The Robbinsdale Area Schools Board voted Monday to accelerate its timeline for school closure decisions as the district faces an $8-9 million budget shortfall requiring a statutory operating debt plan.

The board approved moving final facility recommendations to November 17, with a public hearing scheduled for December 15. Administration recommended closing Robbinsdale Middle School, Sonos Elementary, and the Educational Services Center, while repurposing Lake View Elementary to house district offices and specialized programs.

The proposed consolidations would save approximately $2.5 million in the first year, representing only a fraction of the cuts needed to balance the budget. Chief Financial Officer Kristen Hoheisel outlined additional reduction options including eliminating International Baccalaureate programs, reducing transportation services, and implementing six-period school days at middle and high school levels.

A community survey conducted by Morris Leatherman Company showed mixed support for district operations, with 75% rating education quality as good or excellent but concerns about spending efficiency. The survey found 51% of residents believe the district has a strong reputation, though only 36% were familiar with the Vision 2030 planning process.

The district must submit its statutory operating debt plan to the Minnesota Department of Education by January 31, 2026. Superintendent Dr. Aldo Sicoli emphasized the complexity of the decisions ahead while expressing confidence in the district's ability to navigate the challenges and create better opportunities for students.
