Bloomington Announces Juneteenth Celebration June 21
The City of Bloomington will host its annual Juneteenth celebration Saturday, June 21, from 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Valley View Middle School Field, located at 8900 Portland Avenue.
Chadwick Niles Phillips, speaking for the city, announced the event will feature live performances by None Above Known, Step with Soul Unstoppable Dance Company and Brother A, with music provided by DJ Phoenix. The celebration will also include dance instruction through the Boots on the Ground program, led by Tina Jackson.
The event will feature a Vendor Village showcasing community organizations and small businesses, along with food trucks and activities for children. Free haircuts will be available, and organizers plan to distribute $10 food tickets and other items while supplies last.
Juneteenth commemorates the moment when emancipation became reality for African-Americans across the United States, according to Phillips. He described the holiday as marking a meaningful step forward in the ongoing journey toward justice and equality while honoring the strength, culture and contributions of the Black community.
The celebration aims to bring together community members to observe what Phillips called a very important holiday focused on liberation, culture and community.
