Bloomington Names New Planning Manager, Recognizes Former City Manager
The city of Bloomington announced the promotion of Nick Johnson to planning manager, effective the week of Feb. 3, according to a recent city update.
Johnson will succeed Glenn Margard, the current planning manager who is retiring after nearly 30 years of service. Johnson has served as a member of the city's planning division since 2015, most recently as planning supervisor. He has led several key initiatives including development and implementation of the city's comprehensive plan, district and small area plans, and updates to the city's zoning code.
Separately, the city recognized former City Manager Jamie Vugi with a proclamation at the Jan. 6 council meeting. Vugi served as city manager for 10 years before leaving to become president and CEO of Catholic Charities Twin Cities. Under his leadership, the city reimagined the South Loop through development and creative placemaking, made investments in affordable housing, and advanced strategic planning in racial equity and community engagement.
Bloomington Parks and Recreation is hosting its second annual Winter Fest, featuring Blades and Bites events for outdoor skating, food and games. The first event is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 17, at Running Park from 5 to 9 p.m., followed by a second event Saturday, Jan. 25, at Westwood Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both events are free to attend and will include free skate rentals, prizes and food trucks.
The city also announced changes to its Bloomington Briefing newsletter format, featuring a new full-image cover design. The January issue showcases 9M Creek, with plans to feature different natural areas and city amenities each month. Residents can submit photography for cover consideration through the city's website.
