Corcoran Charter Commission Reaffirms Leadership, Tackles Staffing Ahead of 2027 Planning
The Corcoran Charter Commission addressed key reappointments and a standing commissioner shortage during its September 15 meeting, outlining future plans.
The Corcoran Charter Commission convened on September 15, 2026, to address critical organizational matters, including the reappointments of two long-standing commissioners and an ongoing shortage in its ranks. The meeting, held at 6:30 PM in the Council Chambers, saw commissioners tackle a range of new business items aimed at maintaining the body's functional integrity and preparing for the upcoming year.
A central item on the agenda involved the reappointments of George Gmach and Brian Lother, both current members of the Charter Commission. Commissioners approved their re-entry for new terms slated to conclude in October 2030, ensuring continuity in leadership. Brian Lother currently serves as the Commission Chair.
Ensuring stability and institutional knowledge is crucial for the Charter Commission, especially as we continue to address important community governance matters.
The reappointments come as the Commission continues to operate with fewer members than its authorized capacity. Currently, only five of the seven available seats on the body are filled. This configuration follows the amendment of the City Charter through Ordinance 2025-557, which reduced the total number of commission seats from ten to seven. The current staffing level indicates two open positions remain.
My commitment to serving the residents of Corcoran through the Charter Commission remains strong, and I look forward to continuing this vital work.
Comprehensive New Business Agenda
Beyond the reappointments, the Commission's new business segment covered several essential administrative and procedural tasks. These included the approval of past meeting minutes, discussions regarding new commission nominations to potentially fill vacant seats, and responses concerning the petition process. A crucial annual responsibility, the reporting to the Fourth Judicial District Court, which is received by Chief Judge Kerry W. Meyer, was also on the agenda. Additionally, the commissioners focused on forward planning by setting the date for their 2027 meeting schedule.
