In the heart of Eden Prairie, the Smith House has stood as a silent witness to the city's growth and evolution for nearly 150 years. Here, the past and present converge. Built in 1877, this once quaint family home has found a new life as a coffee shop. More importantly, it has transformed into a place for the community to gather and celebrate. But how did this historic home transform into a hub for its modern community? And what stories lie within its walls? In 1856, Sheldon and Mary Smith packed their things and moved from New York to Eden Prairie, settling down in a cabin near Duck Lake. In 1877, the family built a red brick 5-bedroom home known as the Smith Farm. Located on the railroad and in the center of downtown, it quickly became the city's hub for business and social gatherings. This role continued throughout the 20th century, even as the city modernized. The house passed through the Smith Douglas Moore family until 1981 when the house was sold to the city of Eden Prairie. The Smith Coffee House is an iconic landmark in the Eden Prairie community and it stands as a testament to the importance of historical preservation. Over the years, they have made an effort to preserve the history left behind from past generations. The Smith Coffee House was awarded the American Institute of Architects Merit Award. This award acknowledges their dedication to integrating history into the coffee house. Additionally, it was awarded the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota Honor Award. This shows the true impact they have had on the broader Minnesota community. The Smith House is about making a space that respects the past, but at the same time embraces the present. With the Smith House, preserving this iconic history, it is a key part of the Eden Prairie community where past and present can come together and share a cup of coffee. Since 2006, the Smith Douglas Moore House has been more commonly known as the Smith Coffee House among Eden Prairie residents. The thriving coffee shop is now home to customers looking for a cozy place to have a morning treat or to stop in for brunch. Even though the old train station and travelers are gone, the spirit of the people coming and going for Smith Coffee House isn't. An ever growing community is fostered throughout the shop through events such as pizza night, bringing people together from all parts of Eden Prairie. As a pillar of our modern community as well as an important part of our community's past, the Smith Douglas Moore House has certainly had a lasting legacy. The house has stood strong for over a century and it continues to be an essential element of Eden Prairie. It has lived many lives, yet it's endured and adapted alongside our city while still incorporating elements of its heritage. Its presence stands as a reminder for all of us to consider how our city has grown and developed and as a call for us to not forget its roots.
