The AIO Area Schools Board reviewed comprehensive plans for the Crest View facility rebuild project during a work session September 9, featuring a complete reconstruction rather than the originally planned repurpose.

The project has evolved significantly from initial concepts, according to Executive Director of Finance and Operations John Morset, who presented alongside architects from Wold Architects and Engineers. The new facility will serve as a community-focused educational center featuring pre-K programs, an American Indian Education center, family engagement spaces, and professional development facilities.

The building design incorporates multiple security zones to accommodate both educational programming and community use. The pre-K component will maintain secure entrance protocols similar to traditional elementary schools, while community spaces can operate with flexible access depending on activities and security needs.

Construction timeline calls for public bidding to begin in January 2026, with anticipated occupancy in fall 2027. The existing building will be demolished beginning in October to make way for the new construction.

Board members raised questions about security protocols for the mixed-use facility, particularly regarding staff safety and playground security. The architects confirmed multiple lockdown capabilities and enhanced glass features throughout the building to provide flexible security options based on daily activities and community events.
