Fire Department showcases life-saving cardiac equipment capabilities

He explained that every fire engine in Bloomington carries both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) equipment — medical gear that allows firefighters to provide immediate, life-saving care to patients experiencing cardiac emergencies and other medical crises.
Whalen highlighted two key tools that enable this rapid response. The Life Pack 15 is a cardiac monitor that allows paramedics to assess heart rhythms and deliver treatment on scene. The iSimulate system is a training tool used at fire stations to help paramedics practice responding to cardiac emergencies, ensuring they stay sharp and ready for real-world situations.

[0:01] I'm a fire captain and a
paramedic with Bloomington Fire,
[0:04] and I just wanted to let you know
[0:06] that we're more than just fire,
[0:07] we also do EMS as well.

[0:22] All our fire engines are equipped with BLS
[0:24] and ALS Equipment.
[0:25] BLS is basic life support,
[0:27] and ALS is advanced life support,
[0:29] so we're able to manage
patients and get on scene
[0:31] before the ambulance
[0:33] and take care of lifesaving emergencies.
[0:34] What I'm gonna show you
today is our cardiac monitor.
[0:38] Usually we bring our cardiac
monitors on scenes with us
[0:41] when we have a patient that's
having a cardiac emergency
[0:43] or someone that is unconscious
[0:46] or in need of CPR.
[0:47] We have our monitor here.
[0:48] It's a Life pack 15,
[0:50] and we're able to connect patients to it,
[0:52] check their blood pressure,
check their oxygen levels,
[0:55] and perform a 12 lead EKG.
[0:57] And we also have our, iSimulate here,
[0:59] which allows us to practice in station.
[1:02] With our iPad,
[1:03] we're able to send rhythms to our monitor
[1:05] and we're able to simulate
if someone is having
[1:07] a cardiac emergency and
we're able to treat them.
[1:10] And that's how we practice
[1:11] and get more hands on in
stations with our crews.
[1:13] While we're doing that too,
[1:15] we're able to get a blood
pressure on the patient.
[1:19] We connect our 12 leads on the chest
[1:22] and see what the heart's doing.
[1:23] So it's important for us
to have this equipment
[1:25] because it takes us four to
five minutes to get on scene,
[1:27] and typically we get there
before the ambulance.
[1:30] So having our cardiac monitor
[1:31] and being able to recognize
what's going on with the patient
[1:34] and treat them before the
ambulance is very important,
[1:36] and that's why we keep this
equipment on our fire engines.
