Edina Planning Commission Approves Setback Variance for Marylane Home

Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Ordinance Update

Planning Commission Work Plan and Committee Assignments

Votes (1)

Front Yard Setback Variance for 4603 Marylane

Approved Unanimously

Dissent: None.

Moved by Commissioner Smith [22:15] · Seconded by Unknown [22:18]

Planner Auer explained that the property owners wish to add garage and living space. Because a neighbor to the east has a 200-foot setback, the calculated 'average' setback for the block is 116.4 feet, which is much deeper than the proposed 56.3 feet. Commissioners agreed the current ordinance logic fails on non-standard, large-acreage lots.

Notable Quotes (2)

The property is relatively unique in that is on a block with one home having that extreme front yard setback as compared to the other homes... we couldn't just average the ones that are to the West.

this ordinance makes sense only in the context of you know a typical Suburban development with same siiz lots... when you've got lots like this that are so widely different in size... the whole logic falls apart.
