Bloomington residents will soon vote on whether to keep or eliminate ranked choice voting for mayoral and city council elections. The City Council approved the specific wording that will appear on the ballot, moving forward a petition drive launched by voters seeking to overturn the voting method that was initially approved four years ago. The city clerk verified that the petition contained sufficient signatures to warrant the ballot measure.

Ranked choice voting allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference rather than selecting just one. If no candidate wins a majority of first-choice votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and those votes are redistributed based on voters' second choices, continuing until someone reaches 50 percent. The system was adopted in 2020 but has faced ongoing debate about its complexity and implementation.

Beyond the voting measure, the council also highlighted two community initiatives. The "Bloom in Bloomington" internship program completed its second year, placing 15 young people ages 16 to 24 in paid positions with partners including the Mall of America and local employers. Participants reported significant personal growth and new career insights from the experience.

The city also celebrated the success of an Older Adult Job Fair held at Creekside Community Center, which drew more than 200 attendees. The event, organized in partnership with Martin Luther Senior Living in Care and Ebenezer Senior Living, connected local businesses with older adults and retirees interested in part-time and seasonal work opportunities. The initiative reflects the city's effort to support employment across all age groups in the community.
