[0:05] Um, it's a great night of music making [0:07] tonight because we will see uh the [0:11] progression of band from 8th grade, from [0:13] middle school uh through our top high [0:16] school band. Um, and that's not [0:18] something you get to see or experience [0:20] at every concert. And it's really [0:22] special um when you do because a lot [0:25] changes um when you go between 8th grade [0:27] and 9th grade. And I'll say this again [0:30] to my eighth grade parents out there uh [0:34] is I implore you um to not let your [0:37] student uh drop ban between 8th grade [0:39] and 9th grade. So many things change [0:41] whether you're going to Armstrong or [0:42] whether you're going to Cooper. And um I [0:45] know that's a dropping off point. So [0:47] please please please help us encourage [0:49] these young people to to continue to [0:51] make music. But and without further ado, [0:56] I do want to introduce our both of our [0:58] eighth grade directors. Um, somehow they [1:01] got a teaching position despite being in [1:03] eighth grade. [1:06] I tried. [1:08] Uh, [1:11] it was there. Um, so I want to introduce [1:13] our eighth grade directors. Uh, the one [1:15] you'll see a little later tonight [1:17] conducting our combined tune is Mr. [1:20] Beli. uh he's a director at fair [1:29] and I would like to officially welcome [1:32] Miss Nammen to the stage the director at [1:34] Robbinsdale Middle School to conduct our [1:36] eighth graders on Afterburn. And I know because um that [6:12] there are folks in the audience and in [6:14] um the bands that will be attending [6:16] Armstrong 2. Uh so I want you to know [6:18] that their structure, their class [6:19] structure is the same as ours. Okay? So [6:22] we have they have a freshman band, a [6:24] concert band, and their top band is [6:26] called the symphonic band, which is the [6:27] same as our wind ensemble. Um the [6:29] freshman that a band that we have on [6:31] stage, uh this is a band that almost all [6:34] freshmen find themselves in. Uh big [6:36] change between 8th grade and 9th grade [6:38] is that we start meeting band um in your [6:40] band class every day. Uh and at Cooper [6:43] what we do is we structure the class. [6:45] About half of the class is spent on [6:47] pedigogy and skills and then the second [6:49] half of the class is kind of spent on um [6:51] your concert repertoire. Uh with that [6:53] being said, we have three uh really good [6:55] pieces for us that has help that have [6:57] helped our band grow over the um this [7:00] semester. On guard by Katie O'Hara Lee. [16:35] Uh it was a great a really great [16:37] experience for um our students uh to [16:40] really see the learning process all the [16:42] way through and Lynn's growth with us [16:44] was truly tremendous. Um the concert [16:47] band is the middle band that we have uh [16:51] just like at Armstrong and it's made up [16:53] of grades 10 through 12. It is a non [16:56] auditioned band. Um and the tunes that [16:59] we have here at Cooper for our concert [17:01] band, we have a wonderful um [17:04] composition, three Brazilian folk songs [17:06] based on works by Horta Lobos, one of [17:09] the most famous Brazilian composers out [17:11] there. Um when we have a piece that's [17:14] multiovements, think of it kind of like [17:16] a chapter book, uh the music really [17:18] isn't over until we've played all of the [17:20] movements. Um, and after that we have a [17:23] wonderful ballad, as Summer was just [17:25] beginning, an epitap for James Dean, if [17:28] you're one of the people who remembers [17:29] who that was. They're hungry for materials [53:50] and I have full confidence that in with [53:53] what's going on with our district that [53:54] our school is trying hard enough uh or [53:57] as hard as they can. However, um as you [54:01] know at the grocery store, money is not [54:02] going as far as it used to. So, if you [54:06] um feel inclined to support uh what we [54:09] have going on here and the programs we [54:10] have going on here in band at Cooper, we [54:13] have donation boxes in the back and any [54:15] and all help is appreciated. [54:18] Um, second of all, [54:20] uh, after the concert, it says here at [54:23] the bottom, um, our top jazz band is [54:25] playing in the foyer. Um, they're going [54:27] to be playing three, uh, jazz, I guess [54:30] you could call them standards, followed [54:32] by two, holiday tunes. Um, so enjoy [54:36] those while we serve nine gallons of ice [54:40] cream and root beer floats. Yeah, nine [54:43] gallons. [54:48] Yeah, [54:51] >> I said that around eighth graders. My [54:53] mistake. [54:55] >> Now, [54:57] um folks, [55:00] there um are a lot of things, as I've [55:04] mentioned, there are a lot of things in [55:06] the news about what's going on with our [55:07] district and what's going on at the [55:09] school board meetings and all the cuts [55:10] we have to make. And what I cannot [55:15] emphasize enough is I do not want you to [55:17] forget what is going on in this [55:20] auditorium tonight and all of the good [55:22] things and good learning and good [55:24] experiences that our students are having [55:26] in this district. [55:38] It is not all doom and gloom. I can [55:41] speak for Cooper because I teach here. [55:43] We have some of the most compassionate [55:44] teachers that are willing to go above [55:46] and beyond that you will find anywhere. [55:49] Um, and please do not let what's going [55:51] on in the media cloud your opinion of [55:54] our district because our students are [55:56] still phenomenal. They're still learning [55:58] a lot and they're still making great [56:00] music. [56:10] So, we are going to have the adventure [56:13] of combining all of the musicians in [56:15] this auditorium.
