, the Dakota County [0:06] Attorney. One of the responsibilities of [0:08] the Dakota County Attorney's Office is [0:11] to prosecute all levels of crime [0:13] committed by juveniles in Dakota County. [0:16] As part of that responsibility, we offer [0:18] several different youth accountability [0:20] programs, also known as diversion [0:23] programs, as an alternative to charging [0:26] a juvenile and bringing them into court. [0:28] These programs are available to [0:30] firsttime offenders who are alleged to [0:32] have committed low-level crimes such as [0:35] property offenses, disorderly conduct, [0:38] or alcohol or cannabis offenses. So the [0:41] goals of these programs is to promote [0:44] public safety and reduce juvenile [0:46] delinquency, to build skills to prevent [0:50] future delinquent behavior, and to [0:53] promote rehabilitation while still [0:56] holding a juvenile accountable for their [0:58] acts. These programs have certain [1:01] requirements that must be met, including [1:04] counseling, attending educational [1:06] classes, performing community work [1:09] service, and paying restitution if any. [1:12] Upon successful completion, charges will [1:15] not be filed, and the child avoids [1:18] having a juvenile delinquency record.
