The Osseo Area Schools Board held a work session Monday at Brooklyn Middle School, focusing on instructional improvements and student engagement initiatives.

Brooklyn Middle School Principal Kim Monet presented the school's implementation of teacher clarity practices based on John Hattie's visible learning research. The approach emphasizes explicit learning intentions and success criteria to help students become active learners. Monet said the strategy has an effect size of 0.85, meaning students could grow more than one academic year during each school year.

The district is also developing a revised student stakeholder survey with input from student board representatives. The survey will focus on safety, belonging, inclusion, student agency, and future readiness. Student representatives will help design questions for different grade levels, from elementary through high school.

The Finding Human Institute will conduct listening sessions with students in grades 4-12 using a World Cafe format. These sessions are scheduled to begin in November, with survey administration planned for February or March 2026.

The board also received a cybersecurity update from technology staff. The district's security partner Red Canary analyzed over 10 billion data points this year and investigated 461 incidents, identifying 68 credible threats. All threats were successfully contained without impact to district operations, according to Director of Information Systems Gerald Edwards.
