Sonnesyn Elementary School has implemented a comprehensive "Words Matter" initiative designed to teach students, staff and families about the power of language and its impact on relationships and community building.

The schoolwide program addresses patterns of unkind language observed among students by focusing on teaching positive communication habits rather than using punitive measures, according to Principal Adams. The initiative operates through monthly themes, daily announcements, classroom lessons and family involvement to create a culture of kindness, respect and inclusion.

The program features monthly themes throughout the school year, including September's focus on the power of words, October's emphasis on kindness and action, and November's concentration on gratitude and compliments. Students participate in daily announcements, classroom lessons with read-alouds and role-playing, and community building circles that incorporate restorative practices.

A student leadership component called the Kindness Team generated significant interest, with 60 fourth and fifth-grade students applying for positions - representing 73% of eligible students. Social Worker Kelly Betszel noted that applicants shared personal stories about kindness and expressed desires to improve their own behavior. Additional leadership opportunities are being developed with climate and culture specialists to accommodate the high level of student interest.

The initiative extends to families through weekly newsletter content, family pledges distributed at school events, and encouragement for parents to discuss language use at home. The program culminated in a student-performed song created by music teacher Mrs. Lutz, featuring second, fourth and fifth-grade volunteers who sang about choosing kindness.
