No action required ## Information/Background: ## 2026 Arts and Culture Workplan: ## Arts & Culture Commission The Commission strives to build a vibrant community through support of arts and culture and advises the City Council on artistic initiatives in Edina, including the Edina Art Center. ## Initiative 1.1.1: Art Center Colocation at Southdale Library The Arts and Culture Commission will continue to bring forward community perspective for the new Art Center, collocated at the Hennepin County Southdale Library. 2026 Initiative members: Piacek-Llanes, Scully, Steinberg, Westlund, Buzar Barua (s), Peterson (s) ## Initiative 1.1.2: Edina Art Grant Program Arts and Culture Commission members will review, refine and host a third year of the Edina Art Grant Program. ## 2026 Initiative members: Curtin, Fram, Pandya, Piacek-Llanes, Peterson (s) Initiative 1.1.3 Review Public Art Opportunities for New City Facilities and Locations The Arts and Culture Commission will review public art elements and make recommendations to public projects, such as Fire Station #2, Fred Richards Park, Braemar Arena and others. 2026 Initiative members: all ## Initiative 1.1.4: Commission Participation in Community Events Commission participation in up to two community events this upcoming year. ## 2026 Initiative members: Byrd, Scully, Steinberg, Zbaren ## Initiative 1.1.5: Utility Box Art Wrap Program Three of the five boxes were wrapped in 2025. No Action required ## Information/Background: The Council/Commission joint work session with Arts & Culture, Community Health and Parks and Recreation Commission will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room at City Hall. City Council forms boards and commissions to foster resident engagement, offering meaningful ways for community members to serve, provide insight on key topics, and participate in impactful initiatives. Historically, commissions developed work plans annually; however, as of December 2024, a new two- year work plan cycle was introduced. In June of 2025, Council met with Planning, Heritage Preservation, Energy & Environment and Transportation commissions to discuss the development of a two-year work plan. ## Purpose of the Work Session This session serves as a foundational step in the two-year work plan process. It’s designed to bring Council and commissions together to synchronize priorities, exchange feedback, and clarify direction before commissions begin crafting their formal work plans for 2027–2028. Instead of formal presentations, the focus will be on forward-thinking dialogue to better understand City Council’s vision for each commission’s work plan. ## Expectations for Commission Members Commissioners are encouraged to share key themes or areas of interest for consideration in the upcoming work plan. They should actively ask questions to gain guidance regarding scope, priorities, or direction and be attentive to Council’s feedback, noting priorities and concerns. ## Expectations for City Council Council members will listen to commission ideas with strategic alignment and city values in mind. They will provide direction on which projects or topics should be included, identify where commissions can add the most value to Council’s goals, and outline any constraints that may shape the work plan. Council members are also expected to ask clarifying questions to help guide the commissions’ focus and ensure mutual understanding. ## Framing the Two-Year Work Plan As the commission prepares, remember that each commission’s two-year work plan should include four to five key initiatives that either advance City Council priorities or fulfill mandates defined in city Page 8 of 11 code or statute (such as reviewing land use applications). Plans should follow a phased approach: - Year 1: Study or research - Year 2: Recommendations or implementation, as directed by Council Work plans should align with the city’s strategic priorities—Strong Foundation, Reliable Service, Livable City, Better Together—as well as the budget values of sustainability, stewardship, engagement, equity, and health. It’s essential to be realistic about commissioner capacity and the resources required. ## Next Steps - After the Work Session Following the work session, each commission will finalize its proposed work plan in the coming months. These plans are to be submitted to Administration by September 2026. Commission's will present their proposed work plans to City Council on October 6.
