Hello Bloomington Public Schools community. I'm school board Chair Tom Bennett and I'm Superintendent Dr. Eric Melby. Here are the highlights from the June 22nd schoolboard meeting. We approved the operating budget for the 202627 school year, something we do every June. The approved budget includes a late in the school year change to the plans to expand walk areas as a cost-saving measure. We're pleased to share that student walk areas will remain unchanged next school year. >> Yeah, it's really good news. We were able to do this because the Minnesota legislature took action to allow school districts to use operating capital revenue for utility service costs. We believe this change will cover the savings target without increasing walk areas. I want to thank our parents, caregivers, staff, and community members who shared feedback about the impact that change would have made. As a district, we have a responsibility to identify savings. So, we were pleased to have this less disruptive option become available and allow the district to choose a path that shields students and families from a significant change. The board also approved a new registration and payment platform for community education and early learning classes and programs. As the new platform rolls out, families may see some changes and be prompted to create a new account when registering. >> Finally, we heard a report about the Grow Your Own Grant Program. Since its beginning in 2022, this program has helped 17 BPS staff members, mostly of diverse backgrounds, go back to college to earn a teaching license. This year, we celebrated our very first participant who graduated with a teaching degree. With two years left in the grant, the final round of candidates to enter the program was interviewed this spring, and we can't wait to celebrate their success. This program is so important and supports our goal of lifting up all of our amazing workforce and quality educators. Yes, it's a great program. And so that's all for our June 22nd meeting recap. There are no schoolboard meetings scheduled in July. The next regular schoolboard meeting is August 10th. Until then, we wish you a safe and relaxing summer.
