The Bloomington School Board of Independent School District 271 took a significant step in its long-term facilities planning during its May 26th meeting, endorsing plans for the demolition of both Southwood Center and Bloomington Stadium. This decision paves the way for the sale of these properties, with officials aiming to secure optimal financial returns for the district.

The vote to approve the demolition and subsequent sale of these key district properties underscores a strategic move to address aging infrastructure and optimize the district’s real estate assets. Board Chair Tom Bennett articulated the rationale behind the decision, emphasizing the importance of this approach for future financial stability.

The approved plan will see the sites cleared, presenting unencumbered parcels to potential buyers. This strategy is intended to attract a wider range of developers and maximize the sale price, ultimately benefiting ISD 271’s capacity to invest in current school buildings like Kennedy High School and Jefferson High School, or future projects.

In addition to the facilities planning, the board addressed several other crucial items during the May 26th meeting. Among these was the approval of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the 'I Love U Guys' Foundation for the adoption of their Standard Response Protocol. This initiative aims to standardize emergency response procedures across all district schools.

Superintendent Eric Melbye highlighted the importance of this new protocol, emphasizing its role in enhancing safety and communication during critical incidents. The board also approved the 2025-27 contract with the Federation of Paraprofessionals, ensuring continued stability in labor relations.
