Student Initiative Prompts Review of PSEO Grade Weighting Policy
Independent School District 279 is set to consider a formal request to revise Policy 626, aiming for equitable GPA recognition for PSEO courses alongside Advanced Placement programs.
The Independent School District 279 School Board was formally asked to review Policy 626 concerning the weighting of Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) course grades, following a request from a student advocating for equitable academic recognition. McKenzie Lux, a rising senior at Maple Grove Senior High, addressed the board during its regular meeting on June 23, 2026, urging for PSEO course grades to be weighted on the same scale as Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
Lux's appeal highlighted concerns about fairness, academic rigor, equity, and alignment with state law, emphasizing the importance of providing consistent recognition for all college-level coursework. The current disparity in grade weighting can significantly impact students' Grade Point Averages (GPAs), which are crucial for college admissions and scholarship opportunities.
PSEO course grades will be weighted on the same scale as advanced placement courses. Respectfully submitted by ISD 279 students and families requesting equitable recognition of all college level coursework.
The request for policy review now puts Policy 626 under formal consideration by the School Board. The board, responsible for the oversight and administration of district policies, routinely evaluates various aspects of school operations to ensure they serve the best interests of students and the community.
