Bloomington advances health center project with community input
The Bloomington City Council heard updates Wednesday on the Community Health and Wellness Center, a major project that will be shaped by what residents say they want. Staff presented preliminary designs and survey results showing strong demand for amenities like indoor pools and running tracks.
The Community Health and Wellness Center, part of the city's Bloomington Forward Initiative, is moving into a more detailed design phase. Staff and consultants told the council they are balancing three competing priorities: creating a thoughtfully designed facility, engaging extensively with the community, and keeping costs under control. Preliminary site plans and building diagrams were presented, though work continues to refine the layout, manage the budget, and address constraints at the Creekside site.
A statistically valid survey of residents provided clear guidance on what the center should include. Indoor aquatics and running tracks topped the list of desired amenities, while residents also expressed interest in special events and environmental education programming. The survey also found that residents make heavy use of parks throughout Bloomington and frequently visit the Mall of America for indoor recreation—data that will inform what the new center offers.
In other business, the council hosted 16 Ukrainian students participating in the YOULEAD program (Youth Leadership Engagement and Development), marking the third consecutive year Bloomington has welcomed the group. City staff gave the students an in-depth look at local government operations, strategic planning, and community engagement. The program aims to equip young leaders with skills they can apply to rebuilding efforts in Ukraine after the war. Students toured Civic Plaza and learned about projects like the Nine Mile Creek Corridor, which was highlighted as a model for public participation in development.
A community celebration related to the health center project is scheduled for September 28 at Creekside, offering residents another chance to weigh in on the project's direction.
