The city of Bloomington honored approximately 1,000 volunteers during April recognition events, including a mayoral proclamation and annual appreciation dinner.

Mayor Busy proclaimed April 20-26 as Volunteer Recognition Week, followed by the city's annual volunteer appreciation event on April 29. The celebration featured dinner, live music and small gifts for attendees at Civic Plaza.

Bloomington's volunteers serve in various capacities throughout the city, including boards and commissions, sustainability efforts and arts support programs. The volunteers represent diverse backgrounds and abilities, contributing to multiple community initiatives.

The city also recognized National Therapy Animal Day on April 30, highlighting Pet Partners therapy animal teams that visit hospitals, nursing homes, schools and hospice facilities. The proclamation noted these teams make millions of visits annually, serving veterans, seniors, patients and students facing literacy challenges.

Commuter Services is promoting National Bike Month throughout May, encouraging residents to consider biking as a sustainable transportation option. The department invites community participation in National Bike to Work Day on May 16 and offers a bike month pledge through online platforms.
