Albert Lea Council Approves Fire Engine Purchase, Arena Alarm System
The Albert Lea City Council approved the purchase of a new fire engine and authorized installation of a fire alarm system at the city arena during their regular meeting Monday.
The council approved spending $860,880 for a Pierce Enforcer HDR engine from Pierce Manufacturing, with an additional $89,199 for equipment, keeping the total under the $950,000 budget. The new engine will replace a 1999 fire truck and is expected for delivery in January 2026.
Council members also authorized $125,340 for a new fire alarm system at the city arena, accepting bids from Custom Alarm for $85,340 and Albert Lea Electric for up to $40,000 in conduit work. The Recreation Department received a 90-day occupancy certificate in October and wants the system installed before that temporary certification expires.
In ceremonial business, the council witnessed the swearing-in of Detective Mary Gaul and Detective Luke Tuzinski, who were promoted within the Albert Lea Police Department. The council also recognized graduates of the 2025 Citizens Academy, a nine-week program that provides residents insight into police department operations.
The council approved several street reconstruction assessments following public hearings, including projects on neighborhood improvement areas, state aid streets, and 11th Street reconstruction. During one public hearing, resident William O'Connor successfully appealed a lawn maintenance assessment, citing medical circumstances that prevented him from completing yard work before city contractors arrived.
