American Indian Parent Advisory Committee Advocates for Standalone Education Department
The committee presented a resolution to the School Board, emphasizing the growing size and statutory requirements of American Indian education programs.
The American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (APAC) called for the establishment of a standalone department for American Indian Education, citing the program's expanding size and specific statutory requirements. The significant request was formally presented during the Brooklyn Park City Council School Board's regular meeting on February 24, 2026, as part of the annual Resolution of Concurrence. The proposal aims to provide dedicated oversight and resources commensurate with the program's critical role.
Ethan Neardell, Coordinator of Indian Education, presented the resolution to the school board, highlighting the necessity for a dedicated departmental structure. This move, according to the committee, is crucial for effectively managing and supporting the educational needs of American Indian students, particularly in compliance with Minnesota Statute 124D78, which governs American Indian education programs, including those at AIO Schools.
Beyond administrative structure, the APAC also raised concerns regarding disproportionate discipline data affecting American Indian students. The committee advocated for a greater emphasis on restorative approaches to address these disparities, underscoring that a dedicated department could better champion and implement such initiatives across the district’s schools, including Maple Grove Middle School and Park Center Senior High.
Thank you so much. Um yeah, we um it was really um a a significant opportunity for us to directly hear um all of your feedback and your experiences and um the district leaders and the school board are taking that and incorporating it into the continued that work that we do.
