Brooklyn Park Council reviews school safety lockdown procedures
The Brooklyn Park City Council discussed safety protocols for Robbinsdale Area Schools on Monday, focusing on how the district responds when threats or hazards occur outside school buildings. The review outlined specific procedures staff and students must follow during these security events.
During the meeting, council members examined what the district calls a "secure" procedure — a response protocol activated when a threat or hazard is detected outside a school building. When a secure event is declared, all students and staff must move indoors immediately.
Under the secure procedure, exterior doors are locked to prevent anyone from entering or leaving the building. Despite the lockdown, normal indoor activities continue, including class changes and regular instruction. This distinguishes a secure event from a full lockdown, which typically halts all movement and activities.
Staff members are assigned a critical responsibility during these events: taking attendance to account for all students and employees. This ensures administrators know everyone's location and status while the secure procedure remains in effect.
The secure event continues until school officials determine the outside threat has been resolved and issue an all-clear signal to resume normal operations. The council's review of these procedures reflects ongoing efforts by local government and school districts to maintain safe learning environments while preparing staff and students for potential emergencies.
