So uh this [9:24] where we we love to get it started here [9:25] in middle school so when they get to [9:27] high school they have a really good [9:28] taste of it. Um we actually everybody [9:30] did try it uh in in rehearsal. Um these [9:34] are the kids that volunteered to do it. [9:35] So everybody, it's open to anybody that [9:37] that wants to do a solo. Um and uh so [9:40] the ones you're hearing tonight are the [9:41] ones that volunteered, but we actually [9:43] everybody has a chance in jazz band to [9:45] do that during rehearsals. It's super [9:47] important. That's what jazz is. So um [9:50] the next tune we're going to play is [9:51] Nutcracker Nutcracker Swing. Uh [9:55] super familiar tune, especially around [9:57] this time of year. Um we get lots of [9:59] Nutcracker valleys going on all over the [10:01] place. Uh they meet twice a [15:49] week for about 25 minutes and we try to [15:52] get as much done as we can in that 25 [15:54] minutes. Um and so what you're hearing [15:57] is is a result of their hard work, a [15:59] little probably extra time outside uh [16:02] making sure their parts are ready and [16:03] things like that. But uh that's when we [16:05] do meet that's that's when these groups [16:07] come together. They're open to every kid [16:10] every student in our school for eighth [16:11] grade band. Uh we totally encourage [16:14] every kid to sign up. These are the kids [16:16] that have so far. We open those up as we [16:19] uh start the next half of the year. Um [16:21] and so if you'd like to see your uh your [16:24] child up here, it'd be great if you want [16:26] to keep encouraging to try to join one [16:28] of these groups because um that extra [16:31] playing that they get makes a huge makes [16:33] just it's more time on the point. So and [16:35] more time playing uh percussion and [16:37] things like that. It makes a huge [16:38] difference in just overall um seeing [16:41] more music. Moscow 1941 [39:15] was commissioned by the Perry High Perry [39:18] Hall Middle School band and dedicated to [39:21] Larry Bonder, a music teacher who has [39:23] been influencing the lives of music [39:24] students over his lifetime. Mr. Bonder [39:27] is of Russian descent, so it seemed [39:29] fitting that the piece be based on one [39:31] of Russian's most famous songs, [39:33] Medallands. [39:35] The song Medal of [39:38] the Song Medallands identifies with an [39:40] extremely important moment in history [39:42] during the Second World War in which the [39:44] Red Army against all odds successfully [39:46] defended Moscow against the German [39:48] invasion. In 19 uh in October 1941, [39:51] German troops were only 15 miles outside [39:53] of Moscow. An unfavorable situation for [39:56] the Soviet Union. Two pe two million [39:58] people had evacuated Moscow, but Ysef [40:00] Stalin stayed to rally around. [40:03] In November, the Germans launched an [40:05] attack on Moscow. The Soviet army held [40:07] their ground and brought the Germans to [40:08] a halt. Stalin insisted on a [40:10] counterattack and although his [40:11] commanders had doubts, they launched [40:13] their own defense on December 4th. The [40:15] Germans, caught off guard and [40:16] demoralized by their recent defeat, were [40:18] pushed back and began retreating. His [57:00] music has been performed by groups [57:01] ranging from professional symphony [57:03] orchestras to elementary schools in [57:05] venues such as Carnegie Hall, the [57:07] Kennedy Center, Sydney Opera House, [57:09] Toronto Center for the Arts, and many [57:11] more. [57:13] As a conductor, Mr. Bulmage enjoys [57:15] regular engagements with all state bands [57:17] and orchestras, as well as university [57:20] and professional groups throughout the [57:21] world. Now, [57:24] in Brian Bulridge's own words, he [57:26] writes, "That is hard for me to describe [57:29] how much fun I had working on this [57:30] piece. I have long been fascinated with [57:33] the intersection of pop music styles and [57:35] the traditional concert band. This [57:37] version combines some of my own original [57:40] music material with Ukrainian bell carol [57:43] and hints of three kings, all set in a [57:46] heavy metal style. [57:49] Homages continues while highly [57:50] accessible. I wrote this at home for [57:52] high school, colleges, community, and [57:54] even professional groups. Ironically, [57:56] this is the first piece I wrote after [57:58] completing a 30inut symphony for bands. [58:00] I guess I need to release some tension, [58:02] and the holiday season was only about 6 [58:04] weeks late.
