Community Group Voices Alarm Over ICE Presence Near School Campuses
The Brooklyn Park School Board heard concerns from a community group regarding federal agents allegedly harassing school observers and lingering near school property, despite claims of safety.
The safety of students and staff within Brooklyn Park schools was brought into sharp focus at the February 24th, 2026 School Board Regular Meeting, as a community representative raised significant concerns regarding the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents near school grounds. The allegations included agents harassing school observers and maintaining a visible presence near school property, prompting calls for enhanced protection for educational environments.
The threat is still here, and our schools deserve to be protected.
Deb Peterson, an Administrator with the School Observer Group, delivered a passionate public comment to the board, highlighting the persistent anxieties felt by members of the community. Her statement underscored a perceived ongoing threat, which she articulated necessitates stronger protective measures for local schools. The concerns articulated by Peterson directly contradict any prior assurances of safety, suggesting that the issue remains unresolved and continues to impact community members connected to the schools.
The alleged actions of ICE agents – specifically the harassment of individuals observing school activities and their lingering presence in proximity to school buildings – have created an atmosphere of apprehension. These reports suggest a pattern of conduct that, according to the School Observer Group, undermines the sense of security crucial for a positive learning environment and for community members engaging with their local schools. This issue is particularly sensitive given the diverse demographics served by the Brooklyn Park school district.
Board Chair Tanya Prince acknowledged the gravity of the feedback received during the public comment period. She affirmed the board's commitment to processing the concerns raised by the community and integrating them into ongoing district work. This response indicates that the school board and district leadership are taking the allegations seriously and are prepared to consider how to address the community's experiences.
