The Charter Commission approved amendments to two sections of the city charter during its annual organizational meeting May 1, focusing on clerical updates and a title change for a key city position.

The commission unanimously approved changes to Chapter 5 of the charter, which governs petition processes for initiatives, referendums and recalls. The amendments standardize petition form titles and add requirements for email addresses and telephone numbers to improve communication between petitioners and the city clerk during the validation process.

Commission members also approved an amendment to Chapter 6 changing the title "Assistant City Manager" to "Deputy City Manager" to align with current professional standards in municipal government. City Attorney Melissa noted the title change reflects marketplace terminology and will be coordinated with updates to the city's financial management policies and compensation plan.

The commission re-elected its current leadership during the organizational portion of the meeting. Chair Peterson was reappointed to lead the commission, with Emily Melby continuing as vice chair. Adrian was reappointed as recording secretary, and Attorney Melissa will continue representing the commission.

The charter amendments now advance to the City Council, which must hold public hearings and vote unanimously to approve the changes. Public hearings are scheduled for June 2, with a final council vote required by June 30. If approved and no referendum petition is filed, the amendments will take effect within 90 days.
