[0:00] - Hello, my name's Leon Chambers.
[0:01] I'm with the Bloomington Fire Department.
[0:03] Today we're gonna talk
about forcible entry
[0:05] and why it's important.
[0:06] (upbeat music)
[0:17] There's many reasons why
we need to force a door.
[0:19] If a patient's on the ground
[0:21] and they can't make it to the door
[0:23] and they're having a medical
emergency, it's important
[0:25] that we have quick and speedy process
[0:27] where we can get inside
[0:28] and give that person medical attention
[0:30] as quick as possible.
[0:31] First thing that I like to do
[0:32] as a firefighter is I
wanna size up the door
[0:35] because I want to know if the door
[0:37] is an inward swinging door
or outward swinging door.
[0:39] We know if it's the hinge side,
[0:41] it's an outward swinging door.
[0:42] If it's a non hinge side,
it's an inward swinging door.
[0:44] We're gonna try to find the softest way
[0:47] to get inside the home first.
[0:49] First, we're gonna check windows.
[0:50] We wanna protect life,
[0:52] but we also wanna protect the property.
[0:54] If there is no other option
to get inside the door,
[0:56] brings us back to step one is
we're gonna size up this door.
[0:59] (object banging)
[1:00] The first thing he's gonna do
[1:01] is he's gonna gap the door.
[1:02] He's gonna take his adsan
[1:04] and he's gonna put it in
between the wedge of the door.
[1:08] So the second thing he's
gonna do is he's gonna set,
[1:09] but he's still gonna
get a little bit bigger
[1:11] of a purchase point
[1:12] so that he can take his
wedge in his pocket.
[1:14] That way we capture our progress.
[1:15] He's captured his progress,
[1:17] just like that, we made entry.
[1:20] Stand right here for a few seconds.
[1:21] Give our forecast meter
an opportunity to catch up
[1:24] to the new environment that it's in
[1:27] so they can tell us whether or not
[1:28] there's carbon monoxide involved.
[1:29] Most of the times, people in a fire,
[1:32] they tend to pass out or
faint in front of the door
[1:36] or within six to eight feet of the door.
[1:39] I'm gonna sweep to the
side, both of my sides.
[1:43] If it's a fire, my partner's gonna have
[1:44] the nozzle charged and ready to go.
[1:45] And once he makes entry,
I'm gonna feed him hose
[1:48] until I'm comfortable
with the amount of hose
[1:51] that we have inside the home.
[1:52] And I'm gonna bump up to the firefighter
[1:53] to assist in putting out the fire.
[1:55] To wrap things up, I'm
firefighter Chambers,
[1:57] and this is why forcible
injury is important.
[2:00] We gotta make sure that
we get inside the home
[2:02] as quick as possible.
[2:03] We gotta make sure that we train,
[2:04] so that comes second nature to us.
[2:06] And just gotta make sure we
stay on top of our skills.
