[0:01] - Looking at bloodroot today, [0:02] it's what's known as a spring ephemeral. [0:04] Spring ephemerals are plants that come out [0:07] before leaf out on all the trees. [0:09] Being that when the leaves come out, there's full shade [0:12] and not as many resources for them to grow, [0:14] so they take advantage of that. [0:15] They flower early, and we're fortunate enough [0:17] to see them before the rest of the world turns green [0:20] for the summer. Bloodroot gets its name [0:22] because when it's damaged, it emits an orange like sap. [0:25] Historically, it would've been used to dye clothing. [0:29] Bloom time for the bloodroots is early April to mid-May. [0:32] If you're an early riser. [0:33] If you come out in the woods, you might see the [0:35] bloodroot closed up. [0:36] As the day goes on, it will open up [0:38] and overnight it will close again. [0:40] It will bloom for multiple days opening [0:42] and closing in the evenings. [0:43] Bloodroot can be found throughout Bloomington. [0:45] It prefers woody areas. [0:47] River bottoms are a really good place in the upland areas, [0:50] especially areas that have been restored [0:51] and are more open, have more available sunlight. [0:54] Central Park has a lot of good spots for Bloodroot as well. [0:57] If you do venture into these areas to look for it, [1:00] please tread lightly and watch out for other plants [1:02] that might be in the area. [1:03] Try not to disturb it too much.
