Brooklyn Center City Council Establishes New Economic Development Authority
The unanimous decision paves the way for broader economic tools and strategies aimed at fostering growth and job creation in the community.
The Brooklyn Center City Council unanimously approved Resolution 2626043 and the first reading of Ordinance 819 on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026, officially establishing an Economic Development Authority (EDA) for the City of Golden Valley. This significant move marks a strategic shift to expand the city's capabilities in fostering economic growth, job creation, and diverse development projects beyond the scope of its previous Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA). The decision came after a public hearing and extensive discussion among council members and community representatives, with the roll call vote showing 4 ayes and 0 nays.
Ms. Costello, the Housing and Economic Development Manager, presented the staff report, outlining the critical advantages of transitioning to an EDA. She highlighted that the new authority would provide a more robust framework for promoting integrated development, where job creation and housing go hand-in-hand.
As part of this city’s strategic planning process, transitioning to an EDA would align with the city’s development tools, all under one body, that will provide broader statutory that will encompass HRA powers. With a job, you need housing. We want people to be able to live and work here in Golden Valley.
One of the most significant capabilities an EDA will introduce is the ability for the city to actively market itself for job creation, a function previously limited under an HRA. This expansion will allow Golden Valley to attract new businesses and foster a more dynamic economic environment.
