Minnetonka Foundation Amplifies Classroom Innovation with Teacher Grant Program
The Minnetonka Public Schools Foundation’s dedicated grant program continues to fund unique educational opportunities, recently culminating in a $100,000 investment for district-wide literacy tools.
Minnetonka, MN – The Minnetonka Public Schools Foundation continues to play a pivotal role in enriching student learning experiences through its robust Teacher Grant Program. This initiative provides crucial funding for projects and resources that extend beyond the district's standard operational budget, fostering innovation directly within classrooms across Minnetonka Schools District.
The program, largely supported by fundraising efforts such as the annual Dream Makers event, focuses on delivering enhancements that directly benefit students. Trun Dows, Board Chair of the Minnetonka Public Schools Foundation, highlighted the core mission of the grants.
Most of the money we raise through this event goes back to the school district through our teacher grant program. These are things that teachers can't get out of their normal budget, so this is just enhancements that they're bringing into their classroom which just benefits all of the students that get to go through that classroom.
Past grants have funded a diverse array of projects designed to engage students in unique ways. From hands-on science explorations to fostering environmental awareness, these initiatives empower educators to bring creative ideas to life. Dows provided specific examples of previously funded endeavors.
A couple years ago we had an individual and we funded an aquarium so that he could teach his class what underwater Lake Minnetonka habitat looked like what a cool unique experience to have. We've had vertical gardens in a lot of the classrooms throughout the district so that kids can learn how these plants grow even in our harsh Minnesota winters indoors throughout the school year.
From Classroom Idea to District-Wide Impact
The impact of the Teacher Grant Program extends beyond individual classrooms, often serving as a catalyst for district-wide improvements. Superintendent David Law emphasized how these grants enable experimentation and discovery of highly effective educational tools.
As a district we try to provide as much as we can but this really opens the door for some innovation and sometimes this innovation is something that we say, 'Wow, this is impactful, it should happen across our district.'
A significant recent example of this scalability is the district's implementation of decodable readers. This initiative, now reaching all kindergarten through second-grade students in Minnetonka's six elementary schools, originated from individual teacher grant requests over several years.
Superintendent Law detailed the progression of this project, which saw teachers repeatedly seeking grants for these specialized books designed to build foundational phonics skills. Recognizing the widespread need and success in individual classrooms, the district collaborated with the Foundation to scale the effort.
This opportunity actually came to us through some teacher grants for the past three years. We saw some individual teachers ask for grant money for these decodable readers in their individual classrooms. After seeing that repeated process so many times, we kind of thought to ourselves, 'This is a great opportunity to maybe impact the whole district.' Last year we were able to grant a $100,000 Grant to buy most of these decodable readers.
The $100,000 grant facilitated the swift acquisition and distribution of these readers, ensuring that all English and Spanish-speaking students in the target grades now have access to this vital literacy resource. Feedback from teachers regarding the decodable readers has been overwhelmingly positive, solidifying the program's success.
The Foundation’s commitment to supporting educators and students underscores the power of community partnership in fostering an environment of excellence and opportunity within the Minnetonka Public Schools.
