The Independent School District 279 School Board approved construction bids for major renovations at Osseo Senior High School during its March 18 meeting, moving forward with a project that will modernize facilities and expand career and technical education programs.

The renovation project, presented by Executive Director of Finance and Operations John Morad, includes a new addition, expanded cafeteria space, updated media center, and comprehensive improvements to athletic facilities. The project will begin this summer and continue through summer 2026, with completion scheduled for the fall 2026 school year. Morad noted the project is currently under budget.

The meeting drew significant public comment on two primary issues. Multiple speakers addressed concerns about reductions in elementary school counselor and social worker positions, with Dr. Margaret Ortman questioning why mental health staffing cuts were occurring despite the recent passage of a $223 million referendum that promised mental health support.

Several community members also spoke against the district's LGBTQIA+ advisory lesson, requesting its removal from curriculum. Speakers cited concerns about the lesson conflicting with family values and religious beliefs, while others argued the content was inappropriate for elementary students.

Educational Support Professionals (ESPs) also addressed the board regarding wage concerns, with multiple speakers describing challenges with current compensation levels. Tracy Doran, an ESP at Oakview Elementary, highlighted pay disparities within job classifications, noting she receives $2.50 less per hour for duties labeled as clerical despite performing instructional work.
