Student Advocates for Equitable PSEO Grade Weighting at School Board Meeting
A rising senior from Maple Grove High School requested a review of Policy 626, urging the Independent School District 279 School Board to align PSEO course grade weighting with Advanced Placement courses for fairness and academic recognition.
The Independent School District 279 School Board heard a compelling request this week to review and revise Policy 626 concerning the weighting of Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) course grades. McKenzie Lux, a rising senior from Maple Grove Senior High, addressed the board during its regular meeting on June 23rd, 2026, advocating for PSEO courses to receive the same grade weighting as Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
Lux highlighted the academic rigor of PSEO coursework, asserting that it should be recognized similarly to other college-level courses offered within the district. Her request cited principles of fairness, equity, and alignment with state law, which mandates that PSEO courses be treated comparably to advanced courses. The proposed change aims to ensure that students who challenge themselves with college curriculum through PSEO are not at a disadvantage when it comes to their academic record.
PSEO course grades will be weighted on the same scale as advanced placement courses. Respectfully submitted by ISD 279 students and families requesting equitable recognition of all college level coursework.
The student-initiated request was formally presented to the School Board, signaling the beginning of a potential policy review process. This discussion comes at a time when districts across the state are continuously evaluating how best to support and incentivize academic achievement among their diverse student populations.
