Minnetonka Schools approves $4 million in building projects
The Minnetonka Public Schools board unanimously approved the sale of nearly $4 million in bonds on August 7 to fund a new parking lot at the high school and an additional student drop-off driveway at an elementary school. The district also approved new curriculum materials and sold surplus technology equipment to fund future upgrades.
The school board greenlit two major capital projects through the sale of Certificates of Participation bonds—a financing tool that allows districts to fund improvements without traditional debt. The first bond sale, totaling $1.99 million, will fund a parking lot addition at Minnetonka High School. These bonds sold on July 8 at a favorable 4.79% interest rate. The second bond sale of $1.995 million will pay for a second student drop-off and pickup driveway at Scenic Heights Elementary School, sold on July 27 at a 5.04% interest rate. According to Paul Bourgeois, who presented the bond sales, both rates were competitive given current market conditions. Preliminary work on both projects, including hazardous material testing and soil analysis, is already underway.
In curriculum matters, the board unanimously approved new and updated educational resources for the 2026-27 school year. Director of Academic Programs Elida Kaine presented revised social studies materials for grades 6-12, updated Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate resources, and Adilante, a new Spanish immersion language arts program for kindergarten through fifth grade. Kaine noted that Adilante is "grounded in structured literacy and the science of reading" and aligns with the district's parallel English program. One parent reviewed the new Spanish program but offered no comments.
The board also approved the sale of surplus technology equipment to Tech Reboot for $276,940. The district sold 2,180 iPads and 55 MacBooks as part of its three-year technology refresh cycle. The proceeds will be reinvested into the capital projects fund for future technology purchases. All votes passed unanimously with no dissent.
